DNG to JPG Converter

DNG is Adobe's openly documented raw format, used by phones in Pro or RAW mode and by several camera makers. Convert it to JPG when the photo needs to be seen rather than edited.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the DNG files

AirDrop or copy them from the phone, or take them off the camera card. Twenty files at a time, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Decide about metadata

Location and camera details are removed by default. Untick Strip metadata under Advanced settings if you want the date and GPS to travel with the JPG.

  3. 3

    Press Convert to JPG

Each DNG becomes a full-resolution 8-bit JPG in sRGB, ready to share.

Answer

What is the fastest way to turn a DNG into a JPG?

Upload the DNG and press Convert to JPG. The raw data is developed at the white balance the camera recorded, mapped to sRGB and saved at quality 90.

DNG: the raw format that is not tied to one camera brand

Most raw formats belong to one manufacturer and change with each camera model, so an older editor may not open files from a newer body. Adobe published Digital Negative in 2004 as a documented, royalty-free alternative. Leica, Pentax, Ricoh and Hasselblad cameras write it natively, and Android phones gained DNG capture with the Camera2 API in Android 5.0.

Apple chose DNG for ProRAW on the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020. ProRAW goes further than a classic raw file: part of Apple's processing is already applied and the pixels are stored demosaiced, which is why those files open with more finished color than a DSLR raw. A 48-megapixel ProRAW photo is large, around 75 MB by Apple's estimate, but still inside the per-file limit here.

DNG

Digital Negative

DNG is an openly documented raw image format introduced by Adobe in 2004. It is based on TIFF and can store raw sensor data from any camera, along with metadata and an embedded preview, in either lossless or lossy compressed form. Some cameras and many smartphones, including iPhone ProRAW and Google Pixel, save DNG directly, and Lightroom can convert other raw formats to it for archiving. Plain viewers may only show the preview, and editing needs raw-capable software.

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

DNG to JPG is for raw photos that came from a phone's Pro mode or a camera that writes DNG natively, when the picture has to go into a chat, an email or a web form that only takes JPG.

Those extra levels are headroom. In an editor they let you lift shadows or pull back a bright window without banding. A finished photo on a screen needs only 256 levels per channel, so the JPG looks complete, but later changes have far less room. The white balance stops being a setting and becomes part of the pixels.

The practical rule: keep the DNG wherever you archive originals, and treat the JPG as the shareable print. If your phone shoots ordinary photos as HEIC rather than DNG, HEIC to JPG is the page for those.

DNG to JPG questions

Why did my phone save DNG files?

Because RAW or ProRAW capture was switched on. On iPhone it is a toggle under Settings, Camera, Formats on Pro models; on Android it is usually part of the Pro or Expert RAW mode. Turn it off if you only want regular photos, which take far less space.

Can I open a DNG without Lightroom?

Often yes: macOS Photos, Windows with the Raw Image Extension and many free viewers read DNG. Upload portals, messaging apps and most websites do not, which is why sharing needs a JPG.

Will ProRAW photos look the same as on my iPhone after converting?

Close, not identical. The Photos app renders ProRAW with Apple's own processing, while any other raw engine interprets the same data its own way, so contrast and color can differ a little. For an exact match, export from Photos.

Is a DNG made by Adobe DNG Converter treated differently?

No. Adobe's free converter rewraps Canon, Nikon or Sony raw data into DNG, and the result is developed exactly like a DNG straight from a camera.

How much smaller is the JPG than the DNG?

Typically several times smaller. A raw file keeps every photosite at 12 or 14 bits, while a JPG at quality 90 discards detail the eye does not notice. If a form needs it smaller still, use Compress image to 1 MB.

Should I convert DNG to PNG to avoid compression?

Only if the next step is lossless editing. DNG to PNG keeps 8-bit pixels exactly, but the files come out many times larger than JPG with no visible gain for viewing.
