WebP to BMP Converter

Some programs only read plain bitmaps. This converter decodes your WebP files and writes standard 24-bit BMPs, filling any transparency with a color you choose, so the image opens in software that predates WebP by decades.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload WebP images

Drag in the .webp files saved from websites or exported from an app. Up to 20 per batch, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Choose a fill color

Under Transparent areas pick white, black or Custom color for any see-through pixels. Use Resize output image if the target screen has a fixed resolution.

  3. 3

    Convert to BMP

Press Convert to BMP and download the bitmaps, or one ZIP for the batch.

Software that wants BMP instead of WebP

Google introduced WebP in 2010 to make web pages lighter, and every current browser displays it. Outside the browser the picture is different. BMP dates back to the early versions of Windows and OS/2, and its appeal is that a program can read it with a few dozen lines of code: a short header followed by rows of raw pixels. That is why so many small or old tools never learned anything else.

Typical cases: a TFT screen on an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico that loads 24-bit bitmaps from an SD card, a label printer or engraving machine whose driver software takes BMP, an older game or mod tool that expects bitmap textures, and Windows installs where WebP decoding was never added. If the receiving program accepts PNG, choose that instead; it is lossless too and far smaller, and BMP to PNG brings files back the other way.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

BMP

Bitmap image

BMP is Microsoft's device-independent bitmap format, native to Windows since its early versions. It usually stores pixels uncompressed, so quality is perfect but files are very large compared with PNG or JPEG. Newer BMP versions can hold an alpha channel, but many programs ignore it. The format is simple to read and write, which keeps it alive in older software, embedded systems and some industrial tools. Windows, macOS and nearly every image editor can open BMP files.

WebP goes to BMP when a downloaded web image has to feed a legacy Windows program, an embedded display or a tool that only parses raw bitmaps, accepting a far larger file for zero decoding effort.

WebP to BMP: what changes and what does not

MythBMP brings back detail the WebP compression removed.

FactConverting stores the decoded pixels exactly as they are; it cannot restore anything lost when the WebP was made.

MythRenaming .webp to .bmp is enough for old software.

FactThe bytes stay WebP, so the program reports a corrupt or unknown file. The data has to be decoded and rewritten.

MythA BMP is always several megabytes.

FactBMP size scales with pixels: an 800 × 480 display image is about 1.1 MB, a 320 × 240 one about 230 KB.

Preparing a BMP for a small display

Embedded screens usually expect the bitmap at their native resolution because they draw pixels one to one and do not scale. Set Resize output image to the panel width, for example 320 or 800 px, so the converter downsizes before writing the file. That also keeps the BMP small enough for the microcontroller's memory or SD card read speed.

Check the fill color too. A white background around a logo on a black display shows as a bright box, so pick Black or a custom color matching the screen. If you are unsure why WebP shows up so often in downloads, why websites serve WebP explains it.

WebP to BMP questions

Why would anyone convert a small WebP into a huge BMP?

Because the program on the other end cannot decode WebP and can decode BMP. Industrial HMI panels, older CAD and embroidery software, kiosk and signage players, and microcontroller display libraries often read only uncompressed bitmaps. File size is not a concern for them; simplicity of decoding is.

How is the BMP file size calculated?

For a 24-bit BMP it is width × height × 3 bytes, plus padding that rounds each row up to a multiple of 4 bytes, plus a 54-byte header. A 1920 × 1080 image is therefore 6,220,854 bytes, about 6.2 MB, whatever the picture shows.

Does the converter keep WebP transparency in the BMP?

No. Alpha support in BMP exists only in later header versions that many readers ignore, so the output is a plain 24-bit bitmap and transparent pixels take the fill color you selected. For a file that keeps transparency, convert WebP to PNG instead.

Will Windows 10 Paint open WebP without converting?

Only if the WebP Image Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed; on many work machines it is not, and Windows 7 Paint has no WebP support at all. A BMP opens in every version of Paint since the format's early Windows days.

What happens to an animated WebP?

BMP holds a single image. By default the first frame is converted; set Animated input to export every frame as a separate BMP if you need the whole sequence.
