JPG to PNG Converter

Turning a JPG into a PNG freezes the picture exactly as it is, so no further quality is lost each time you edit and save. It is the step to take before retouching, making icons or meeting a PNG-only upload rule.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Choose your JPG or JPEG files

Drop up to 20 images into the uploader, with a 95 MB ceiling per file. Files ending in .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif all work.

  2. 2

    Decide on metadata and size

This page keeps the photo's metadata, such as date taken and camera model. Tick Strip metadata under Advanced settings to remove it, or use Resize output image to keep the PNG lighter.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG. Download each image or save the whole batch in a single ZIP.

Why convert JPG to PNG before editing

Every time a JPG is opened, changed and saved again, the encoder throws away a little more detail. One save is invisible; ten saves of the same photo while you crop, retouch and adjust colors start to show blotchy skies and fuzzy edges. This is called generation loss, and the fix is to work on a lossless copy and export a JPG only at the very end.

PNG is the most widely supported lossless format for that working copy. Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, Canva, PowerPoint and every browser open it, and it keeps 8 bits per channel for ordinary images or 16 bits for high-precision work.

The other common reason is a rule you do not control: an upload form, app store or plugin that lists PNG and nothing else. In that case the conversion simply relabels your image in an accepted format without changing how it looks.

Convert JPG to PNG transparent: common misunderstandings

MythSaving as PNG makes the white background transparent.

FactThe PNG gets an alpha channel, but every pixel in it is fully opaque because the JPG never had transparency. You remove the background in an editor afterwards.

MythPNG is higher quality, so the converted image looks better.

FactThe PNG reproduces the JPG pixel for pixel, artifacts included. Quality can only stay the same or go down, never up.

MythA bigger file means more detail was recovered.

FactThe extra size is the cost of storing every pixel exactly. No detail is added.

MythPNG is always better for printing.

FactPrint labs accept high-quality JPG without trouble. PNG helps when you will keep editing, not at the print counter.

Why the PNG comes out bigger than the JPG

3–10×typical size increase when a camera photo is saved as PNG

Flat graphics, diagrams and screenshots grow far less, sometimes not at all. Use Resize output image if you only need a smaller version.

JPG

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

People convert JPG to PNG to stop further quality loss while editing, or because an app store, icon field or design platform accepts PNG only; it is about a lossless working copy, not a smaller file.

PNG compression, defined when the format was created in 1996, looks for repeated byte patterns and stores them once. A logo with three flat colors repeats constantly and packs tightly. A photo has grain, noise and gradients, and JPG's leftover block patterns on top of that, so there is little to repeat and the file balloons. Halving the width and height cuts the pixel count to a quarter.

If your goal is the smallest possible file, PNG is the wrong destination. Keep the JPG, or see the guide to JPG, JPEG and PNG for choosing between them.

JPG to PNG FAQ

Can I convert JPG to PNG with a transparent background?

Converting changes the container, not the picture: a JPG has no transparency, so the PNG you get has a solid background exactly like the original. To make the background see-through you need to select and delete it in an editor such as Photoshop, GIMP or Photopea after converting; the PNG then stores that transparency correctly.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?

JPG discards fine detail the eye barely notices; PNG stores every pixel exactly and compresses only what repeats. A camera photo has very little exact repetition, so the PNG is typically 3 to 10 times larger. Simple graphics with flat colors grow much less.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

It does not remove existing JPG artifacts such as blockiness or color fringing. It only guarantees that no new loss is added from this point on, which is what you want for a file you plan to edit several times.

When is a PNG required instead of a JPG?

App icons for the Apple App Store and Google Play, many favicon and logo upload fields, sprite sheets for games and some e-signature tools ask for PNG. Several stock and print-on-demand sites also want PNG for designs printed on light and dark products.

Is JPEG to PNG any different from JPG to PNG?

No. JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings of the extension, and both upload here. JPEG to PNG is the same conversion for people who search with the four-letter spelling.

Can I make an icon from the PNG?

Yes. Convert to PNG first if you want to retouch the image, then turn it into a multi-size Windows icon with PNG to ICO, which packs 16 to 256 px versions into one file.
