A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.

Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.

How to use this tool
- 1
Upload a picture
PNG, JPG, HEIC, WebP, GIF, SVG and dozens of other image types work. Square pictures give the cleanest icon.
- 2
Leave Icon sizes on All
Icon sizes set to All writes 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 px versions into one file. Pick a single size only if a program asks for exactly that.
- 3
Press Convert to ICO
Download the .ico and drop it where it is needed, such as the root of a website or a shortcut's icon setting.
How do I turn an image into an ICO file?
Upload the picture, keep Icon sizes on All and press Convert to ICO. You get one .ico holding 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 px versions, with transparent areas kept if the source has them.
IMG to ICO: turn any picture into an icon file
"IMG" in a search usually just means image: a logo someone emailed, a screenshot, a photo of a pet, a graphic saved from a design tool. The ICO side is specific. Windows uses .ico for program and shortcut icons, and browsers still request /favicon.ico from the root of every site unless a page points them elsewhere. Both expect several square bitmaps packed into one file, which a plain picture is not.
The converter accepts almost every image type in one place, so you do not need to know what you have. Upload it, and the picture is resized into each icon size and packed into a single ICO.

ICO
Windows icon
ICO is the Microsoft icon format used for Windows program icons and website favicons. One .ico file can contain several images at different sizes, such as 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and 256×256 pixels, so the system can pick the best fit. Each image can be stored as a bitmap or as PNG data and supports full alpha transparency. ICO is not meant for photos or large artwork. Browsers, Windows and most icon editors can read it.

People search for img to ico when they have some picture, of whatever type, and a website, a theme or a Windows shortcut asks for an .ico file; the source format matters less to them than getting a working icon quickly.

What makes a picture work as an icon
- Square framing, or the icon gets squeezed or padded.
- A source of at least 256 × 256 px for the largest size.
- One bold shape or letter rather than a whole scene.
- Transparent corners from a PNG, WebP or SVG for rounded logos.
- Strong contrast, since 16 px icons sit on light and dark tabs.
- No fine text; it turns to gray noise below 48 px.
Icons with 32-bit color and a full alpha channel arrived with Windows XP in 2001, which is why a modern ICO can have soft, anti-aliased edges against any background. To use that, start from a picture whose background is already transparent. A JPG cannot provide it, so a logo on a white square stays a white square; remove the background first or use a PNG version of the logo, then see PNG to ICO for the details of that path.
If the picture is not square, crop it before converting with the crop image tool; our guide on cropping an image to a ratio shows how to center the subject in a 1:1 frame.
Image to ICO questions
What does "img" mean in img to ico?
It is shorthand for image, any picture file. People type it when they do not know or care which format their picture is in. This converter takes nearly all of them, so a PNG, a JPG or an iPhone HEIC go through the same way.
Can I convert a .img disk image file to ICO?
No. Files ending in .img are usually disk or firmware images, such as a backup of a USB stick or an Android system partition, not pictures. They contain file systems rather than pixels, and an image converter cannot read them.
Will the corners of my rounded logo stay transparent?
Yes, if the source has an alpha channel. PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG files with clear corners keep them in every size of the ICO. A JPG has no transparency, so whatever color fills its corners stays visible.
Should I choose Icon sizes All or a single size?
All, in almost every case. Windows and browsers pick the stored size closest to what they draw, and a missing size is scaled from another, which blurs. A single size suits only tools that demand, for example, exactly 32 × 32 px.
Can I make an ICO from a picture on my phone?
Yes. Open this page on the phone, pick the picture from the gallery, including HEIC photos from an iPhone, and download the .ico. The file is then ready to upload to a website builder or send to a computer.
Why does my photo look like a blur at 16 px?
A 16 × 16 icon has 256 pixels in total, so a detailed photo cannot survive. Crop tightly to one recognizable element, such as a face or a single letter, before converting.
