Upload the archive

Keep Individual files to browse and save them one by one, or choose One ZIP. Folder layout, hidden files, nested archives and name encoding are under Advanced settings.

Unzip and save
Press Unzip and download what you need. The archive and the extracted files are deleted from the server 30 minutes after processing.
To extract a ZIP file online, upload it, enter the password if it has one, and press Unzip; the files appear as a list you can save one by one or as a fresh ZIP.

ZIP is the format everything understands, but downloads often arrive in others. RAR is a proprietary format from RARLAB, the maker of WinRAR; its source for extraction is public, so readers like this one can open it, while creating RAR needs RARLAB's own software. 7z comes from the open-source 7-Zip and uses LZMA compression. TAR, GZ, BZ2 and XZ are the Unix family, usually stacked as .tar.gz or .tar.xz, and ISO is a disk image of a CD, DVD or installer. CAB is Microsoft's cabinet format used in Windows updates and drivers.
Windows 11 learned to open RAR, 7z and TAR natively only in a 2023 update, and macOS Archive Utility still opens ZIP but not RAR. When you just need the files, unzipping here avoids installing anything. If you would rather keep an archive but in a friendlier format, open RAR online and RAR to ZIP handle that, and 7z to ZIP does the same for 7-Zip files.

Garbled file names after unzipping

- The character set used to store the names of the files inside a ZIP. Old ZIP tools wrote names in the computer's local code page, such as CP437 in the US or Shift_JIS in Japan; a flag for UTF-8 names was added to the ZIP specification only in 2006.
When an archive made on an older Windows PC in Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Russian is opened elsewhere, the names can appear as strings of symbols even though the files themselves are fine. File name encoding fixes that: Auto-detect handles almost every archive, and you can force UTF-8, DOS / Western (CP437), Cyrillic (CP866), Japanese (Shift_JIS), Chinese (GBK) or Korean (EUC-KR). Try the language the archive's creator used, then unzip again.

- Folder layout
- Keep folders preserves the archive's tree; Flatten folders lists every file at one level when you only want the files.
- Skip hidden system files
- On by default; leaves out __MACOSX, .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and desktop.ini clutter.
- Same file names
- When flattening creates duplicate names: rename with a number, keep the last one, or keep the first one.
When an archive will not extract
Wrong password, or the password prompt keeps returning
Passwords are case-sensitive and include spaces. Copy it from the message you received rather than typing it, and check that no line break was copied along.
Unexpected end of archive
The download was interrupted, so the file is incomplete. Download it again and compare the size with the original.
Only part of the files appear
It may be a multi-part archive. Find the remaining parts, such as .z01 or part2.rar, and extract them together in one batch with the archive converter set to Extract files.
The archive is larger than 95 MB
Ask the sender to split it into parts under 95 MB each and extract those in one batch, or open it with a desktop app such as 7-Zip, which has no size cap.
Unzipping questions
How do I extract a ZIP file on a Chromebook or a work computer where I cannot install apps?
Open this page in the browser, upload the ZIP and save the files you need from the list. Nothing has to be installed, which also helps on shared or locked-down machines. ChromeOS can open ZIPs in its Files app too, but not RAR or 7z.
How do I unzip a 7z file online?
Upload the .7z file exactly like a ZIP and press Unzip. If it was created with hidden file names, its contents cannot even be listed until you enter the Archive password, because the names are encrypted along with the data.
Can I extract only one file from a large archive?
Yes. With Get the files as set to Individual files, the result is a list, and you download only the entries you want. The rest are deleted with the archive after 30 minutes.
What happens when the archive contains other ZIP files?
By default they are listed as files. Turn on Extract archives inside to unpack ZIP, RAR or 7z archives found one level deep, which is common with downloaded course material and photo exports.
Can I open part2.rar or file.zip.002 on its own?
No. A split archive is one file cut into pieces, and only the first part holds the beginning of the data. This page opens every uploaded archive on its own, so upload all parts together in the archive converter, which accepts up to 20 files per batch, and choose Extract files. Files that span a missing part cannot be recovered by any tool.
Can this open an Android APK or a Java JAR file?
Yes, both are ZIP archives inside, so extracting shows their contents: the manifest, resources and compiled code. That is useful for checking an app's icons or a library's version, but extracting does not make the code readable or installable.
Is there a free zip file opener for iPhone without an app?
The Files app is one: tap a ZIP and iOS unpacks it into a folder next to it. For RAR or 7z, which Files cannot open, upload the archive here from Safari and save the extracted files back to Files.
