Answer

How do I put iPhone HEIC photos on a website?

Convert them to WebP. Upload the .heic files, keep Quality at 80, set a longest side of about 2048 px under Resize output image and press Convert to WebP. The files display in every current browser and carry no GPS location.

HEIC to WebP: iPhone photos straight onto a website

Apple made HEIC the default camera format with iOS 11 in 2017, under the High Efficiency camera setting, because HEVC compression stores a photo in roughly half the space of a comparable JPEG. Google released WebP in 2010 for the opposite end of the pipe: fast delivery in browsers. Both are modern, compact formats, but only WebP is understood by the web.

Most people take the long route: export JPEG from the phone, then convert JPEG to WebP for the site. Each step is a lossy encode, and the JPEG in the middle is the largest file of the three. Going from HEIC to WebP in one step decodes the original once and encodes once, which keeps more fine detail at the same file size. The background on all three formats is in AVIF, HEIC and WebP explained.

Which WebP quality matches an iPhone HEIC photo

  1. 60

    Thumbnails and grid previews

  2. 75

Blog photos at 1200 px wide

  3. 80

Default here: shop and hero images

  4. 92

    Portfolio work viewed full screen

HEIC

High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is the HEIF image container (an MPEG standard from 2015) holding pictures compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad in 2017 because it stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG with similar quality. It can hold depth data, Live Photo sequences, transparency and 10-bit colour. Support outside the Apple ecosystem is patchy: many Windows PCs, web browsers, websites and online forms cannot open HEIC without extra codecs.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

HEIC goes to WebP when iPhone photos are headed for a website, a blog or an online shop and should load quickly in every browser without a JPEG step in between; WebP is never turned back into HEIC except to save it to an Apple photo library.

What an iPhone photo loses on the way to WebP

Motion, depth and HDR highlights are not carried over

Live Photo motion lives in a separate video file and is left behind. The depth map behind Portrait mode and the HDR gain map of recent iPhones are extra images inside the HEIC that WebP cannot store, so the WebP is a flat, standard-range still. Keep the original HEIC in your photo library.

Sizing HEIC photos for web pages before converting

A 12 MP iPhone photo is 4032 × 3024 px, and a 48 MP one is 8064 × 6048 px. Both fit within WebP's maximum of 16,383 px per side, but neither belongs on a web page at full size: a typical content column is 700 to 1200 px wide, and even a full-width hero rarely needs more than 2400 px. Set Set longest side to 2048 px for most sites, or 1600 px for blog posts.

Orientation is handled for you. Auto orient reads the rotation the iPhone recorded and turns the pixels upright, so portrait photos do not appear sideways in browsers that ignore the flag. If the photos are for people rather than pages, such as relatives on Windows PCs, HEIC to JPG is the better target.

HEIC to WebP questions from site owners

Why not upload the HEIC to my website as it is?

Chrome, Firefox and Edge do not display HEIC images in a web page; among major browsers only Safari does. A HEIC on your site would show as a broken image for most visitors. WebP works in all of them, including Safari since version 14.

What happens to a Live Photo when it becomes WebP?

A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a separate short MOV clip. Only the still is converted, so the WebP shows the key photo without motion or sound. To keep the movement, export the Live Photo as a video on the iPhone and convert that instead.

Will the GPS location from my iPhone end up on my website?

Not with the default settings. Strip metadata is ticked, so GPS coordinates, the phone model and capture details are removed before the WebP is written.

Is the WebP smaller than the original HEIC?

At the same pixel size, usually not by much, and sometimes it is larger, because HEIC uses HEVC, a very efficient video codec. The real saving comes from resizing: a 4032 × 3024 photo reduced to 2048 px on the long side has about a quarter of the pixels and a much smaller file.

Does the WebP keep the bright HDR look of newer iPhone photos?

No. Recent iPhones save an extra gain map in the HEIC that HDR screens use to brighten highlights. WebP has no place for it, so the photo looks like the standard-range version you see on a regular monitor.

Can I convert a whole iPhone album to WebP?

Yes, in batches of 20 photos of up to 95 MB each, downloaded as ZIP files. For a large camera roll headed somewhere other than the web, bulk HEIC to JPG gives you the format every device opens.
