Image to SVG Converter

Turn a JPG or PNG logo, icon, signature or drawing into a vector file whose edges stay sharp at any size. The converter traces the shapes in your picture and writes them as paths you can edit, cut or print.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the image

Add up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF or PDF files of up to 95 MB each. Clean, high-contrast artwork traces best.

  2. 2

    Pick format and color mode

Keep SVG under Convert to or choose EPS, PDF, DXF, AI or PSD. Set Color mode to Black & white for logos and signatures, or Color with a Number of colors for illustrations.

  3. 3

    Vectorize and download

Press Vectorize to SVG (the button names your format), open the result to check it, and download. Uploads are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

What does converting an image to SVG actually do?

It traces the edges of each shape in a pixel image and replaces them with mathematical curves. The result is a vector file that stays crisp at any size and can be recolored, edited or sent to a cutting machine.

Convert image to SVG: how tracing works

A JPG or PNG is a grid of colored squares; an SVG is a list of shapes. To get from one to the other, the tracer first reduces the image to a small set of colors, groups neighboring pixels of the same color into regions, and then fits curves along the border of each region. The quality of the result therefore depends far more on the source than on any setting: a clean logo on a plain background traces almost perfectly, a blurry screenshot of the same logo does not.

SVG has been a W3C standard since 2001 and opens in every modern browser, in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and Affinity Designer, and in cutting software such as Cricut Design Space. Because it is text, an optimized SVG of a simple logo is often only a few kilobytes. The how to convert PNG to SVG guide walks through preparing artwork before tracing.

The two most searched jobs have their own pages: JPG to SVG for logos saved as photos and convert PNG to SVG free for exports with transparency. Both run this same tracer.

Output formats: SVG, EPS, PDF, DXF, AI and PSD

SVG
Vector that opens in browsers, Inkscape, Figma, Illustrator and Cricut software. The pick for websites, icons and cutting machines.
EPS
Vector for Illustrator, CorelDRAW and print workflows; what print shops and older design tools still ask for.
PDF
Vector inside a file any PDF reader opens, and Illustrator edits. Good for print-ready logos and for sharing with people who are not designers.
DXF
Vector for AutoCAD, LightBurn and CNC software, used for laser cutting, plotting and CAD drawings.
AI
Native Adobe Illustrator artwork, for handing the trace to an Illustrator user.
PSD
A layered raster file for Photoshop or Photopea that keeps the traced result as its own layer.

Tracing settings in plain words

Color mode is the first choice. Black & white splits the image at a Threshold (128 by default, 1–254): darker pixels become black, lighter ones white. Lower it if thin lines vanish, raise it if shapes look blotchy. Color and Grayscale use Number of colors instead, from 2 to 64 with 16 as the default; 4–8 suits most logos and 16–32 suits illustrations.

Detail decides how small a speck may be and still become a shape; high values keep texture, low values clean up noise. Smoothing rounds jagged edges, which helps with small or JPG-compressed sources. Curves chooses smooth curves for most art, straight lines for geometric logos, or pixel edges for pixel art. Remove background drops the largest shape touching the edges, Optimise SVG rounds coordinates and merges paths so the file is often half the size, and Outlines only exports strokes without fill for plotters and vinyl cutters.

  1. Low detail

Bold shapes only; ideal for noisy scans and stamps

  2. Default 60

Keeps letters and small icons, drops stray specks

  3. High detail

Keeps fine texture; larger files and more nodes to edit

Traces well

  • Logos and wordmarks with flat colors
  • Signatures and handwriting on white paper
  • Icons, stamps, stencils and clip art
  • Line drawings and coloring pages

Traces poorly

  • Photos of people, landscapes and food
  • Small, blurry or heavily compressed JPGs
  • Images with gradients, shadows or glow effects
  • Screenshots with tiny anti-aliased text

Getting a clean SVG trace

DoDon't
Lower Detail to 30–40 and raise Smoothing when tiny spots surround the logo; they are JPG artefacts the tracer took for shapesTrace a small, heavily compressed copy when a larger source image exists
Switch Curves to Straight lines for geometric artwork whose edges come out wobblyRaise Detail to get rid of specks; more detail traces more of the noise
Tick Remove background, or crop tightly to the artwork first with crop imageLeave a white box behind a logo that will sit on colored backgrounds
Set Number of colors to match the artwork exactlyExpect traced colors to hit a brand color exactly; recolor the paths in your vector editor when it must be precise

Image to SVG questions

How do I convert an image to SVG for free?

Upload the picture, keep Convert to on SVG and press the vectorize button; there is nothing to install and no sign-up. For best results, crop the image to the logo or drawing first and use the largest version you have.

Can I convert JPG to SVG and keep the colors?

Yes. Use Color mode and set Number of colors to roughly the number of flat colors in the artwork, often 4–8 for a logo. Each color area becomes its own shape. JPG to SVG starts with settings tuned for JPG input, which needs a little more Smoothing to hide compression noise.

Is there a way to convert PNG to SVG free with a transparent background?

PNG is the better source because it has no JPG noise and may already be transparent. Tick Remove background to drop the largest shape touching the edges, usually a white backdrop, so the SVG is transparent as well. See convert PNG to SVG free.

Why does my photo look like a poster after converting to SVG?

Vectors describe flat shapes, not the millions of subtle tones in a photograph. Tracing a photo produces a stylized, posterized look, which can be a deliberate effect but never a faithful copy. For a photo that just needs a different format, use the image converter instead.

Does converting an image to SVG make it higher resolution?

It makes it resolution-independent: the paths can be scaled to any size without pixels showing. But the tracer can only follow what is in the source, so a 100 px logo gives rough shapes that stay rough at any size. Use the biggest, sharpest original available.

Which file should I use for Cricut or Silhouette?

SVG. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio both import SVG, and Outlines only exports lines without fill when you want the cutter to follow the edges. Laser cutters and CAD programs usually prefer DXF.

Can I vectorize a page of a PDF?

Yes. Upload the PDF and enter page numbers under PDF pages, such as 1 or 1-3, 5. Each page is traced as an image and saved as its own vector file.
