Merge Images

Join several pictures into one: two photos side by side for a before-and-after, screenshots stacked into one long image, or a neat grid of up to 20 photos. The tool lines up the sizes for you and lets you add spacing, a background and rounded corners.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the images

Upload 2 to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP or TIFF files, up to 95 MB each. Drag the thumbnails into the order you want.

  2. 2

    Choose the layout

Under Arrange, pick Side by side, Stacked or Grid, set Columns for a grid, and add a Gap in pixels if you want space between the pictures.

  3. 3

    Merge and download

Press Merge and download the single combined image, or a PDF if you chose that format. Files are removed from the server 30 minutes later.

Merging sounds like one action, but the result depends on two decisions: which way the images run, and what happens when they are different sizes.

How to combine images online

Photos from different sources rarely share a size. A phone photo might be 4032 × 3024 px, a screenshot 1170 × 2532 px, a downloaded image 800 × 600 px. Placed next to each other untouched, they would form a ragged shape. Match sizes on Auto fixes that: side by side, every image gets the same height; stacked, the same width; in a grid, the same cell. Smallest scales everything down to the smallest image so nothing is enlarged, Largest scales up to the biggest, and Keep original leaves sizes alone and fills the space with the background.

Order comes from Order: the order you added the files (and dragged them into), alphabetical by file name, or by the date each photo was taken. Name files 01, 02, 03 or sort by date when merging a sequence of steps or a day's photos, so the result reads correctly without dragging.

Animated GIFs and multi-page TIFFs are merged as still images using their first frame or page. HEIC and AVIF photos from a phone are read directly, so iPhone pictures can go into a collage without converting them first. The result is always one image (or one single-page PDF), which is easier to post, attach or print than a folder of separate files.

Grid maker styling: gaps, borders, corners

Gap sets the space between images, from 0 for edge-to-edge to 500 px, and Outer border adds a frame around the whole result. Both take the Background color: white, black, transparent or any hex color. Rounded corners rounds each image by up to 200 px, which gives a collage the soft, card-like look of a phone gallery. A gap of 10–20 px with a white or light grey background is the usual choice for social posts; a gap of 0 makes the joins invisible, which is how you would put the pieces of a split image back together.

Max width shrinks the finished image to a set width, which matters more than it seems: ten phone photos side by side would be over 40,000 px wide. 0 keeps the full size. Output format offers JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots or transparency, WebP for the web, and PDF to send the collage as a document; Quality is 85 for the lossy ones. To get a collage under a size limit for email or a form, run the result through compress image afterwards.

TipFor a grid that looks deliberate, crop all photos to the same ratio first with Grid cells on Fill, and keep the gap equal to the outer border.

Fixing an uneven merge

  1. One image is blurrier than the rest

Largest enlarged a small image to match the others. Use Smallest or Auto, or replace it with a larger version.

  2. The merged file is huge

Set Max width, for example 2048 px, and save photos as JPG or WebP rather than PNG.

  3. Black boxes around the images

The background is black, or a transparent background was saved as JPG. Pick White or another color, or use PNG output.

  4. Images in the wrong order

Drag the thumbnails before merging, or switch Order to File name or Date taken.

Merging questions

How do I combine images side by side into one picture?

Upload the two images, keep Arrange on Side by side and Match sizes on Auto, and press Merge. Auto gives both pictures the same height so the edges line up, which is the usual layout for before-and-after comparisons.

Is this a grid maker for photo collages?

Yes. Choose Grid and set Columns; rows are added automatically, so 9 photos in 3 columns make a 3 × 3 collage and 6 photos make a 3 × 2 one. Grid cells on Fill crops each photo to the same cell so there are no gaps. The grid maker page starts with a 3-column grid.

How can I merge multiple images online into one long screenshot?

Choose Stacked. Every image gets the same width and they are placed top to bottom in the order shown. Set Max width to 1080 or 1440 px if the result is for a phone or a chat app, because full-size stacked screenshots can get very tall.

Can I combine images into a PDF instead of a picture?

Yes, pick PDF as Output format and the merged layout is saved as a one-page PDF. If you want one image per page instead, use the image to PDF tool.

Why are some photos cropped in my grid?

Grid cells on Fill crops each image to the cell shape so the grid is perfectly even. Switch it to Fit whole image to see every photo complete, with the background color filling the leftover space.

Can the merged image have a transparent background?

Yes, with Background set to Transparent and PNG or WebP as Output format. JPG has no transparency, so a JPG result fills gaps and borders with white unless you choose another color.

Can I merge photos of different orientations in one grid?

Yes. With Grid cells on Fill, portrait and landscape photos are cropped to the same cell, so the grid stays even; keep the subject near the center of each photo. With Fit whole image, each photo keeps its full frame and the background color fills the rest of its cell.

Does merging lower the quality of my photos?

Only as much as the resizing and the output format require. Images that are scaled down to match their neighbors lose pixels but stay sharp, and JPG or WebP output at Quality 85 is visually identical to the source. PNG output is lossless but much larger for photo collages.
