JXL to PNG Converter
PNG is the safe landing place for a JPEG XL file you still want to edit: it stores the decoded pixels exactly, keeps the alpha channel, and opens in every browser and image editor. Upload the .jxl files and download PNGs that lose nothing further.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add your .jxl images
Drag in up to 20 JPEG XL files, each up to 95 MB. Lossless and lossy .jxl files are both accepted.
- 2
Check the animation option if needed
PNG output has no quality slider. For an animated .jxl, Animated input under Advanced settings keeps the first frame or exports every frame as its own PNG.
- 3
Convert and download
Press Convert to PNG and save the files one by one or as a single ZIP.
Pick PNG over JPG when the JPEG XL image has transparency, sharp graphics or text, or when you plan to keep editing it. PNG adds no new loss; JPG would compress the picture a second time.
JXL to PNG: the lossless way out of JPEG XL
JPEG XL has two coding modes. VarDCT is the lossy one, used for most photos. Modular mode can be fully lossless and is often chosen for screenshots, scanned art and archival masters. Either way, an app that does not decode .jxl shows nothing, and the question is how to get the pixels out without spending any more quality.
PNG answers that. Since the first specification in 1996 and its later standardization as ISO/IEC 15948, PNG has compressed losslessly with DEFLATE, so whatever comes out of the JPEG XL decoder is stored bit for bit. Re-encoding to JPG instead adds a second round of lossy compression on top of the first, which shows as blur around text and banding in skies.
The cost is file size. A lossless .jxl usually beats PNG for the same pixels by a clear margin, and a lossy one beats it by much more. That is fine for a working copy you will open in an editor, but it is the reason to keep the original .jxl for storage.
JXL
JPEG XL
JPEG XL is a modern image format standardised as ISO/IEC 18181 in 2021–2022. It offers efficient lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, HDR and very high resolutions, and it can losslessly repack existing JPEG files about 20% smaller. Decoding is fast and progressive. Browser support is still incomplete, and many apps and websites cannot open JXL yet.

Portable Network Graphics
PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

JPEG XL goes to PNG when you want an editable, pixel-exact copy with its transparency intact, for a design tool or a workflow that does not decode .jxl; JPG is the choice only when file size matters more than exactness.
Alpha, bit depth and HDR: what PNG keeps
| from ↓ · to → | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| JXL lossless | JXL lossless to PNG: yes | – JXL lossless to JPG: no |
| JXL lossy | JXL lossy to PNG: yes | – JXL lossy to JPG: no |
| JXL + alpha | JXL + alpha to PNG: yes | – JXL + alpha to JPG: no |

| JXL animated | – JXL animated to PNG: no | – JXL animated to JPG: no |
Transparency is the clearest win: both formats store a full 8-bit or wider alpha channel, so logos, stickers and cut-out product shots keep their edges. Bit depth is where the formats part. JPEG XL can hold up to 32-bit floating-point samples per channel, enough for HDR and scientific imagery, while PNG tops out at 16 bits per channel of integer data.
PNG Third Edition, published by the W3C in 2025, added a chunk for signaling HDR content, but most viewers and editors still treat PNG as standard range. The converter outputs sRGB by default, which is what browsers and design tools expect. Choose Keep original under Color space if your workflow manages profiles itself.
Animated JPEG XL files are uncommon, but they exist. PNG here is a single still image, so pick Export every frame as a separate file if you need the whole sequence. For background on the newer formats in general, read AVIF, HEIC and WebP explained; for a different source with the same lossless target, AVIF to PNG works the same way.
JPEG XL to PNG questions
Is converting JXL to PNG lossless?
The step itself is. The JPEG XL file is decoded and the resulting pixels are written to PNG with lossless compression, so nothing is thrown away on the way. If the .jxl was lossy to begin with, its existing compression artifacts are copied faithfully too; PNG cannot undo them.
Why is my PNG several times larger than the .jxl?
JPEG XL compresses far more efficiently, especially in lossy mode, where it discards detail you are unlikely to see. PNG's DEFLATE compression must keep every pixel, so a lossy photo stored as PNG typically grows a lot. Flat graphics and screenshots grow much less.
Does the transparent background survive the conversion?
Yes. Both formats have a full alpha channel, so soft edges and semi-transparent shadows come through unchanged. Converting to JXL to JPG instead would fill those areas with a solid color.
What happens to an HDR JPEG XL file?
The PNG holds standard dynamic range sRGB, so highlights brighter than paper white are mapped into the normal range and the extra brightness is not carried. Keep the .jxl as your HDR master and use the PNG for editing, sharing and the web.
Can I convert the PNG back to JPEG XL later?
Yes. Convert to offers JXL as an output on the image converter, with a Lossless checkbox. A lossless JXL made from the PNG returns the same pixels in a smaller file.
Which programs can open the PNG but not the original .jxl?
Chrome, Edge and most Android apps, older versions of Photoshop, and nearly every upload form on the web. PNG has been a W3C Recommendation since 1996, so support is close to universal.
