PSD to SVG Converter

Save a Photoshop design as an .svg file for tools that only accept SVG. The converter flattens the PSD and wraps the image in SVG, so read on to see when that is enough and when a logo needs tracing.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PSD

Choose one or more .psd files, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Press Convert to SVG

The visible design is flattened at its canvas size and embedded in an SVG document. There is no quality slider, because the bitmap inside is stored losslessly.

  3. 3

    Open the result

Drop the .svg into a browser, Figma or Inkscape. It will look like the PSD, and zooming far in will show pixels, which is expected.

PSD to SVG: what the converter actually writes

A PSD is a stack of layers: pixel layers from photos and brushes, adjustment layers that change the pixels below them, type layers, smart objects, and shape layers, which Photoshop has stored as vector paths since version 6.0 in 2000. Photoshop itself shipped in February 1990, and the PSD format still carries a flattened composite of the visible stack so other programs can show the design without understanding every layer type.

This converter uses that flattened design. It renders the visible layers into one image at the canvas size, then writes an SVG document whose only content is that image. The SVG has the right width, height and transparency, so it drops into a page or a layout like the original. What it does not have is a single editable shape: every edge, including the edges of shape layers, is pixels. Effects, masks and blend modes have no one-to-one SVG equivalent, so the rendered result is the honest output.

PSD

Adobe Photoshop Document

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG is an XML-based vector format standardised by the W3C in 2001. Instead of pixels it describes shapes, paths and text, so it stays sharp at any size and is usually tiny for logos and icons. It supports transparency, CSS styling, scripting and animation, and every browser renders it natively. SVG is unsuitable for photographs, and complex illustrations can become slow to render. Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and browsers can open and edit it.

People look for PSD to SVG when a web builder, a template platform or a cutting machine asks for SVG and the design only exists as a Photoshop file; what they get is the flattened artwork in an SVG container.

Shape layers, smart objects and pixels in a PSD

MythSaving as .svg makes any design scalable.

FactScalability comes from paths. An SVG holding a bitmap softens past its pixel size like a PNG.

MythA logo drawn with Photoshop shapes converts to vector automatically.

FactThis tool flattens first, so shapes arrive as pixels. Vector shapes have to be exported or traced.

MythSmart objects keep their linked vector content.

FactA placed Illustrator file is rendered at the size it appears on the canvas, then flattened with the rest.

Getting real vector paths from a Photoshop design

For a logo, an icon or lettering that has to stay sharp at any size, tracing is the step you want. Convert the PSD to a transparent PNG with PSD to PNG, then run it through the image to SVG converter, which follows the edges and writes real paths. Tracing suits flat colors and clean outlines; photographs turn into thousands of tiny shapes. Our walkthrough on converting PNG to SVG covers the settings that keep curves smooth.

If the original vector art exists in Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Figma, ask for that file before tracing a flattened copy.

PSD to SVG questions

Will my Photoshop shape layers become editable SVG paths?

Not with this converter. Shape layers are vectors inside Photoshop, but the PSD is flattened into one bitmap before it is written to SVG, so every layer, shapes included, arrives as pixels. To keep paths, export the shapes from a vector editor, or trace the result.

Why is my SVG about as large as a PNG of the same design?

Because the SVG mostly is a PNG. The bitmap is stored as encoded text inside the SVG, which adds roughly a third to its size. A real vector logo would be a few kilobytes.

Can I send this SVG to a Cricut or a laser cutter?

It will import, but there is nothing to cut. Cutting machines follow path outlines, and a wrapped bitmap has none, so Design Space and laser software see a flat picture. Trace the logo with the image to SVG converter to get cut lines.

Is text from a Photoshop type layer still text in the SVG?

No. Type layers are rendered with their fonts and flattened like everything else, so you cannot search, select or retype the words. Recreate editable text in an SVG editor with the same font.

When is an SVG wrapper around a bitmap actually useful?

When a system demands the .svg extension but only displays the file, as some theme builders and template platforms do. It also works as a placeholder until proper vector art exists.

Does a bigger PSD canvas give a sharper SVG?

Yes. The SVG keeps the canvas dimensions, so a 4000 px PSD stays crisp at larger display sizes than a 1000 px one. Past its native size, the embedded image softens like any bitmap.
