Answer

How do I convert an image to PDF online?

Upload one or more images, pick a page size, and press Convert. Each image becomes a page of one PDF in the order shown, with margins, orientation and an optional size limit set before you convert.

Convert images to PDF online: what you can control

The default is the simplest possible PDF: every page is exactly the size of its image, no margins, full quality, in the order you added the files. That suits sharing photos or a design proof. Change Page size to A4, Letter, Legal, A3, A5 or a custom width and height in millimeters as soon as the PDF will be printed or uploaded to a form, because those systems expect standard pages.

Orientation on Auto turns each page to match its image, so a landscape photo gets a landscape page in an otherwise portrait document. Margin adds white space of 5, 10 or 20 mm around each image on fixed-size pages. Images per page puts 2 or 4 images in a grid on each page. Page order follows the order you added the files, sorts them by file name, or by the date the photo was taken, which is handy for a set of numbered scans.

Most visitors come with one file type. PNG to PDF keeps screenshots sharp, JPG to PDF converter free handles camera photos and scans, and HEIC to PDF takes iPhone photos straight into a document. All of them are this tool with the input preselected.

From image to PDF under a size limit

  1. Images in

Photos are placed on pages at Image quality 85, the starting point.

  2. Size search

With Target size, images inside the PDF are recompressed and then downscaled until the whole file fits.

  3. PDF out

The finished PDF is at or just under your KB or MB limit, ready for the portal.

Application forms often cap uploads at 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB, and the cap applies to the PDF, not to each image. Compressing the photos separately and then converting rarely lands on the number, because the PDF adds its own structure. PDF file size set to Target size solves this by measuring the finished PDF. The more pages, the less each one gets: a single page reaches 100 KB comfortably, while ten photo pages under 100 KB will look rough. Split the upload or ask for a higher limit when that happens.

The quality group finishes the job. Strip metadata removes GPS and camera data from the images and leaves the PDF properties empty, Auto orient stops phone photos from coming out sideways, and PDF/A (archive) produces an archival PDF/A-2b file for offices that demand it. For a PDF you already have that is too big, compress PDF is the right tool.

When the PDF does not come out as expected

  • Pages out of order: phones name photos by time, so set Page order to Date taken or drag the thumbnails before converting
  • A thin image looking tiny on A4 is Fit keeping proportions; choose Same as image as page size, or Fill page if cropped edges are fine
  • A portal saying the PDF is too large: switch PDF file size to Target size and aim slightly under, such as 190 KB for a 200 KB limit
  • A scan that is hard to read after a strong size cap: upload fewer pages per PDF, or trim the photos to the paper first with crop image

Image to PDF questions

How can I convert an image to PDF free without signing up?

Upload the image here, keep the defaults and press Convert; there is no account to create, and one PDF can hold up to 50 images. It works the same in a phone browser as on a computer.

How do I resize an image to fit a PDF page?

Pick a fixed Page size such as A4 and leave Image on page on Fit, which scales each image to fit inside the page and keeps its proportions. Fill page covers the page edge to edge and crops the overflow; Actual size places the image at its print size from its DPI.

Can I use this as an image to PDF scanner on my phone?

Yes, in two steps. Take photos of the pages with the camera, then upload them here and choose A4 or Letter with a small margin. Auto orient fixes pages shot sideways, and a Target size keeps the PDF small enough to email or upload.

How do I add an image to an existing PDF?

Convert the image to a PDF here first, then combine it with the existing document in merge PDF, where you can choose where the new page goes.

Why is my PDF so much larger than the photos?

It usually is not much larger; a PDF of photos is roughly the sum of the JPGs inside it. PNG screenshots and HEIC photos are re-encoded at Image quality 85, which can make them bigger or smaller. Set a Target size if the total has to stay under a limit, or start from image to PDF under 200 KB.

When should I tick PDF/A?

Only when the receiving office asks for PDF/A or an archival PDF, which some courts, tax portals and government e-filing systems do. The tool writes PDF/A-2b, a version of the ISO 19005 standard; the file is slightly larger because fonts and color profiles must be embedded.

Can I put the front and back of an ID card on one page?

Yes. Set Images per page to 2 with A4 or Letter pages and upload the front and back as two images. Choose 4 per page for a contact sheet of several documents.
