Document Converter

Move a document from the format it was written in to the one the next person or program needs: an old DOC to DOCX, a Pages file to Word, Markdown notes to a formatted document, a PDF to LaTeX or a HWP file to something Word can open.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the files

Add up to 20 documents, presentations or spreadsheets, each up to 95 MB. PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF, Pages, Markdown, TeX, HWP, HTML and more are accepted.

  2. 2

    Pick the target format

Search the Convert to list for DOCX, ODT, MD, TEX, PPTX, XLSX and others, then choose how much Formatting to keep: Keep all, Simple or Text only.

  3. 3

    Convert and open

Press Convert to DOCX (the button names the format you chose) and download each file or a ZIP of the batch.

Pick a target in Convert to, choose how much Formatting to keep, and the converter rebuilds your document in the new format with headings, tables and images in place.

Why the same document needs different formats

Word processors agree on what a document is, headings, paragraphs, tables and pictures, but each stores it differently. Microsoft's DOCX follows Office Open XML, published as ECMA-376 in 2006 and as ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008. LibreOffice and many public bodies use ODT, the OpenDocument Format that became ISO/IEC 26300 in 2006. Apple's Pages keeps its own package, Korean institutions still exchange HWP files from Hancom Office, and writers who live in plain text use Markdown, the syntax John Gruber published in 2004, or LaTeX for academic papers.

Trouble starts at the boundary between them. A university template arrives as ODT, a colleague on a Mac sends a Pages file, a government notice is published as HWP, an archive holds DOC files from the 1990s. Converting gives you a copy your own software opens properly, rather than a best guess. The most requested routes have their own pages, among them DOCX to DOC for old software, Markdown to DOCX for notes that need to become a formatted report and HWP to DOCX for Hangul files.

PDF is accepted as input as well. Text-based PDFs are rebuilt into paragraphs; scanned PDFs are read with OCR scanned pages, which is on by default, so the words become editable instead of staying a picture. For converting into PDF rather than out of it, use convert to PDF.

Document converter settings in plain words

Output and content

  • Formatting: Keep all, Simple (headings, lists, bold, tables) or Text only.
  • Include images: copies pictures and charts; TXT and Markdown get them in a ZIP beside the text.
  • Include comments: carries comments and tracked changes over.
  • OCR scanned pages: PDF input only, reads scanned pages as text.

Pages and images

  • Pages: the whole file or a Page range such as 1-3, 5 for PDF and slide input.
  • Image resolution: 72, 150 or 300 DPI when the target is PNG.
  • Spreadsheet sheets: all sheets or only the first one.

Text files

  • Text encoding: UTF-8 by default, plus UTF-8 with BOM, UTF-16 and legacy code pages.
  • Line endings: LF for macOS, Linux and code; CRLF for older Windows programs.
  • CSV delimiter: comma, semicolon or tab.

Which conversion fits your situation

  1. Someone cannot open your file

Send DOCX. It opens in Word 2007 and later, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, which covers nearly every reader.

  2. You are moving notes into a CMS or Git

Choose MD with Formatting on Simple. Headings become # lines and tables become pipe tables that most Markdown renderers understand.

  3. A journal wants LaTeX

Choose TEX and open the result in a LaTeX editor. Expect to check equations and bibliography entries by hand.

  4. An office in Korea asks for Hangul

Choose HWP so the file opens natively in Hancom Office, the standard in many Korean schools and public offices.

  5. Old software rejects DOCX

Choose DOC. Word 97–2003 and some older line-of-business tools only read the binary format.

  6. You need the words only

Choose TXT with Formatting on Text only, ideal for pasting into forms, translation tools or AI assistants.

What document conversion can and cannot do

MythRenaming .pages to .docx converts the file.

FactChanging an extension changes nothing inside. A real conversion rewrites the content into the target format's structure.

MythConverting DOC to DOCX loses formatting.

FactDOCX can store everything DOC could. Only very old features, such as WordBasic macros, are left behind.

MythA converted PDF keeps its scanned text as pictures.

FactWith OCR scanned pages on, scanned pages are recognized and written as real, editable text.

Uploads and converted files are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing, and no account is needed. The how it works page describes what happens to a file between upload and download.

Document converter questions

What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?

DOC is the binary format Word used up to Word 2003. DOCX, introduced with Word 2007, is a ZIP package of XML files standardized as Office Open XML (ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500). DOCX files are smaller, recover better from damage and open in every current word processor, so convert to DOC only for software that cannot read DOCX.

Can Word open a Pages document?

No, Microsoft Word cannot read the .pages format that Apple's Pages app saves. Convert it to DOCX here, or in Pages use File, Export To, Word on a Mac. The Pages to Word page explains what survives the trip, such as tables and images, and what may shift, such as some Apple-only fonts.

How good is the LaTeX I get from a PDF?

Headings, paragraphs, lists and simple tables come out as clean LaTeX commands, and images are saved alongside. Mathematical formulas in a PDF are usually drawn glyphs rather than equations, so complex math needs checking and retyping. The result is a starting point for Overleaf or another editor, not a perfect source file.

Which formatting level should I choose?

Keep all copies fonts, colors, tables and layout as far as the target format allows. Simple keeps the structure, meaning headings, lists, bold and tables, and drops fonts and colors, which is good for importing into a blog or a wiki. Text only gives the words alone.

Can I convert presentations and spreadsheets with this tool too?

Yes. Old PPT decks convert to PPTX and back, Keynote and ODP files convert to PPTX, and XLS, ODS, Numbers and CSV files convert to XLSX or the other way round. For heavy data work such as JSON or SQL, the data converter has more options.

Why does my converted text file show strange characters?

The program opening it guessed the wrong text encoding. UTF-8, the default under Text encoding, covers every language. If Notepad or Excel on Windows shows garbled accents, convert again with UTF-8 with BOM; pick Shift_JIS, GB18030 or EUC-KR only for old Japanese, Chinese or Korean software.

Will comments and tracked changes come across?

Only if you turn on Include comments. By default the converter produces a clean final copy, which is what most people want when sending a document on, and avoids leaking review notes.
