GIF to APNG Converter
APNG is an animated PNG: the same frames and timing as a GIF in a format that can hold full color and soft transparency. Convert here when a sticker platform asks for APNG or when you want to edit an animation without the 256-color ceiling.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.

Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

Why convert GIF to APNG
GIF dates from 1987, when screens showed 256 colors at most, and its rules still apply: up to 256 colors in a frame's palette and a single color that is either fully transparent or fully opaque. That is why GIF stickers have jagged, halo-ringed edges on a dark chat background.
APNG removes both limits. Each frame is a PNG with up to 24-bit color and an 8-bit alpha channel, so edges can fade into any background. Mozilla proposed the format in 2004 and Firefox 3 played it in 2008; Safari followed in version 8 (2014) and Chrome in version 59 (2017). The W3C's third edition of the PNG specification, finished in 2025, made APNG part of the official standard.

GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

APNG
Animated PNG
APNG is an extension of PNG that stores several frames to create an animation, proposed by Mozilla developers in 2004. Unlike GIF it supports full 24-bit colour and smooth 8-bit alpha transparency, so animated edges look clean on any background. Older PNG viewers simply show the first frame, which makes the format backward compatible. All modern browsers play APNG, but many editors, messaging apps and social networks still treat it as a static PNG. Files can be large because each frame is stored losslessly.

GIF goes to APNG when a sticker store or an app requires animated PNG, or when an animation needs editing beyond GIF's 256 colors and one-bit transparency.
GIF to APNG for LINE and Discord stickers
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Resize to 320 px wide before uploading a sticker | Expect smoother color from a dithered GIF |
| Keep LINE stickers between 5 and 20 frames | Rename .gif to .png and hope it animates |
| Check the file size against the platform limit | Send APNG in email; most clients show one frame |
| Keep the original GIF for places that need GIF | Use APNG for long clips; use video instead |
Where an animated PNG plays, and where it freezes
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all animate APNG in a web page, and LINE and Discord play it in their apps. Many image editors and most email clients read only the default image and show a still frame, which is harmless but easy to mistake for a failed conversion. Open the result in a browser tab to check it.
If an animation will mainly live in chats and email, the GIF is still the safer file; APNG to GIF converts back when a platform rejects the PNG. For anything longer than a few seconds, a video is far lighter: GIF to WebM keeps the loop at a fraction of the size.
GIF to APNG converter questions
Will converting a GIF to APNG improve its colors?
No. The GIF's frames were already reduced to 256 colors, and no converter can bring the lost shades back. The APNG reproduces the GIF exactly, losslessly; what you gain is a file you can now edit, recolor or add soft shadows to without hitting the palette limit again.
Why does the APNG end in .png and not .apng?
APNG was designed to be backward compatible, so it uses the normal PNG extension and MIME type. Software that understands the animation chunks plays it; older software shows the first frame as an ordinary PNG instead of an error.
What are LINE's rules for animated stickers?
LINE Creators Market takes animated stickers only as APNG: at most 320 × 270 px, 5 to 20 frames, up to 4 seconds of playback and 300 KB per file. Resize under Advanced settings and trim long GIFs before converting.
Can I upload an APNG as a Discord sticker?
Yes. Discord server stickers accept APNG files of up to 512 KB and recommend 320 × 320 px. A GIF reaction that is too heavy often fits once it is resized to 320 px and saved as APNG.
Is APNG smaller than GIF?
Sometimes, not always. Both formats compress losslessly and store full frames or changed regions, so flat cartoons often come out a little smaller and noisy, dithered GIFs a little larger. For the smallest animation, GIF to WebP usually wins.
- APNG to GIF ConverterConvert animated PNG (APNG) files to GIF so they move in chats, forums and email. Frames and delays are kept; up to 20 files, deleted after 30 minutes.
- GIF to WebP ConverterConvert GIF to animated WebP: every frame and its timing kept, files often well under half the size. For websites and WhatsApp stickers. No account needed.
- GIF to PNG ConverterConvert a GIF to PNG with its transparency kept: take the first frame as a still, or export every frame of an animation as separate PNG files.
- GIF to WebM ConverterConvert GIF to WebM video: same loop, typically a tenth of the size. Fits Discord uploads, Telegram video stickers and muted autoplay video on web pages.
- GIF to MP4 ConverterConvert GIF to MP4 video online. Animated GIFs become H.264 clips that are typically a fraction of the size and play smoothly in chats and on social media.
- Compress GIF to 256 KBShrink an animated GIF to 256 KB or less at 128 px wide, the file limit and recommended size for Discord custom emoji. Keeps the loop; no account.
