PSD to PNG Converter

A PSD is a working file full of layers; a PNG is the finished picture with its transparency intact. Convert when a developer, a client or a website needs the image and not the Photoshop project.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PSD files

Up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each. Files saved with Photoshop's default compatibility setting convert most reliably.

  2. 2

    Check the color settings

Color space is sRGB, which suits screens and the web. CMYK print documents are converted to RGB, since PNG has no CMYK mode.

  3. 3

    Press Convert to PNG

You get one flattened PNG per PSD, transparent where the document had no pixels.

Answer

How do I convert PSD to PNG and keep transparency?

Upload the PSD and press Convert to PNG. Visible layers are merged as Photoshop displays them, and every transparent area stays transparent in the PNG.

PSD to PNG: one flattened image, transparency kept

Photoshop 1.0 introduced the PSD format in 1990, and it has grown with every release: layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, layer styles and editable text. A PSD can reach 30,000 × 30,000 pixels and 2 GB; anything larger goes into the PSB Large Document Format.

PNG can hold none of that structure. It stores one grid of pixels with an alpha channel, which is all a browser, a slide or an app interface needs. The conversion therefore takes the composite: the image as it appears in Photoshop with the current layer visibility, effects rendered in place. Drop shadows, glows and blend modes look the same; they simply cannot be edited any more.

PSD

Adobe Photoshop Document

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

PNG converter

People convert PSD to PNG to hand over a finished design with its transparent areas intact to someone who has no Photoshop, such as a developer building a page or a client approving a mockup.

What survives the conversion and what does not

Carried into the PNG

  • Full pixel dimensions
  • Transparency with soft edges
  • Layer styles as rendered
  • Blend modes and opacity as rendered
  • Colors, mapped to sRGB

Left behind in the PSD

  • Separate, editable layers
  • Live text and fonts
  • Smart objects and filters
  • Hidden layers and layer comps
  • CMYK color mode

Keep the PSD as the source you return to; the PNG is an export, like the one Photoshop's own Export As or Quick Export as PNG would give you. If the design changes, edit the PSD and convert again rather than painting over the PNG.

Flattened PNGs from large artboards can be heavy. For a website, run the result through PNG to WebP, which keeps transparency at a fraction of the size. For print or a client review with several pages, PSD to PDF is a better container.

PSD to PNG FAQ

Will my PSD's transparent background stay transparent in the PNG?

Yes. Areas with no visible pixels in the document become transparent pixels in the PNG, including the soft edges of feathered selections and shadows. Only a filled Background layer would turn them solid.

Why is my converted PSD blank or different from what I see in Photoshop?

Photoshop stores a flattened preview inside the PSD only when Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility is on. Without it, other programs have to rebuild the layers themselves and may miss effects. Re-save the PSD with the option set to Always.

Are hidden layers included in the PNG?

No. The PNG shows what the document shows with its current layer visibility. Turn on the layers you need, or off the ones you do not, and save before converting.

Can I export each layer as a separate PNG?

Not here, since one PSD becomes one image. In Photoshop, File, Export, Layers to Files writes every layer as its own PNG; the flattened version from this page is what you need for most handoffs.

Do I need Photoshop to convert PSD to PNG?

No. UltKit reads the PSD itself, so you can convert a PSD a designer sent you on a laptop or phone without Adobe software installed.

Is PNG or JPG better for a PSD?

PNG for logos, UI and anything with transparency or sharp text. For photographic designs going into email or slides, PSD to JPG gives a much smaller file.
