How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the .avif files

Drop them on the upload area or pick them from your device; images saved from a browser usually sit in Downloads. Up to 20 files, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Leave PNG selected

Convert to is already set to PNG. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider; open Advanced settings only to resize or change metadata options.

  3. 3

    Convert and save

Press Convert to PNG and download each file, or one ZIP for a batch. Files are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

Can an AVIF become a PNG without losing its transparent background?

Yes. PNG stores a full alpha channel just as AVIF does, so logos, stickers and cut-outs keep their see-through areas and soft edges. The pixels are written losslessly; the only real change is a bigger file.

Convert .avif to PNG and keep transparency

AVIF files usually arrive by accident. Image CDNs and modern site builders send AVIF to any browser that supports it, so a cut-out or illustration you save from a page lands in Downloads as .avif, even though the owner uploaded a PNG. The format is the still-image side of AV1, the royalty-free video codec the Alliance for Open Media finished in 2018; the AVIF specification reached version 1.0 in February 2019.

The trouble starts when you try to use the file. Many editing, office and print tools list PNG, JPG and perhaps WebP in their import dialogs, but not AVIF, and older installs answer with an unsupported-format message. PNG is the safest target when the image has transparent areas, because it is the universally supported format with a full alpha channel. If the picture is a plain photo with nothing transparent, AVIF to JPG gives a far smaller file.

AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores still images and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec, and was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It usually produces smaller files than both JPEG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and HDR. Encoding is slower than older formats, and very fine textures can look smoothed at low quality settings. All major browsers now display AVIF, but many desktop apps, social platforms and older devices cannot open it.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

AVIF files reach people as cut-outs and graphics saved from fast websites, and PNG is the one format every editor and slide app accepts with the alpha channel intact; the trip back to AVIF is only for publishing.

Which apps read AVIF, and which need a PNG

Reads AVIF

Browsers and system viewers

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF. Windows 11 Photos opens it once the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed, and GIMP has handled AVIF since version 2.10.22 (2020).

  • Good for looking at the file
  • Not where the image gets placed or edited
Best for: Viewing
Needs PNG

Editors, decks and design tools

Older Photoshop and Office installs, many print-on-demand uploaders and most template editors expect PNG for transparent artwork.

  • Keeps the cut-out clean on any color
  • No quality setting to get wrong
Best for: Logos, stickers, product cut-outs
Needs JPG

Photo forms and print kiosks

Upload portals and photo labs usually want JPG and often cap the file size.

  • Much smaller than PNG
  • No transparency at all
Best for: Photos without see-through areas

AVIF to PNG file size: why the PNG is several times larger

AVIF compresses with the tools of a video codec: it predicts each block from its neighbors and discards detail the eye is unlikely to miss. PNG does neither. It stores every decoded pixel exactly, using the same Deflate compression found in ZIP files, so a photograph that was around 80 KB as AVIF typically becomes somewhere between 600 KB and 1.5 MB as PNG at the same dimensions. Graphics with large flat areas and a transparent background grow far less, because Deflate handles flat color well.

Converting does not bring back detail the AVIF encoder threw away; the PNG is an exact copy of what the AVIF showed. That is still the right trade before editing, since every later PNG save is lossless. When size matters at the end, export the finished design to WebP or run it through compress image.

Netflix was among the first large companies to publish AVIF test results, in 2020, for the artwork on its interface. AVIF is built for delivery; keep the PNG as your working file and let the website create AVIF again later.

AVIF to PNG: common questions

Why did a website give me an .avif when the image looked like a PNG?

The site's image service chose AVIF because your browser said it could display it. The owner probably uploaded a PNG or JPG, but you only receive the version that was served. Converting gives you a PNG again, rebuilt from the AVIF.

Is AVIF to PNG lossless?

The PNG step is: every pixel the AVIF decodes to is stored exactly. If the AVIF itself was saved with lossy compression, that earlier loss stays, so the PNG looks identical to the AVIF but not sharper.

Will a soft drop shadow survive the conversion?

Yes. PNG stores 256 levels of opacity per pixel, so shadows, glows and anti-aliased edges look the same on any background. Only formats without an alpha channel, such as JPG or BMP, flatten them onto a solid color.

Can I make the PNG smaller while converting?

Use Resize output image under Advanced settings to set a width or a percentage; fewer pixels is the main lever for a PNG. For a hard KB limit, pick WebP, which keeps transparency at a fraction of the size.

Does the PNG keep the AVIF's color profile?

Keep color profile is on by default, so an embedded ICC profile travels into the PNG. Colors are converted to sRGB by default; choose Keep original under Color space for a print workflow.
