HEIC to JPEG Converter

When a portal says JPEG only and your phone saved HEIC, convert the photo here and upload a real JPEG. The picture keeps its full resolution and colors and comes out upright.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the HEIC photos

Send the .heic files from your phone or computer. Twenty fit in one batch, each up to 95 MB.

  2. 2

    Check quality for the portal

JPEG quality is 85, which looks identical to the HEIC. If the portal caps the file at a few hundred KB, set a smaller size under Resize output image in Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Download and upload

Press Convert to JPG; the result is a standard JPEG file. Upload it to the portal. Our copies are deleted after 30 minutes.

A form that asks for JPEG wants the format, not the four-letter extension: a HEIC converted here passes as JPEG whether the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg.

HEIC to JPEG for portals that say JPEG only

Visa applications, university admissions, exam boards and HR onboarding systems usually describe their photo rule in one line: JPEG format, a pixel range and a maximum size. An iPhone photo fails the first condition before anything else is checked, because the file is HEIC, a container Apple adopted at WWDC in 2017 and made the camera default in iOS 11 that autumn.

The rejection message rarely helps. Some portals say the file type is invalid, some say the photo could not be read, and some simply leave the preview blank. All of them mean the same thing: convert to JPEG. Desktop users with a whole camera roll to fix can start from bulk HEIC to JPG instead of uploading twenty files at a time by hand.

HEIC

High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is the HEIF image container (an MPEG standard from 2015) holding pictures compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad in 2017 because it stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG with similar quality. It can hold depth data, Live Photo sequences, transparency and 10-bit colour. Support outside the Apple ecosystem is patchy: many Windows PCs, web browsers, websites and online forms cannot open HEIC without extra codecs.

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

HEIC to JPEG is the request of people facing a portal or document template that names JPEG as the only accepted type; it is a format requirement, not a viewing problem, and nobody needs JPEG turned back into HEIC except to save phone storage.

JPEG, JPG and HEIC: what the names mean

JPEGJPG · image/jpeg · ISO/IEC 10918-1
A lossy image format from the Joint Photographic Experts Group. When a form asks for JPEG it means this compression method and file structure, which may sit in a file named .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe or .jfif. HEIC is a different container with a different codec, so renaming a .heic file to .jpeg does not make it one.

Why the HEIC is half the size of the JPEG

HEVC was built to compress 4K video, and a HEIC photo is in effect a single compressed video frame. It predicts blocks of the image from their neighbors and codes only the difference, with block sizes up to 64 × 64 pixels, while JPEG works on fixed 8 × 8 blocks with a design from the early 1990s. Apple quoted files up to half the size when it introduced the format, and in practice a JPEG of the same photo usually comes out roughly twice as large.

That growth is the price of acceptance. The JPEG is decoded from the HEIC once and encoded at quality 85, so the photo looks the same at any normal viewing size. Things that live beside the main image in the HEIC container, such as the depth map of a Portrait shot or the motion part of a Live Photo, are not part of a JPEG and are left behind. If you need a lossless copy for editing rather than a portal upload, use HEIC to PNG.

HEIC to JPEG questions

Do I need the file to end in .jpeg when a form says JPEG?

No. JPEG is the format and .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of its extension. A portal that says JPEG accepts both; only a badly written validator insists on one, and then renaming the extension of a real JPEG is harmless.

Why does my Android phone open HEIC but the upload form does not?

Android has decoded HEIF images since version 9 Pie in 2018, so the gallery shows them. The web form, however, checks the file type against its own list, and that list usually stops at JPEG and PNG.

Can an iPhone convert HEIC to JPEG by itself?

Partly. iOS converts to JPEG automatically when you share through Mail or to an app that does not declare HEIC support, but saving to Files or AirDropping to a Mac usually keeps the HEIC. Converting here gives you a predictable JPEG every time.

How much bigger is the JPEG than the original HEIC?

Usually about twice the size at the same visual quality. A 2 MB HEIC from a 12 MP iPhone typically becomes a JPEG of 3 to 4.5 MB at quality 85. Resize it if a portal has a small KB limit.

What JPEG quality is right for an iPhone photo going to a portal?

85 is right for most cases and is the default here. Go up to 90 for prints. Going below 70 to meet a size limit softens faces, so reduce the pixel dimensions first.
