Answer

Is it worth converting PNG to WebP?

For images on a website, almost always. The same picture, including its transparency, typically comes out far smaller, and every current browser displays it. Keep PNG for files you still edit or send to people who open them in desktop software.

Why web developers swap PNG for WebP

PNG is lossless by design: it was standardized by the W3C in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF and it never throws pixel data away. That is perfect for a master file and wasteful on a web page, where a 1600 px hero illustration saved as PNG can weigh more than every script on the page put together.

Google introduced WebP in 2010 to close that gap. It offers two engines in one container: a lossless mode that Google's own published comparison puts at roughly 26% smaller than PNG, and a lossy mode based on the VP8 video codec that is smaller still. Both modes carry a full alpha channel, which is the feature that keeps logos and cut-out product photos usable on colored backgrounds.

Page speed tools such as PageSpeed Insights have long pointed at oversized PNG and JPEG files as an easy saving, and a converted image set is often the quickest improvement you can make to Largest Contentful Paint. If the images also need new dimensions, run them through the image resizer first, then convert.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

Site owners convert PNG to WebP to cut page weight while keeping transparency; going from WebP back to PNG is about editing or opening a file in software that will not read WebP.

The figures above are a typical result for a photographic cut-out, not a promise. Flat graphics shrink less in lossy mode and sometimes more in lossless mode. Screenshots full of text are the one case where lossy WebP can blur letter edges; tick Lossless for those and you still save space without any change to the pixels.

Dimensions, color and transparency carry over unchanged, and Strip metadata (on by default) drops editing history a browser never needs.

Before you upload the WebP files to your site

  • Keep the original PNGs in a separate folder; WebP is a delivery copy, not an editing master.
  • Check that your CMS accepts .webp uploads (WordPress does from version 5.8).
  • Look at one transparent image on both a white and a dark background to confirm the edges are clean.
  • Update image references in your HTML or CSS from .png to .webp, or let your CMS regenerate thumbnails.
  • Compare page weight before and after in your browser's network panel so you know what you saved.

PNG to WebP questions

Does WebP keep the transparent background of my PNG?

Yes. WebP stores an alpha channel in both its lossy and lossless modes, so cut-out product shots and logos stay transparent. In lossy mode the edge pixels are compressed a little; if you see a faint halo around fine hair or text, rerun the file with Lossless ticked. Need the reverse later? WebP to PNG restores an editable PNG.

Should I pick lossy or lossless WebP for a PNG?

Lossless when the PNG is flat UI, a diagram, a logo or pixel art, because every pixel stays exactly as it was and the file still usually drops in size. Lossy at quality 75 to 85 when the PNG is really a photograph or a soft illustration, because that is where the big savings are.

Which browsers can display WebP images?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera have shown WebP for years, and Safari joined with version 14 in 2020 (on macOS Big Sur or later and iOS 14). In practice every browser in active use today renders it, so a plain img tag pointing at a .webp file is enough for most sites.

Can WordPress accept WebP uploads?

WordPress 5.8, released in July 2021, added WebP to the media library's allowed upload types. Older installs reject the file unless a plugin adds the MIME type, so check your version before converting a whole folder.

Why is my WebP bigger than the original PNG?

It happens with tiny PNGs that use an indexed palette of a few colors, such as an 8-color icon, because PNG is already very efficient there. Try Lossless for those files, and if the result is still larger, keep the PNG; the savings come from bigger, more colorful images.

Can I convert a folder of PNGs to WebP at once?

Up to 20 files go through in one run, each up to 95 MB, and they come back together in a ZIP. For a larger folder, repeat in batches of 20; there is no daily limit and the uploads are erased automatically after 30 minutes.
