JPEG to PNG Converter

Get a PNG out of any .jpeg file when an app store, sticker platform or uploader lists PNG as the only accepted type. The picture stays exactly as it is; only the container changes.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Select the .jpeg files

Drop them in or browse to them. Files ending in .jpeg, .jpg, .jpe or .jfif all work, up to 20 at a time and 95 MB each.

  2. 2

Resize if the platform names a size

Convert to is set to PNG. If the store asks for, say, 512 × 512 px, set it under Resize output image in Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Convert and upload

Press Convert to PNG and download the files or a ZIP. Then upload them where the .jpeg was refused; our copies are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

What changes when a .jpeg becomes a .png?

Only the container and the file size. The PNG stores every pixel of the decoded JPEG without new compression, so it looks the same and passes uploaders that accept PNG only, but it is usually three to ten times larger.

Convert JPEG to PNG for uploaders that accept PNG only

JPEG is named after the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the committee formed in 1986 whose standard was approved in 1992 as ISO/IEC 10918-1. It was designed for photographs, and it shows: the format discards fine detail the eye barely notices and has no way to store transparency. Platforms that build interfaces out of your images, such as icons, stickers and emoji, avoid it for exactly those reasons.

That is where a perfectly good .jpeg gets rejected. App stores want app icons as PNG, sticker marketplaces want PNG with clean edges, and several design and print-on-demand uploaders validate the file header for PNG before they look at anything else. The fix takes a few seconds. If you have files ending in .jpg rather than .jpeg, JPG to PNG covers the same conversion with an editing focus.

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

JPEG to PNG is usually forced by a store or sticker platform that validates for PNG only; the picture does not improve, it just arrives in the container the uploader accepts, while PNG to JPEG goes the other way to save space.

The .jpeg extension and why it trips up some uploaders

Before you upload the PNG

  • .jpeg, .jpg and .jpe hold identical JPEG data; only the spelling differs
  • Renaming a .jpeg to .png does not convert it; header checks still see JPEG
  • The PNG keeps every pixel but cannot restore detail the JPEG dropped
  • Resize first when the platform names exact pixel dimensions
  • Transparency must be created in an editor; conversion alone leaves the background opaque
  • Expect the file to grow, so check the platform's size cap

JPEG to PNG file size and when the growth matters

PNG compresses with Deflate, a lossless method that works best on flat colors and sharp edges. A camera photo has neither: every pixel differs slightly from its neighbors, so a 400 KB JPEG of a 2000 × 1500 photo typically turns into a PNG of 3 to 5 MB. Logos, screenshots and simple artwork grow far less, and occasionally shrink.

For icons and stickers the growth rarely matters, because the images are small to begin with. For photos it can push you over a limit. In that case resize to the dimensions the platform actually displays, or ask whether JPEG is really refused; many forms that say PNG also accept JPG when you read the full list. If the destination is a website rather than a store, JPEG to WebP gives a far smaller file.

JPEG to PNG questions

Why does an uploader refuse my .jpeg but accept .png?

Some platforms check the file type and allow PNG only, because they need lossless pixels or an alpha channel for icons and stickers. The image itself is fine; it simply has to arrive in the container the platform validates.

Can I rename .jpeg to .png instead of converting?

No. Renaming changes the label, not the data, and a validator that reads the file header still sees JPEG. Some apps then refuse it, others open it only by guessing. Converting writes real PNG data with a matching extension.

Why do Mac exports end in .jpeg instead of .jpg?

macOS treats .jpeg as the preferred extension for JPEG images, so Preview and many Mac apps save that spelling. Windows software has long favored .jpg. Both contain the same JPEG data, which this converter reads either way.

Will the PNG pass a 1 MB upload limit?

Not always, because a PNG of a photo is several times larger than the JPEG. Resize to the size the platform actually displays before converting; a 512 × 512 icon is usually comfortably under 1 MB, while a full camera photo is not.

Does a converted JPEG get transparent corners for a sticker?

No. The JPEG had no transparency, so the PNG is opaque, white corners included. Cut out the subject in an editor or with a background remover, then export that as PNG for sticker platforms.
