Applies when both sides are set or the shape changes. Fit inside keeps everything and may come out smaller on one side; crop fills the frame exactly; pad adds borders; stretch distorts.
Which part of the image is kept when cropping. Smart keeps the busiest area, usually a face or the main subject.
Color of the borders added around the image, e.g. #FFFFFF for white.
Pixels per inch used to turn cm, mm or inches into pixels and written into the file. 300 is standard for print, 200 for most online forms.
Same as input keeps the original format. Pick GIF or WebP to keep an animation, PNG for transparency.
Applies to JPG, WebP and AVIF. 85 looks identical to the original for photos.
Quality is lowered until the resized file is at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the photos
Drop up to 20 images of up to 95 MB each: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP or TIFF.
- 2
Enter the new size
Under Resize by, keep Dimensions and type a Width, a Height or both, then choose px, cm, mm or in as Unit. Use Percentage to scale, or Aspect ratio to change the shape.
- 3
Resize and download
Press Resize. Check the new dimensions shown under each file and download them separately or as one ZIP.
Three ways to resize: dimensions, percentage, aspect ratio
Dimensions is the mode most people need. Type a width and leave the height at 0, and the height is calculated so the photo keeps its proportions; that is how a batch of mixed portrait and landscape shots all come out 1920 px wide. Fill in both sides only when the target has a fixed shape, such as a 600 × 600 px profile picture, and then Fit decides what happens to the parts that do not match.
Percentage scales both sides by the same factor from 1% to 400%. 50% halves width and height, which leaves a quarter of the pixels and usually cuts the file size by about as much. Anything above 100% enlarges, which is useful for a form with a minimum pixel size but cannot invent detail that was not captured.
Aspect ratio changes the shape without asking for numbers: 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 2:3, 9:16, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2 or 21:9. It is the quickest way to make a 16:9 image for a YouTube thumbnail or a 9:16 one for Stories, Reels and TikTok. For a free-hand selection of exactly which area to keep, the crop image tool is the better fit, and change aspect ratio is this resizer with the ratio mode preselected.

Resize image in cm or inches: the DPI math
| cm | Pixels at | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 150 DPI | 300 DPI | |
| 1 cm | 28 px | 59 px | 118 px |
| 2.5 cm | 71 px | 148 px | 295 px |
| 3.5 cm | 99 px | 207 px | 413 px |
| 4.5 cm | 128 px | 266 px | 531 px |
| 10 cm | 283 px | 591 px | 1181 px |
| 21 cm (A4 width) | 595 px | 1240 px | 2480 px |
A pixel has no physical size until you say how many fit in an inch. That is the job of the DPI field, which appears when Unit is cm, mm or in: pixels = inches × DPI, and one inch is 2.54 cm. At the default 300 DPI, the print standard, 1 cm becomes about 118 px. Many online forms that ask for centimeters accept 200 DPI, which gives smaller files for the same printed size. Resize image in cm starts with centimeters selected.
The remaining options shape the output. Output format keeps the original or switches to JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or GIF, and Quality (85 by default) applies to the lossy ones. Keep animation resizes every frame of an animated GIF or WebP instead of keeping only the first. Limit file size adds a KB or MB ceiling for forms that set both pixels and file size, the job behind the image resizer in pixels and KB. Auto orient and Strip metadata are on by default, so width and height match what you see and the GPS position is removed.
When both sides are set: fit, crop, pad or stretch
Fit inside
The default. The whole image fits within the box and keeps its proportions, so one side may come out smaller than you typed.
Crop to fill
Fills the box exactly and trims what sticks out. Crop position picks center, top, bottom, left, right or Smart, which follows the main subject.
Pad with color
Fills the box exactly and adds borders in Pad color. Nothing is cut off, which is the way to fit a landscape photo into a square post.
Stretch
Forces the exact size by distorting the picture. Only sensible for textures, gradients or images that are already almost the right shape.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Resize from the original photo, not from a copy that was already shrunk | Enlarge a 400 px photo to 2000 px and expect it to look sharp |
| Leave one side at 0 when you only care about width or height | Use Stretch on faces or text |
| Tick Never enlarge when a batch mixes small and large images | Type cm values with Unit still set to px |
| Use PNG output for screenshots with small text | Send a resized photo to print without checking the DPI |
Resizing questions
How do I resize a photo online for free without losing quality?
Reduce rather than enlarge where you can, keep Quality at 85 or higher, and leave Never enlarge ticked for batches. Downscaling a large photo to 1080 or 1920 px wide looks just as sharp on screen because displays show fewer pixels than the camera captured.
How do I resize an image for Instagram without cropping it?
Choose Aspect ratio, pick 4:5 or 1:1, and set Fit to Pad with color. The whole photo stays visible and bars in your chosen Pad color fill the gap. Instagram post size has 1080 × 1350 px, the tallest feed format, already filled in.
What does resizing image DPI change?
Only the relationship between pixels and print size. At 300 DPI, a 3.5 × 4.5 cm print needs 413 × 531 px; at 200 DPI the same size needs 276 × 354 px. The DPI field appears when the unit is cm, mm or in, and its value is also written into the file for printers and portals that read it.
Can I resize a signature to the size an exam form asks for?
Yes. Exam portals usually give a pixel size and a KB range, so enter the pixels as Width and Height, set Fit to Pad with color with white, and tick Limit file size with the maximum KB. For portals that also need a photo, the passport photo maker has SSC, IBPS and UPSC specs built in.
Will resizing a PNG keep its transparent background?
Yes, as long as Output format stays on Same as input, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Choosing JPG fills the transparent areas, since JPG cannot store them.
Can I make a 300 × 300 image from a rectangular photo?
Set Width and Height to 300 px and Fit to Crop to fill; Crop position decides which part stays, and Smart keeps the main subject. Resize image to 300×300 has those values filled in.
Does resizing also reduce the file size in KB?
Usually, because fewer pixels need fewer bytes; halving width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels. If a form sets a strict KB limit as well, tick Limit file size so quality is adjusted until the file fits.
Can I batch resize photos of different shapes to the same width?
Yes. Enter only the Width and leave Height at 0. Every image gets that width and a height calculated from its own proportions, so portrait and landscape photos are never squashed.
