AVIF to JPG Converter

AVIF is the newest image format browsers show you, and the one the rest of your software is least likely to open. Convert AVIF to JPG here and the picture works in editors, documents, email and forms again.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload .avif images

Add up to 20 AVIF files by dragging, browsing or pasting from the clipboard. Each may be up to 95 MB.

  2. 2

    Set the JPG quality

Quality 90 is preselected to avoid stacking a second round of visible compression on top of AVIF's. Transparent areas, if any, turn white; change that under Transparent areas in Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Convert to JPG

Press Convert to JPG, then download single files or one ZIP for the batch.

Browsers learned to show AVIF between 2020 and 2024; photo apps, office suites and upload forms mostly have not. Change AVIF to JPG once and stop guessing which program will open it.

Convert AVIF to JPG online, free and in batches

AVIF arrived on the web fast. Image services and content delivery networks check what a browser supports and quietly swap in AVIF when they can, because the AV1-based compression usually beats JPEG by a wide margin at the same visual quality. You never notice while browsing. You notice when you right-click a photo, save it, and find a .avif file that your image editor, Word document or job application form refuses.

Converting puts the picture back into the format everything reads. Dimensions stay the same, the orientation is applied, and colors are mapped to sRGB so they match what you saw in the browser. Batches of up to 20 files are converted together, so a folder of saved product shots or reference images takes one pass.

AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores still images and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec, and was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It usually produces smaller files than both JPEG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and HDR. Encoding is slower than older formats, and very fine textures can look smoothed at low quality settings. All major browsers now display AVIF, but many desktop apps, social platforms and older devices cannot open it.

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

AVIF reaches people as an image saved from a modern website, and most desktop software, office suites and upload forms still expect JPG; converting is a compatibility fix, never a size win.

Expect the JPG to be bigger than the AVIF, often two or three times. That is the price of compatibility, not a sign that something went wrong. If the destination has an upload cap, convert at 90 first and then use Compress image to 200 KB or a similar size target, which tunes the quality for you.

Animated AVIF files exist but are rare; only the first frame is converted to JPG by default. Transparent AVIFs such as logos are filled with white, or with the color you pick under Transparent areas.

AVIF to JPG questions

What is an AVIF file and why did my browser save one?

AVIF stores a still image compressed with the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Image CDNs and large sites increasingly send AVIF to browsers that announce support, because it is often noticeably smaller than WebP or JPEG. When you save the image, you get exactly what was sent.

Is this AVIF to JPG converter free to use?

Yes, with no account and no watermark. The limits are 20 files per batch and 95 MB per file, and uploads and results are deleted after 30 minutes; how it works has the details.

Why use quality 90 instead of 85 for AVIF?

Web AVIF images are usually encoded aggressively, so they already carry some smoothing. A JPG at 90 adds very little on top, while lower settings can start to show JPEG's blocky artifacts in skies and skin. Drop to 80 only when the file has to be small.

Can Windows open AVIF without converting?

Windows 10 (version 1903 and later) and Windows 11 can display AVIF in the Photos app once the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed. Many other desktop programs and older editors still cannot, which is where converting helps.

What about HDR or 10-bit AVIF images?

AVIF can hold 10- and 12-bit color and HDR, JPG cannot. The converter maps the image into standard 8-bit sRGB so it looks right on ordinary screens; very bright HDR highlights are compressed into that range.

Should I convert AVIF to PNG instead?

Choose AVIF to PNG when the image has transparency you want to keep or you plan to edit it heavily. For photos you only need to view, share or upload, JPG is smaller and more widely accepted.
