NEF to JPG Converter
NEF is the raw format every Nikon camera has written since the D1 in 1999. It holds more than a JPG can, but almost nothing outside a photo editor opens it. Convert the NEF files here to get JPGs for clients, social posts, prints and family albums.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the NEF files
Drag up to 20 raws from the card reader or a Lightroom export folder. Each NEF can be up to 95 MB.
- 2
Check quality and metadata
Quality starts at 90 and camera data is kept, because Strip metadata is off on this page. Turn it on under Advanced settings before posting photos that should not reveal GPS position or the camera's serial number.
- 3
Press Convert to JPG
Download each JPG or one ZIP. The originals and results are deleted from the server after 30 minutes.
Upload Nikon NEF raws, keep quality 90 and press Convert to JPG: you get full-size JPGs developed from the sensor data, with EXIF kept unless you strip it.
Nikon NEF to JPG: what makes NEF hard to open
NEF, short for Nikon Electronic Format, wraps the sensor readout in a TIFF-based structure together with Nikon's private maker notes. Cameras let you choose uncompressed, lossless compressed or compressed NEF, and the Z9 added High Efficiency raw in 2021. Each variant and each new camera model needs explicit support in the reading software, which is why a three-year-old editor can show an error on a brand-new Z body.
Nikon's own answer is NX Studio, a free program released in 2021 that replaced ViewNX-i and Capture NX-D. It works well on the computer it is installed on, but it does not help the person you are sending photos to. A JPG is the format every inbox, phone and print kiosk accepts. Canon shooters with the same problem can use CR3 to JPG.
Three ways to get a JPG out of a NEF

Develop the raw data
Decodes the sensor data and writes a new JPG.
- Full sensor resolution

- Works without installing anything
Edit, then export
Adjust exposure and color in NX Studio or Lightroom first.
- Highlight and shadow recovery

Nikon Electronic Format
Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) is the raw image format written by Nikon cameras. Nikon has used it since the D1 in 1999, with uncompressed, lossless and lossy compressed options depending on the camera. A raw file stores the sensor data before the camera applies white balance, sharpening and compression, which leaves far more room to recover highlights, shadows and colour when editing. Files are large and cannot be shared directly on websites, social networks or most phones. Lightroom, Capture One, darktable and the manufacturer's own software open them, but plain image viewers often show only a small embedded preview or nothing at all.

JPEG image
JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

People convert NEF to JPG to hand Nikon raw shots to someone who has no raw editor, from a client reviewing a shoot to a print lab or a social app, without installing NX Studio or Lightroom on another machine.
Batch convert NEF to JPG for a client or a print lab
For a shoot of a few hundred frames, convert in batches of 20 and download each batch as a ZIP. The JPGs keep the original file names with a .jpg extension, so the numbering matches your NEF folder and a client's picks map straight back to the raws you will edit.
Print labs usually want sRGB JPG at full resolution, which is this page's default output. For online proofing galleries, set Resize output image to a longest side of 2048 px; the files load faster and nobody can print a full-size copy from the proof. Size limits for email or portals are easier to meet afterwards with compress image to 500 KB.
NEF to JPG questions
Why are my NEF files not opening on my computer?
Windows needs Microsoft's Raw Image Extension and macOS needs a system update that knows your camera before NEF previews appear. Even then, most other apps, websites and phones cannot read the format. A JPG copy avoids all of them.
Is the JPG just the preview hidden inside the NEF?
Every NEF carries an embedded JPEG preview, and some quick tools simply pull that out. This converter develops the raw sensor data instead, so you get the full pixel dimensions of the sensor rather than a preview that may be smaller or more compressed.
Why do the colors differ from my camera's Picture Control?
Picture Controls such as Vivid or Portrait are applied by the camera and by Nikon's own software. Other raw decoders use neutral rendering, so the JPG can look a little flatter. Open the NEF in Nikon's free NX Studio if you need the in-camera look exactly.
Can it read High Efficiency NEF from the Z8 and Z9?
High Efficiency raw uses a newer compression method that even Adobe and other major editors needed updates to read after the Z9 launched in 2021. If an HE file fails here, export a JPG or TIFF from NX Studio, or shoot lossless compressed NEF for files every tool can open.
What JPG quality should I pick for prints?
Keep 90 or higher for prints up to poster size; artifacts at that level are not visible on paper. For web galleries 80 to 85 is plenty, and resizing to a longest side of 2048 px cuts the file far more than lowering quality does.
Is NEF to PNG better than JPG?
Only if you need lossless pixels for retouching outside a raw editor. A full-resolution PNG from a 45 MP sensor is very heavy. For editing, keep the NEF; for sharing, JPG is lighter. NEF to PNG is there when a workflow insists.
