85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the .jxl files
Drag them in or pick them from your device. Up to 20 files per batch, 95 MB each; lossy and lossless JPEG XL both work.
- 2
Pick quality and background
Quality starts at 90, a good match for the detail JPEG XL keeps. Transparent areas, if any, are filled with the color under Transparent areas (white by default).
- 3
Convert to JPG
Press Convert to JPG and download each file or a ZIP of the batch.
JPEG XL is a newer, smaller image format that Safari reads and Chrome does not. Converting to JPG trades some file size for a picture that opens everywhere.
What a .jxl file is and why it will not open
JPEG XL was designed by the JPEG committee as the successor to the 1992 JPEG format. It is published as ISO/IEC 18181, with the core coding system, Part 1, released in 2022. It handles lossy and lossless images, transparency, animation and HDR in one format, and it has a trick no other modern format offers: an existing JPEG can be repacked into JPEG XL losslessly, about 20% smaller, and unpacked back to the identical original.
Support is the catch. Google removed the experimental decoder from Chrome 110, so Chrome, Edge, Opera and most Android apps show a broken image or a download prompt. Apple went the other way and added JPEG XL to Safari 17, iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. Firefox has it only in Nightly builds behind a setting. The result is that a file saved on a Mac or iPhone, or exported from a raw editor set to JPEG XL, often fails the moment it is sent to someone on Windows or uploaded to a website.

JXL
JPEG XL
JPEG XL is a modern image format standardised as ISO/IEC 18181 in 2021–2022. It offers efficient lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, HDR and very high resolutions, and it can losslessly repack existing JPEG files about 20% smaller. Decoding is fast and progressive. Browser support is still incomplete, and many apps and websites cannot open JXL yet.

JPEG image
JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

JPEG XL files get turned back into JPG when they leave an Apple device or a photo app that writes JXL and land somewhere built on Chrome or an old upload form, neither of which can decode them.
JPEG XL vs JPG file size after converting
JPEG XL
1.6 MB
4032 × 3024 phone photo, lossy JXL
JPG
2.4 MB
same pixels, quality 90
Expect the JPG to be larger. JPEG XL needs fewer bytes for the same look, so the figures above are typical for a phone photo; a JXL that was itself made from a JPEG grows by roughly the 20% it saved. If the destination also has a size limit, convert first and compress afterwards rather than lowering Quality blindly.
Nothing else changes: width, height and orientation stay the same, the color profile is kept unless you turn Keep color profile off, and camera metadata is removed by default for privacy. Transparency is the one real loss, since JPG has no alpha channel. For the bigger picture on newer formats, see AVIF, HEIC and WebP explained.
JPEG XL to JPG questions
Why can't Chrome open my JXL file?
Chrome had JPEG XL decoding behind a flag from version 91 and removed it in version 110, released in early 2023, saying there was not enough interest. Edge, built on the same engine, does not open it either. Safari on macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 opens .jxl, which is how many people end up with these files.
Is a JXL made from a JPEG the same picture as the original JPG?
Yes, if it was made with lossless JPEG recompression. In that mode JPEG XL stores the original JPEG's data about 20% smaller, and the reference tool djxl can rebuild the exact original bytes. This converter decodes the pixels and writes a fresh JPG at the quality you choose, which looks the same but is not byte-identical.
Does JXL to JPG keep HDR and wide color?
Partly. JPG stores 8 bits per channel, so an HDR or 16-bit JPEG XL is tone-mapped down and loses headroom in the highlights. Wide-gamut colors survive when Keep color profile stays on; to keep the full bit depth, convert to JXL to PNG or TIFF instead.
What happens to an animated JPEG XL?
JPEG XL can hold animation, but a JPG cannot, so only the first frame is kept. Choose GIF output on the image converter if the motion matters.
Should I keep the JXL originals after converting?
If they are your own photos, yes. JPEG XL is the more efficient file, and support keeps growing outside Chrome. Convert copies for the places that refuse JXL and archive the originals.
