How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add your photos

Drop in pictures from a phone, a camera card or a scanner folder: HEIC, RAW, PNG, TIFF and more. Up to 20 at a time, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Keep quality at 85

Quality 85 looks the same as the original at normal size. Lower it only for a strict size cap; Auto orient and Strip metadata are already on under Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Get the JPGs

Press Convert to JPG and download each photo or one ZIP. The server removes uploads and results after 30 minutes.

Turn any photo into a JPG a portal accepts

A photo is not one format. iPhones have saved HEIC since iOS 11, Samsung Galaxy cameras offer a High efficiency pictures switch that does the same with HEIF, mirrorless cameras write RAW files such as Canon's CR3 (introduced in 2018), scanners default to TIFF or PNG, and screenshots are PNG. Your gallery shows them all the same way, so it is easy to miss that the file you picked for a form is not a JPG at all.

Upload portals do notice. Government, exam and job sites usually list JPG or JPEG as the only type and often add pixel and KB limits on top. The US Department of State's online passport renewal, for instance, takes a JPEG photo between 54 KB and 10 MB. Converting to JPG solves the type problem; the size rules are a second step covered further down.

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

Photos arrive in whatever format the device chose, from HEIC and camera RAW to scanner TIFF and PNG screenshots, and nearly every upload form, print kiosk and older PC expects one thing: JPG.

What happens to a photo on the way to JPG

  1. Decode

HEIC, RAW, PNG or TIFF is opened at full resolution, including high bit depth sources.

  2. Normalize

The photo is turned upright, converted to sRGB and stripped of GPS and camera data.

  3. Encode

A standard JPG is written at quality 85, readable by every viewer and portal.

Photo to JPG for forms with KB and pixel limits

A 12 MP phone photo saved as JPG at quality 85 typically weighs 2 to 4 MB, which is far above what most application forms allow. Do not solve that by dragging Quality down to 30; the face turns blotchy long before the file is small. Shrink the pixels instead. Under Advanced settings, Resize output image with Set longest side at 1200 px usually brings a photo down to a few hundred KB at quality 85.

For a hard ceiling such as 50 KB or 20 KB, convert here first and then use a size target, which tunes quality and dimensions together until the file fits. Exam portals in India often combine a KB range with a pixel size; UPSC photo resize is set up for that kind of rule. Exif metadata, standardized in Japan in 1995, is removed by default, which keeps your home location off a public portal and saves a few kilobytes as well. The passport size photo guide converts common photo sizes between centimeters, inches and pixels.

Photo to JPG questions

My photo already looks like a JPG. Why does the form reject it?

The picture may be a HEIC, a PNG or a camera RAW file that your gallery displays without showing the type. Forms check the actual file type, so convert it and upload the file that ends in .jpg.

Can I convert a camera RAW photo to JPG here?

Yes. CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, RAF, ORF, PEF and RW2 files are read and developed with neutral default settings. For careful color work, edit the RAW in your own software first and export from there.

Why was my photo sideways after uploading it somewhere else?

Phones often store a photo unrotated and add a flag saying which way is up. Some portals ignore the flag. Auto orient rotates the pixels themselves, so the JPG stands upright everywhere.

Does a JPG of a scanned document stay readable?

At quality 85 or higher, printed text and signatures stay crisp at normal zoom. For pages with fine print that you will enlarge, a PNG or a PDF keeps the edges cleaner.

Which photo to JPG settings suit an exam or job portal?

Keep quality at 85 and Color space at sRGB, then check the portal's pixel and KB rules. If the result is over the limit, use one of the size targets below, such as compress to 50 KB.
