PNG to AVIF Converter

AVIF stores images with the compression of the AV1 video codec, and for the kind of picture that ends up as a heavy PNG it often produces the smallest file of any web format. This converter turns PNGs into AVIF with their transparency intact.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload your PNGs

Add up to 20 PNG files, 95 MB each: product cut-outs, illustrations, screenshots or photos that were saved as PNG.

  2. 2

    Choose lossy or lossless

Quality starts at 70, a good balance for photos and illustrations. Tick Lossless under Advanced settings only when every pixel must match the PNG exactly.

  3. 3

    Convert to AVIF

Press Convert to AVIF. Encoding takes a little longer than for JPG or WebP; download the files or the ZIP when they are ready.

Answer

Why convert PNG to AVIF?

To make images on a website much lighter. A PNG photo or transparent illustration converted to lossy AVIF is typically a small fraction of its original size, keeps its transparency, and displays in every current major browser.

What AVIF is: AV1 video compression for still images

AVIF comes from the Alliance for Open Media, a group whose founding members include Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix and Amazon. The alliance released the royalty-free AV1 video codec in 2018 and the AVIF image format built on it in 2019. An AVIF file is essentially one AV1 key frame inside a HEIF-style container, the same container structure Apple uses for HEIC photos.

That heritage brings tools JPEG and PNG never had: large adaptive block sizes, sophisticated prediction from neighboring areas, film-grain synthesis, and color depths of 10 and 12 bits per channel for HDR. For a PNG holding a photo, it means a dramatic size reduction. For a PNG holding a flat logo, the saving is smaller but still usually real, with transparency preserved.

AVIF browser support: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge

Chrome was first, displaying AVIF from version 85 in August 2020. Firefox followed with version 93 in October 2021. Safari 16 added still AVIF images in 2022 on iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, and Safari 16.4 in March 2023 completed support, including animated AVIF. Edge, despite sharing Chrome's engine, only switched AVIF on in version 121 in January 2024.

Together these cover nearly everyone browsing today, but not every app around a website. Some email clients, social link previews and older CMS plugins still expect PNG, JPG or WebP. On your own pages, serve AVIF through a <picture> element with a PNG or WebP fallback, or let a CDN choose per visitor; for image editors, office documents and anything you send as an attachment, keep the PNG.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores still images and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec, and was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It usually produces smaller files than both JPEG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and HDR. Encoding is slower than older formats, and very fine textures can look smoothed at low quality settings. All major browsers now display AVIF, but many desktop apps, social platforms and older devices cannot open it.

PNG goes to AVIF to publish transparent graphics and PNG-saved photos at the smallest size modern browsers can display; AVIF comes back to PNG when an editor or office app cannot read it.

Screenshots and text need a higher setting

At low quality AVIF smooths fine detail, which suits photos but softens small letters and one-pixel UI lines. For screenshots raise Quality to 80–90, or keep them as PNG or lossless WebP.

PNG to AVIF questions

Is AVIF better than WebP for converting PNGs?

For photographic PNGs and soft illustrations, lossy AVIF is usually smaller than lossy WebP at the same visual quality. For screenshots and line art the gap narrows, and lossless WebP is often as small as lossless AVIF or smaller. If you only want one format with the widest support in tools and plugins, PNG to WebP is the simpler choice.

Does AVIF keep the transparent background of a PNG?

Yes. AVIF stores an alpha channel alongside the color image, so cut-outs, logos and soft shadows stay transparent. The alpha is compressed too, which is one reason transparent AVIFs are so much smaller than the PNGs they come from.

Should I use lossless AVIF?

Rarely. Lossless AVIF exists, but it is slow to encode and often no smaller than an optimized PNG or lossless WebP. Its strength is lossy compression. Use lossless only for archival copies or images that are compared pixel by pixel.

What quality setting should I pick for AVIF?

AVIF keeps its look at lower settings than JPG does. Around 60–70 suits photos and illustrations; raise it to 80 or more for screenshots with small text, where blurring around letters shows first. Check one result at full size before converting a large batch.

Can WordPress use AVIF images?

WordPress 6.5, released in April 2024, added AVIF to the formats the media library accepts, provided the server's image library supports it. Older versions need a plugin or a CDN that converts on the fly.

Which apps can open an AVIF file on my computer?

Current browsers open AVIF directly, so dragging a file into Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge works. Windows 11 shows AVIF in Photos with the free AV1 Video Extension, and macOS Ventura and later preview it natively. To edit it elsewhere, convert it back with AVIF to PNG.
