AVIF to GIF Converter

Turn an AVIF picture or clip saved from a modern website into a GIF that plays in email clients, old forums and GIF-only upload slots. Animated AVIFs keep their frames; stills become single-frame GIFs.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Drop in the AVIF files

Add up to 20 .avif files, still or animated, up to 95 MB each.

  2. 2

Shrink the width if the GIF must be small

Open Advanced settings, choose Set width under Resize output image and enter a pixel width.

  3. 3

    Convert and save

Press Convert to GIF. Download each GIF or one ZIP; uploads are erased after 30 minutes.

An AVIF is usually something you saved from a website, not something you made. Sites serve it because it is tiny, but the places where you want to share it, such as an email, a forum post or a chat app's GIF slot, mostly know GIF and nothing newer. Converting trades size for reach.

AVIF to GIF for places that accept only GIF

AVIF was published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019 and stores pictures with the same AV1 coding that streaming services use for video. Browsers handle it well: Chrome added still AVIF in version 85, Firefox turned it on by default in version 93, and Safari followed in version 16. Outside the browser the picture is different. Desktop mail clients, many forum engines and most "upload a GIF" fields check for the GIF signature and reject everything else.

GIF dates from CompuServe in 1987, and the 1989 revision, GIF89a, added the frame delays and transparency that made animated stickers possible. The AVIF is better in every technical way, but the GIF is the one that will play everywhere.

AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores still images and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec, and was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It usually produces smaller files than both JPEG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and HDR. Encoding is slower than older formats, and very fine textures can look smoothed at low quality settings. All major browsers now display AVIF, but many desktop apps, social platforms and older devices cannot open it.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

AVIF is converted to GIF when a short clip or sticker saved from a fast website has to play somewhere that only understands GIF, such as a mail client or a forum signature; GIF to AVIF goes the other way, to make the same animation light enough for a web page.

What happens to colors, alpha and frames when AVIF becomes GIF

  1. Decode AV1 frames

Each AVIF frame is decoded to full color, including 10-bit and HDR data where present.

  2. Build a 256-color palette

Every frame is reduced to at most 256 colors; alpha below the cut-off becomes the one transparent index.

  3. Write GIF89a frames

Frames are LZW-compressed with their delays in hundredths of a second and the loop count.

The palette step is where the visible change happens. Flat stickers, cartoons and screen recordings with a handful of colors come through almost untouched. Photographic clips with gradients lose the most, because 256 colors cannot cover a sunset or a blurred background without dots or steps.

If the AVIF is HDR, the bright highlights are mapped down to ordinary range first, since GIF has no notion of brightness beyond plain 8-bit color.

Keeping an AVIF to GIF conversion under upload limits

Width is the strongest lever. Halving a 960 px clip to 480 px cuts the pixel count to a quarter, and the GIF shrinks roughly in step. Set it under Resize output image in Advanced settings before you press Convert to GIF. A reaction GIF in a chat looks fine at 320 to 480 px.

When the destination can play video after all, a muted MP4 is far smaller than any GIF; GIF to MP4 handles that step. For a still that only needs to open in an editor, AVIF to JPG produces a much lighter file than a one-frame GIF. The background on why sites switched to AVIF is in AVIF, HEIC and WebP explained.

AVIF to GIF converter FAQ

Does an animated AVIF stay animated as a GIF?

Yes. Each frame of the AVIF sequence is written as a GIF frame with its display time, and the loop setting is carried over. Only a still AVIF becomes a one-frame GIF.

Why does my AVIF to GIF result look grainy?

GIF can show only 256 colors in each frame, while an AVIF frame can hold millions at 10 bits per channel. Smooth skies and skin tones are rebuilt from a small palette, which shows up as a fine dot pattern or as visible bands.

What happens to the soft shadow under a transparent AVIF sticker?

GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, with no partial opacity. Half-transparent pixels in a shadow or anti-aliased edge are either kept as solid color or dropped, so edges can look stepped against a dark page. For a clean cut-out, AVIF to PNG keeps the full alpha channel.

Can Outlook play the GIF I made from an AVIF?

Outlook for Windows from 2007 through 2019 shows only the first frame of an animated GIF, so put the important message in frame one. None of the common desktop mail clients display AVIF at all, which is why the conversion is needed.

Is the GIF going to be bigger than the AVIF?

Almost always, and often by several times. AVIF uses AV1 video coding with motion prediction, while GIF compresses each frame on its own with the LZW method from the 1980s.

My clip plays faster or slower after converting. Why?

GIF stores frame times in hundredths of a second, so a 33 ms AVIF frame has to round to 30 or 40 ms. Many browsers also treat delays below 20 ms as 100 ms, which makes very fast clips crawl.
