Image Converter

Drop in a picture in almost any format, including iPhone HEIC, web WebP and AVIF, camera RAW, Photoshop PSD or SVG, and pick what it should become. JPG is preselected because it is the format nearly every app, printer and upload form accepts.

Answer

What does the image converter do?

It re-encodes an image into another format, for example HEIC to JPG or PNG to WebP, without changing what the picture shows. You choose from 14 target formats, and up to 20 files convert in one go.

Convert to JPG, PNG or WebP: what changes and what stays

A format is a container plus a compression method. Converting keeps the pixels and swaps both: a 4032 × 3024 HEIC photo becomes a 4032 × 3024 JPG, and only the way those pixels are stored on disk is different. That is why converting never adds detail. Turning a small, blurry JPG into PNG gives you a larger file of the same blurry picture.

What can change is everything around the pixels. Lossy targets (JPG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, JPEG XL) throw away information the eye barely notices, controlled by the Quality slider; 85 is the default and is visually identical to the source for photos. Lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP, TGA) keep every pixel and produce bigger files. Transparency survives only if the target supports it, and animation only in GIF and WebP.

Most people arrive with one of a handful of jobs. iPhone photos that a Windows PC or upload form refuses go through HEIC to JPG. Pictures saved from a website as .webp go through WebP to JPG. Screenshots that are too heavy for email go through PNG to JPG, and graphics that need a clean transparent edge go the other way with JPG to PNG. Each of those pages is this converter with the right target already set.

Image formats the converter reads

  • .JPG
  • .JPEG
  • .JFIF
  • .PNG
  • .WEBP
  • .AVIF
  • .HEIC
  • .HEIF
  • .GIF
  • .BMP
  • .TIFF
  • .SVG
  • .ICO
  • .ICNS
  • .PSD
  • .EPS
  • .AI
  • .TGA
  • .DDS
  • .EXR
  • .HDR
  • .JP2
  • .JXL
  • .XCF
  • .EMF
  • .WMF
  • .CR2
  • .CR3
  • .NEF
  • .ARW
  • .DNG
  • +7

The list covers everyday formats, design files and camera RAW. Photoshop PSD and GIMP XCF are flattened into one image, so layers are merged as they appear. Illustrator AI and EPS files and SVG drawings are rendered to pixels at their own size. RAW files from Canon (CR2, CR3), Nikon (NEF), Sony (ARW), Fujifilm (RAF), Olympus (ORF), Pentax (PEF) and Panasonic (RW2), plus Adobe's DNG, are developed with neutral default settings, which is fine for a quick JPG but not a replacement for editing in a RAW developer.

Two inputs need a word of warning. An animated GIF or WebP converted to a still format keeps only the first frame unless you set Animated input to export every frame as separate files. A multi-page TIFF is treated the same way. If what you actually need is one document from several images, the image to PDF tool is the right place.

Settings worth knowing before you convert

  • Quality 85 is the default for JPG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and JPEG XL. Go to 90–95 for print, 70–80 for web pages.
  • Lossless (WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL) ignores the quality slider and keeps every pixel.
  • Transparent areas fills transparency with white, black or a custom hex color when the target is JPG, BMP or EPS.
  • Resize output image sets width, height, longest side or a percentage in the same pass.
  • Strip metadata is on by default and removes GPS position and camera data; Keep color profile stays on so colors do not shift.
  • Color space converts to sRGB for screens, keeps the original for print, or turns the image grayscale. DPI tag only writes a number into the file; it never changes the pixels.

When a converted image looks wrong

The photo is lying on its side after conversion

The camera stored the rotation in EXIF and the original app applied it silently. Keep Auto orient ticked; it writes the rotation into the pixels so every viewer shows the photo upright.

Colors look washed out or too saturated

Wide-gamut photos from recent phones and cameras use Display P3 or Adobe RGB. Leave Color space on sRGB for anything going on screen, or keep Keep color profile ticked if the file goes to a print workflow.

The WebP or AVIF file will not open on an older computer

Safari added WebP in version 14 (2020) and AVIF in version 16 (2022), and older apps still lack both. Convert to JPG or PNG for anything that leaves the web.

The PNG is several times larger than the JPG

That is expected for photos, because PNG is lossless. Use JPG or WebP for photographs and keep PNG for flat graphics, or shrink the PNG with color reduction in compress image.

The ICO file looks blurry at small sizes

Downscaling a detailed picture to 16 px loses most of it. Simplify the artwork first, or choose only the larger sizes under Icon sizes.

Image converter questions

What is the easiest way to convert any picture to JPG?

Upload it here and keep the preselected JPG target. The converter reads 38 input extensions, so you do not need to know what the source format is; a .heic from an iPhone, a .webp saved from a browser and a .png screenshot all come out as ordinary .jpg files at quality 85.

Is there a free way to convert to WebP without installing anything?

Yes. Pick WebP under Convert to and convert in the browser on any device. Leave Lossless off for photos, which keeps files small at quality 85, and turn it on for logos and screenshots where every pixel should stay exact. PNG to WebP is the same tool with WebP already chosen.

Which output format should I pick if I am not sure?

JPG for photos that have to open anywhere, PNG for screenshots, graphics and anything with a transparent background. WebP and AVIF make smaller files for websites but are still refused by some older software and upload forms. The JPG vs JPEG vs PNG guide goes through the trade-offs in detail.

Can I convert a JPEG to SVG with this converter?

No. SVG is a vector format, so a photo has to be traced into shapes rather than re-saved. Use the image to SVG converter, which turns JPG and PNG logos, icons and line art into editable paths.

Why did my transparent PNG get a white background?

JPG, BMP and EPS cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels must be filled with something. The converter uses white by default; change Transparent areas to black or a custom color, or pick PNG, WebP or AVIF as the target to keep the transparency.

Do converted images keep the original resolution?

Yes. Width and height stay exactly as they were unless you set Resize output image under Advanced settings. Only the encoding changes, plus metadata removal if Strip metadata stays ticked.

How do I make a favicon or app icon from a PNG?

Choose ICO for Windows and website favicons or ICNS for macOS apps. With Icon sizes on All, one file holds 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 px versions, which is what browsers and operating systems expect. Start from a square image of at least 256 × 256 px so the largest size stays sharp.
