JFIF to PNG Converter
A .jfif file is an ordinary JPEG with an unusual extension. Converting it to PNG gives you a lossless working copy that design apps and templates accept, and that will not degrade further each time you save it.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Drop in the .jfif files
Drag the images onto the upload area or pick them from Downloads, where Chrome and Edge usually leave them. Up to 20 files per batch, 95 MB each.
- 2
Leave the output on PNG
Convert to is already set to PNG. Under Advanced settings you can set a width, keep or strip metadata, and keep the color profile, which is on by default.
- 3
Press Convert to PNG
Download each PNG on its own, or take the ZIP when you converted several. Uploads and results are removed after 30 minutes.
How do I convert JFIF to PNG?
Upload the .jfif files, keep Convert to on PNG and press Convert to PNG. The picture looks the same, the file is bigger, and later edits stop adding JPEG artifacts.
What the JPEG File Interchange Format name means
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. The JPEG standard of 1992 described how to compress pixels but left out practical details such as pixel density and color layout, so Eric Hamilton at C-Cube Microsystems wrote a short companion spec that filled them in. Almost every .jpg on the internet is technically a JFIF file. The ITU later published it as T.871 in 2011.
The .jfif extension is a Windows quirk. When a registry entry maps the image/jpeg type to .jfif, Chrome and Edge save web images with that ending, and some Outlook attachments arrive the same way. The bytes inside match a .jpg, so renaming often works, but you still hold a lossy JPEG.
Converting to PNG decodes the JPEG once and stores the result losslessly. Crops, annotations and repeated saves then cost nothing. With JPEG, every save re-compresses the image and the blocky noise around edges builds up a little each time.

JFIF
JPEG File Interchange Format
JFIF is the original container specification for JPEG data, written in 1992 by Eric Hamilton at C-Cube Microsystems. A .jfif file holds exactly the same lossy JPEG image data as a .jpg file; only the extension differs. Windows and some browsers save downloaded web images with the .jfif extension, which confuses apps and upload forms that only accept .jpg. Quality, size and limitations are identical to JPEG: no transparency, no animation, and some loss on every re-save. Most image viewers open it, and simply renaming it to .jpg usually works.

Portable Network Graphics
PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

People convert JFIF to PNG to get a lossless copy for editing or for a tool that takes PNG only; nobody converts PNG to JFIF on purpose, since that is just saving a JPEG under an older name.
JFIF to PNG or JFIF to JPG: which copy you need
PNG
A lossless copy of the decoded JPEG.
- No further loss on later edits
- Accepted by templates and design tools that ask for PNG
- Ready for you to erase a background into transparency
- Several times larger for photos
JPG
The same JPEG data under the extension forms expect.
- Size barely changes
- Accepted by nearly every upload form
- Each later save re-compresses
Getting a usable PNG out of a .jfif photo
If the PNG is too heavy for where it is going, shrink the pixel dimensions rather than going back to JPEG: set Resize output image to a width such as 1200 px under Advanced settings and the file drops roughly in proportion to the pixel count. If a form still has a hard cap, convert to PNG for editing and export the final version through Compress PNG to 200 KB.
Text on screenshots and memes saved as .jfif often shows a faint halo around letters, and PNG keeps that halo exactly. For logos you plan to cut out, convert first, remove the background, then export to whatever the destination wants. The image converter covers ICO, WebP, TIFF and every other pair.
JFIF to PNG: answers before you convert
Will a JFIF to PNG conversion make my photo sharper?
No. The JPEG compression in the .jfif already happened when the image was saved, and PNG stores those pixels exactly as they are, artifacts included. What you gain is that nothing gets worse from here on, no matter how many times you edit and save.
Why is the PNG ten times the size of the .jfif?
PNG compresses without discarding anything, and photographs have too much fine noise for lossless compression to shrink much. JPEG throws away detail you barely see. Screenshots and flat graphics grow far less.
Can the PNG have a transparent background?
Only if you remove the background afterwards. JFIF holds no alpha channel, so every pixel arrives opaque and the PNG starts fully opaque too. Once it is a PNG, you can erase the background in any editor and the transparency will be saved.
Should I pick PNG or JPG for a .jfif from Chrome?
Pick JPG when you only need the file accepted somewhere, because it stays small and the image data barely changes; JFIF to JPG covers that case. Pick PNG when you are going to edit, annotate or crop the image several times, or when the place you upload to lists PNG only.
Do I lose the camera data when converting .jfif to PNG?
Images saved from a browser rarely carry camera data. If yours does, untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings to keep it; leave it ticked to drop GPS position and comments before sharing.
Can I turn a folder of JFIF images into PNG at once?
Yes, twenty at a time. Select the .jfif files in File Explorer, drag them in together and download the batch as one ZIP. There is no daily limit.
