HEIF to JPG Converter
Turn .heif photos and the .HIF files that recent Canon and Sony cameras write into JPGs that open on any computer, phone or upload form. The converter reads the image inside the container and hands back a standard 8-bit JPG.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the HEIF or HIF files
Upload .heif, .hif or .heic files straight from the memory card or phone folder. Up to 20 per batch, 95 MB each.
- 2
Check quality and color space
Quality is set to 90 because camera files have fine detail worth keeping. Color space is sRGB, which is what screens and printers expect from a JPG.
- 3
Press Convert to JPG
Download the JPGs individually or as one ZIP. Originals and results are deleted after 30 minutes.
HEIF vs HEIC: container versus codec
The High Efficiency Image File Format was published by MPEG as ISO/IEC 23008-12 in 2015. It describes a box structure that can hold one image, a burst, an image with a depth map, thumbnails and metadata. What it does not fix is how the pixels are compressed; that is left to a codec stored inside.
Apple made HEIF with HEVC compression the default for iPhone photos in iOS 11 (2017) and used the .heic extension for it. Other makers used the same container but kept the generic .heif name, or Canon's and Sony's .HIF. So when a program says it supports HEIC but chokes on your .heif, the reason is usually a mismatch in how the extension is registered, not a different picture inside. The HEIC to JPG page covers iPhone photos specifically.

- A container format (ISO/IEC 23008-12) that wraps compressed images and their metadata. Files with HEVC inside are called HEIC, files with AV1 inside are called AVIF.
Where .heif and .HIF photos come from
| Source | Extension | Codec inside | Bit depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad camera (iOS 11 and later) | .heic | HEVC | 8-bit |
| Samsung Galaxy, High efficiency pictures switch on | .heic or .heif | HEVC | 8-bit |
| Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, R5, R6 in HDR PQ mode | .HIF | HEVC | 10-bit |
| Sony Alpha 1, A7S III, A7 IV with HEIF selected | .HIF | HEVC | 10-bit, 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 |
| Images saved from websites | .avif | AV1 | 8-bit or 10-bit |
HEIC
High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC is the HEIF image container (an MPEG standard from 2015) holding pictures compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad in 2017 because it stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG with similar quality. It can hold depth data, Live Photo sequences, transparency and 10-bit colour. Support outside the Apple ecosystem is patchy: many Windows PCs, web browsers, websites and online forms cannot open HEIC without extra codecs.

JPEG image
JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

People convert HEIF to JPG when photos from a Samsung phone or a Canon or Sony camera in HEIF mode have to open on a PC, in an editor or on a portal that knows only JPEG.
Converting 10-bit camera HEIF files to 8-bit JPG
Camera HEIF files exist because JPEG is limited to 8 bits per channel, 256 steps of brightness, while a 10-bit HEIF has 1,024. Canon writes HEIF only in HDR PQ mode, where those extra steps carry highlight detail meant for an HDR display. A JPG cannot store that range, so converting maps the picture into ordinary sRGB brightness. Expect bright skies and lights to look calmer than in the camera's HDR playback.
Two settings matter here. Leave Color space on sRGB so browsers and printers show the colors as intended rather than guessing. Keep Quality at 90 or higher; the smooth gradients that 10-bit files handle well are exactly where low-quality JPG starts to band. If you need to keep the full range for grading, convert to TIFF on the image converter and export the JPG from your editor.
HEIF to JPG: common questions
Is HEIF the same as HEIC?
HEIF is the container; HEIC is the name for a HEIF file whose pictures are compressed with HEVC. Every HEIC is a HEIF, but a HEIF can hold other codecs, and AVIF is in fact HEIF with AV1 inside. For converting to JPG the difference does not matter: the converter reads either.
Why does my Canon save .HIF files instead of JPG?
On models such as the EOS-1D X Mark III, EOS R5 and R6, turning on HDR PQ shooting switches the compressed format from JPEG to 10-bit HEIF, because 8-bit JPEG cannot hold the extra brightness range. Turn HDR PQ off and the camera writes JPGs again.
Why does the JPG look flatter than the photo did on my camera?
A 10-bit HDR HEIF holds brighter highlights than an 8-bit sRGB JPG can show. When the file is converted, that range is squeezed into standard brightness, so skies and lamps can look less punchy. That is the limit of JPG, not of the conversion.
Does Windows need anything extra to open HEIF?
Windows 10 and 11 read HEIF through two Microsoft Store add-ons: HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, and the HEVC one is a paid download on most PCs. Converting to JPG avoids installing either on every computer the photo reaches.
Can I rename a .heif file to .jpg instead?
No. The pixels inside are HEVC-compressed, and a program that expects JPEG data will refuse the file or show an error whatever the extension says. The image has to be decoded and re-encoded, which is what this page does.
Is JPG or PNG the better target for a HEIF photo?
JPG for photos you share, print or upload, since the file stays reasonably small. PNG only if you plan to edit the picture repeatedly and want to avoid further compression; HEIF to PNG does that, at several times the size.
