SVG to GIF Converter

Draw an SVG as a GIF image at the width you choose, for places that accept GIF but cannot show vector files. The result is a still picture with a palette of up to 256 colors that stays transparent wherever the SVG has nothing drawn.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the SVG files

Add up to 20 .svg files, 95 MB each, from your computer or by dragging them onto the upload area.

  2. 2

    Set the pixel width

This page draws the vector 600 px wide. Change the number under Resize output image in Advanced settings; the height follows the drawing's proportions.

  3. 3

    Convert to GIF

Press Convert to GIF and download each image, or the whole set as a ZIP. Check one file on the background it will sit on before you use it.

Converting SVG to GIF trades a resolution-free drawing for a fixed grid of at most 256 colors, which is fine for flat logos and icons and a poor fit for gradients.

Rasterize SVG to GIF at the width you need

An SVG is a set of instructions: draw this path, fill it with this color, place this text. A GIF is the opposite, a grid of pixels each pointing to one of up to 256 palette entries. Converting means drawing the instructions once at a chosen pixel width and storing the result, which is why the width under Resize output image matters more than any other setting here. This page starts at 600 px.

GIF dates from 1987, when CompuServe published it, and its 1989 revision, GIF89a, added transparency and frame delays. That age is its main strength today: software that refuses newer formats, from older forum engines to some mail clients and ad networks, still displays GIF. An SVG, by contrast, is blocked from many upload forms because it is XML that could carry scripts.

Because the source is vector, you can draw it at any width without losing sharpness. Pick the size the GIF will actually be shown at; scaling a small GIF up later brings back the blurriness the SVG never had.

SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG is an XML-based vector format standardised by the W3C in 2001. Instead of pixels it describes shapes, paths and text, so it stays sharp at any size and is usually tiny for logos and icons. It supports transparency, CSS styling, scripting and animation, and every browser renders it natively. SVG is unsuitable for photographs, and complex illustrations can become slow to render. Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and browsers can open and edit it.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

SVG to GIF exists for destinations stuck on GIF, such as email signatures, legacy forums and ad slots, that need a small flat image of a vector logo; turning a GIF into SVG is a tracing job aimed at getting scalable artwork back.

Animated SVG to GIF: what is not converted

SMIL, CSS and script animation are dropped

An SVG that moves in the browser through animate elements, CSS keyframes or JavaScript becomes a single still GIF frame showing the starting state. For a moving GIF, record the animation as a video and convert that with the video to GIF tool.

256 colors and one-bit transparency in practice

Most SVG logos use a handful of flat colors, so the palette limit costs nothing. The trouble spots are anti-aliased edges and gradients. Every curved edge in a rendered SVG contains in-between pixels that are partly transparent; GIF has to make each of them fully visible or fully clear, which can leave a stair-stepped outline or a pale fringe.

The fix is to decide the background before converting. If the GIF will sit on a white email body, give the SVG a white background rectangle; on a dark forum theme, use that theme's color. The edge pixels then blend into the right color and the outline stays smooth. If you cannot know in advance, PNG is safer.

SVG to GIF questions

Why use GIF instead of PNG for an SVG logo?

Only when the destination demands GIF, such as an old CMS, a forum signature or an ad template that lists GIF as the image type. PNG keeps soft edges and unlimited colors, so SVG to PNG is the better default whenever both are allowed.

Will my animated SVG become an animated GIF?

No. The converter draws the SVG once, in its starting state, so SMIL animation elements, CSS keyframes and scripts do not run and you get one still frame. To capture motion, record the animation playing in a browser as a video, then use video to GIF.

Why do the edges of my logo look jagged or have a light halo?

GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, so the smooth, partly transparent edge pixels of an SVG have to be either kept or dropped. Edges that were blended for one background show a fringe on another. Add a background rectangle in the color of the target page before converting, and the edges blend cleanly.

What happens to gradients in the SVG?

A GIF palette holds at most 256 colors, so smooth gradients have to be approximated. Short gradients look fine; large, subtle ones show steps or a dotted dither pattern. Flat-color logos and icons, the usual SVG content, fit within the palette easily.

Can I use the GIF in an email signature?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons people need this conversion. Gmail and Outlook do not display SVG images in messages, while GIF has displayed in email clients for decades. Keep the width modest, around 300 to 600 px, so the signature stays light.

Which SVG size settings does the converter read?

It uses the drawing's width, height and viewBox to work out the proportions, then draws it at the pixel width you set. Because the source is vector, choosing a larger width costs no sharpness, only file size.
