PNG to PSD Converter
Turn a PNG logo, screenshot or cut-out into a Photoshop document without losing its transparent background. The PSD holds one layer whose see-through areas stay see-through, so you can drop it straight onto other artwork.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the PNG files
Add up to 20 PNGs, 95 MB each. Transparent, semi-transparent and fully opaque images all work.
- 2
Leave color on Keep original
Color space stays on Keep original and Keep color profile is on, so a PNG tagged with Display P3 or Adobe RGB keeps that profile. You find both under Advanced settings.
- 3
Press Convert to PSD
Download each .psd or one ZIP. Files are removed from the server after 30 minutes.
Converting PNG to PSD keeps every pixel and the full alpha channel. What it cannot do is invent layers: the result is one transparent layer, which is exactly what most mockups and templates expect to receive.
How PNG transparency becomes a Photoshop layer
PNG was published in 1996 and became a W3C Recommendation the same year, designed as a patent-free replacement for GIF with a full 8-bit alpha channel. Each pixel carries an opacity value from 0 to 255, which is how a logo can have crisp outer edges and a soft drop shadow in the same file.
Photoshop stores transparency differently. A flattened Background layer cannot be transparent at all, while a regular layer keeps its own transparency mask. This converter writes the PNG's alpha into a regular layer, so opacity values carry over one to one. Open the PSD and you see the checkerboard where the PNG was empty, with no locked Background to unlock first.

Portable Network Graphics
PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

PSD
Adobe Photoshop Document
PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

PNG goes to PSD when transparent artwork has to enter a Photoshop-only workflow such as a mockup kit, template store or design handoff; PSD to PNG instead exports a finished layered design as one transparent image for the web.
Who needs a PNG as a PSD
The typical requests come from three places. Print-on-demand and merch services sometimes provide a PSD template and ask for the artwork back in the same format. Mockup marketplaces sell scenes with smart objects, and some automated mockup generators accept only a .psd for the design slot. And design agencies often keep every asset of a brand in PSD so their file servers and naming rules stay consistent. In each case the receiving side mostly cares about two things: the extension, and a transparent layer it can place on a shirt, a mug or a screen.
If you edit in a browser, Photopea treats PSD as its native format, so a converted file keeps working the same way across sessions. Once the design is done, export a web-ready copy with PSD to PNG. For photos without transparency, the JPG to PSD page sets things up for opaque images.
PNG to PSD size limits and dimensions
A PSD can be at most 30,000 × 30,000 px and 2 GB. PNG technically allows far larger canvases, so a very wide panorama or a stitched map could exceed the PSD limit; Photoshop's PSB Large Document Format exists for those, and you can shrink the image under Resize output image to stay inside PSD. Ordinary logos, icons and screenshots are thousands of pixels below the ceiling.
PNG to PSD questions
Is the transparent background of my PNG kept in the PSD?
Yes. The PNG's alpha channel becomes the transparency of the PSD layer, so empty areas show the checkerboard in Photoshop and soft edges such as shadows or anti-aliased lettering keep their partial opacity. No white or black fill is added.
Why does the PSD open as a single layer instead of separate parts?
A PNG is one flat image, even when it looks like a logo with an icon and text. The converter cannot know where one element ends and the next begins, so you get one layer. Use selection tools in your editor to cut parts onto layers of their own.
Can I use the converted PSD as a smart object in a mockup?
Yes. In Photoshop, open the mockup, double-click its smart object layer and place the PSD inside, or drag the layer across. Because the transparency is real alpha, the artwork sits on the mockup's surface without a white box around it.
Do I lose quality going from PNG to PSD?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is copied exactly. The PSD is often a little larger than the PNG, because PNG's compression is tuned for small files and PSD's is tuned for fast editing.
Will a 16-bit PNG stay 16-bit in the PSD?
The PSD is written as 8-bit RGB with alpha. That covers almost every PNG in practice, as screenshots, logos and web graphics are 8-bit. Photo restoration work saved as 16-bit PNG should be opened directly in Photoshop or GIMP instead.
