How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the GIF

Add up to 20 GIFs, 95 MB each. Animated and still GIFs both work.

  2. 2

    Choose which frames you want

Under Advanced settings, Animated input is set to First frame only. Switch it to Export every frame as a separate file to get the whole sequence.

  3. 3

    Press Convert to PNG

A still GIF gives one PNG. An animation split into frames comes back as numbered PNGs in a ZIP.

A GIF to PNG conversion gives you the first frame as a lossless still by default, or every frame as its own PNG when you switch Animated input.

Convert GIF to PNG: one still or every frame

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and the 1989 revision, GIF89a, added the two features people still use it for: a transparent color and a delay between frames. That is why a GIF can be a logo with a clear background, a reaction loop, or both. PNG keeps the first and drops the second, because a standard PNG is always one image.

So the question to answer before converting is which picture you want. For an icon, a sticker or a logo saved as GIF, the first frame is the whole image. For an animation, you might want the cover frame for a thumbnail or a blog preview, or all frames to edit one by one, rebuild as a sprite sheet for a game, or reassemble as a video. Both routes are a single setting on this page.

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

PNG converter

People convert GIF to PNG to get a still image or individual frames they can edit, with transparency intact; the opposite trip squeezes a PNG into 256 colors for software that only shows GIF.

What happens to the palette and transparency

  1. Palette read

Each GIF pixel is an index into a table of up to 256 colors; the converter looks up the real color.

  2. Transparency mapped

The one color marked transparent becomes fully transparent PNG pixels. Every other pixel is fully opaque.

  3. Lossless PNG written

Pixels are stored exactly as shown. Later edits and saves add no compression artifacts.

File size can go either way. GIF uses LZW compression on palette indices; PNG uses DEFLATE with filtering, which is usually more efficient on the same flat graphic. A still GIF logo often shrinks a little. A frame from a dithered photo GIF can grow, because the speckle pattern that faked extra colors is hard to compress losslessly.

If the PNG is going somewhere that wants JPG, go straight to GIF to JPG and pick the background color for the transparent parts there. If you want the motion back later as a smaller, higher-quality loop, the frames you export here are a good start; for clips recorded on a phone, read how to make a GIF from a video instead.

GIF to PNG questions

Which frame do I get when I convert an animated GIF to PNG?

The first one, by default. That is often the frame the creator chose as a cover, but some GIFs open on a blank or faded frame. If yours does, export every frame and keep the one you like.

How do I extract every frame of a GIF as PNG?

Set Animated input to Export every frame as a separate file before you press Convert to PNG. Each frame becomes its own PNG, numbered in playback order, and they download together as a ZIP. This is the usual way to build a sprite sheet or pick a thumbnail.

Will the transparent background of my GIF survive?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so the GIF's transparent color comes across as transparent pixels. What does not improve is the edge: GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so jagged outlines stay jagged.

Does PNG show more colors than the GIF had?

No. The GIF's palette caps it at 256 colors per frame, and converting cannot invent the shades that were dropped when the GIF was made. Banding and dither dots stay visible; they are now just stored in a format that will not add more loss.

Is there a way to keep the animation as PNG?

Standard PNG holds a single picture. The animated variant, APNG, keeps motion with full color and soft transparency; use GIF to APNG for that. For a single still, this page is the right tool.
