Answer

What does an online video converter actually change?

It decodes the clip and writes it again in the container and codec you pick, optionally at a new resolution, frame rate or size. MP4 with H.264 is the default because it plays on practically every device made since 2010.

Video formats and codecs, side by side

Codecs offered in Video codec, with the containers that can hold them. Dates are the year each codec was finalized.

H.265 / HEVCITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG, 2013MP4, MOV, MKV, M4ViPhones since iOS 11, recent Android, Macs; Windows needs an extra decoder

AV1Alliance for Open Media, 2018WebM, MKV, MP4Current browsers and recent phones; older hardware decodes it slowly

A video file is two layers. The outer layer is the container, which decides the extension and how video, audio and metadata are packed: MP4 is MPEG-4 Part 14, MOV is Apple's QuickTime format from 1991, MKV is the open Matroska format, WebM is Google's web-focused cut of Matroska, and AVI dates back to Microsoft in 1992. The inner layer is the codec, the method that squeezes the frames.

Most playback problems come from the codec, not the extension. An iPhone films in HEVC by default, so its MOV files can fail on a Windows PC that lacks Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions, even after the file is renamed. Converting to MOV to MP4 with H.264 fixes that. Matroska files from screen recorders and downloads go the same way through MKV to MP4, and web recordings through WebM to MP4.

Every setting in the video converter, in plain words

Convert to lists 13 video containers (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, FLV, M4V, MPEG, MPG, 3GP, TS, OGV), four animated image formats (GIF, WebP, APNG, AVIF) and PDF, which puts one frame on each page.

  • Video codec: Auto, H.264, H.265, VP9 or AV1, shown for MP4, MOV, MKV and M4V
  • Resolution: same as source, or a height from 2160p down to 240p; the width follows the aspect ratio and videos are never upscaled

Converted video won't play? Common causes

  • Black screen with sound on a Windows PC

The file is still HEVC or AV1 and the PC has no decoder for it. Convert again with Video codec set to H.264.

  • MOV plays on a Mac but the editor or LMS rejects it

Some upload forms only accept MP4. Choose MP4 output; the picture stays the same, only the wrapper and codec change.

  • No sound after converting to WebM

WebM only carries Opus or Vorbis audio. Leave Audio codec on Auto instead of forcing AAC or Copy original.

  • The new file is larger than the original

A low CRF value or upscaled frame rate can inflate the size. Return Quality (CRF) to 23, keep the source frame rate, or set Limit file size.

  • The clip starts or ends at the wrong moment

Check the time format in Start at and End at: 1:15 means one minute fifteen seconds, while 115 means 115 seconds.

Video converter questions

What is the difference between a video format and a video codec?

The format, or container, is the file wrapper you see in the extension: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM. The codec is the compression method used for the picture inside it, such as H.264 or AV1. A player needs to understand both, which is why an MP4 can still refuse to play when its codec is unsupported.

Which output should I choose if I just want the video to play everywhere?

MP4 with Video codec on Auto, which writes H.264 video and AAC audio. Every phone, browser, smart TV and editing app released in the last decade plays that combination, and most upload forms expect it.

Does converting a video reduce its quality?

Any re-encode is lossy, but at the default Quality (CRF) of 23 the difference is hard to see at normal viewing size. Use 18 when the result will be edited again, and avoid converting the same file back and forth, since each pass loses a little more detail.

Can this converter make a video smaller at the same time?

Yes. Lower the Resolution, raise the CRF value, or turn on Limit file size and type a maximum such as 10 MB. When the size is the only goal, compress video gives you more control, including two-pass encoding.

How do I convert a PowerPoint or a still picture into a video?

Upload the .pptx, .ppt or image file and choose MP4. Each slide or picture stays on screen for the number of seconds set in Seconds per slide, five by default. To put a picture behind a song, audio to video is the better fit.

Why is there no Video codec option when I pick WebM, AVI or GIF?

Those formats fix their own codec choice. WebM only allows VP8, VP9 or AV1, GIF is its own image format, and AVI output uses the codec the format expects, so the menu only appears for MP4, MOV, MKV and M4V, where several codecs are valid.

Will subtitles and chapters inside an MKV survive the conversion?

Do not count on it. The converter focuses on the picture and the main sound track, and formats like MP4 accept far fewer subtitle types than MKV. Keep the original file if its subtitle tracks matter, or export them separately with a subtitle tool first.
