JPG to PSD Converter
Some upload forms, templates and print services accept nothing but a .psd file, even when all you have is a photo. This page wraps each JPG in a Photoshop document so it passes those checks and opens in any PSD-aware editor.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.

Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add your JPG photos
Upload up to 20 JPG or JPEG files, 95 MB each. Phone photos are rotated upright first, because Auto orient is on.
- 2
Keep the original color
Color space is set to Keep original and Keep color profile is on, so an Adobe RGB or Display P3 photo keeps its profile inside the PSD. Both sit under Advanced settings.
- 3
Press Convert to PSD
Download the .psd files one by one or as a ZIP. Uploads and results are deleted after 30 minutes.
Can I convert a JPG into an editable PSD file?
Yes. Upload the JPG and press Convert to PSD. You get a Photoshop document with the photo on one layer, ready to edit and to add your own layers on top.
When converting JPG to PSD actually helps
If you own Photoshop, you rarely need this page: Photoshop has opened JPEG files since its early versions, and saving the open photo as Photoshop format produces a PSD. The conversion matters in three other situations. A print-on-demand shop, a template marketplace or a mockup service may validate uploads by extension and refuse anything that is not .psd. A designer or agency may ask clients to send source files as PSD so every asset sits in one format. And if you work without Photoshop, a PSD prepared here can be dropped straight into Photopea or another browser editor that treats PSD as its home format.
The JPG standard dates from 1992 and holds one flat image with lossy compression. Photoshop's PSD format, introduced with Photoshop 1.0 in 1990 and extended with layers in Photoshop 3.0, is built for editing. Wrapping one in the other does not add information; it changes which programs and checks accept the file.

JPEG image
JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

PSD
Adobe Photoshop Document
PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

People convert JPG to PSD when a template, marketplace or print service accepts only Photoshop files, or to start a layered edit from a photo; the PSD to JPG direction goes the other way and flattens a design for sharing.
Check this before you send a JPG as PSD to a print shop
- The pixel size is large enough for the print: at 300 DPI, a 10 × 8 in print needs 3000 × 2400 px.
- The shop says whether it wants RGB or CMYK; this converter writes RGB.
- The color profile is kept, so an Adobe RGB photo is not silently treated as sRGB.
- The photo is upright, which Auto orient handles for phone pictures.
- The shop accepts a single-layer PSD and does not expect named layers or a specific template.
Why the PSD is bigger than the JPG
Expect the PSD to be several times the size of the JPG. JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices and packs the rest tightly, while PSD stores the decoded pixels with lossless compression at most. A typical 12-megapixel phone photo of a few megabytes can become a PSD of tens of megabytes.
If an upload form caps the file size, scale the image down under Resize output image before converting, for example to a longest side of 4000 px. To go back the other way once your edits are finished, flatten the result with PSD to JPG. For logos or cut-outs that need a transparent background inside the PSD, start from a PNG with PNG to PSD instead, because a JPG has no transparency to carry over.
JPG to PSD questions
Will the PSD made from my JPG have layers?
It has exactly one layer, holding the photo. A JPG stores a single flat picture, so there is nothing to split into separate layers; no converter can recover a background, a subject and text as distinct layers from a flat photo. You add layers yourself once the file is open.
Do I need to convert a JPG to PSD before editing it in Photoshop?
No. Photoshop opens JPG files directly, and File > Save As with Photoshop format writes a PSD. Converting first only helps when you do not have Photoshop, when a website or person insists on receiving .psd, or when you need a batch of PSDs prepared at once.
Does converting JPG to PSD improve the image quality?
No. JPG compression artifacts and the original resolution are carried over pixel for pixel. The PSD is larger because it stores the pixels uncompressed or with lossless compression, but the picture looks identical to the JPG.
Which programs open the converted PSD?
Photoshop, Photopea, GIMP, Affinity Photo, Krita and Pixelmator Pro all read a single-layer RGB PSD. Because the file is simple, there is none of the layer-effect mismatch you sometimes see with complex documents from other editors.
Can I get a CMYK or 16-bit PSD for print?
The output is 8-bit RGB, which is what the JPG contained. In Photoshop, Image > Mode converts to CMYK with your printer's profile or to 16 bits per channel. Ask the print shop which profile they expect before changing modes.
What is the largest JPG I can turn into a PSD?
A PSD can be at most 30,000 px on either side and 2 GB in size. JPGs from cameras and phones are far below that. The practical limit on this page is the 95 MB upload size per file.
