Convert Image to Another Format
Most people who need to convert an image know only that the current file is wrong for where it is going. Start from the destination, pick the format the table below suggests, and convert the whole batch in one pass.

85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add your images
Drop up to 20 pictures of up to 95 MB each: phone photos, screenshots, design files or camera RAW.
- 2
Choose the target
Convert to starts on JPG, the safest choice for photos. Switch it to the format the decision table recommends for your destination.
- 3
Convert and download
Press Convert to JPG or the button for your target. Several files arrive as one ZIP.
What format should I convert my image to?
JPG for photos that anyone must open, PNG for graphics and transparency, WebP or AVIF for your own website, ICO for icons. Everything else is for a specific program that asks for it.
Choose an image format by where it is going
A format is only useful if the next app, site or person can open it, so the destination decides, not the file you have now. When a row offers two formats, the first is the safer one.
| The image is going to | Convert to | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Email, an upload form, a print kiosk | JPG | Transparent areas become white; change **Transparent areas** if needed |
| A document, slide or design layout | PNG | Large for photos; fine for logos and screenshots |
| Your own website or online store | WebP or AVIF | WordPress has accepted WebP since 5.8 (2021) and AVIF since 6.5 (2024) |
| An Apple Photos library | HEIC | Some Windows apps and web forms will refuse it |
| A chat as a short animation | GIF or WebP | GIF holds 256 colors per frame; WebP keeps full color |
| A print shop or a scan archive | TIFF | Set **Color space** to Keep original for print color |
| Old Windows software or a device screen | BMP | No compression at all, so files are large |
| A website tab or Windows shortcut | ICO | Start from a square image of at least 256 × 256 px |
| A cutting machine or a scalable logo | SVG via tracing | Needs real vector paths, not pixels in an SVG wrapper |

This tool accepts common image formats, including JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP and TIFF. The format is detected automatically from the file, so you do not need to know what kind of image you have.
People search for a way to convert an image when a file is the wrong type for the place it is going but they are unsure which type is right; matching the destination first saves converting twice.
Metadata and color profiles: what survives each format
EXIF holds the camera, the date and often the GPS position; JPG, TIFF, WebP, AVIF and HEIC can all store it, and PNG gained an official eXIf chunk in 2017. GIF and BMP have no place for EXIF, so converting to them drops it.
An ICC color profile tells software how to read the color numbers. iPhones since the iPhone 7 capture in the wider Display P3 space, and a P3 photo shown without its profile looks flat. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF can embed a profile; GIF cannot. With Keep color profile ticked and Color space on sRGB, colors land correctly on any screen, while Keep original suits files bound for a printer.
Size follows the target too: lossless to JPG, WebP or AVIF usually shrinks a file a lot, and the reverse grows it with no gain in detail.
Convert image questions
Can I convert a batch of images into different formats at once?
One batch gets one target: every file goes to the format set under Convert to. To get both a JPG and a WebP of the same pictures, run the batch twice.
Which format gives the smallest file without visible loss?
For photos, AVIF is usually smallest, then WebP, then JPG, all at the default Quality of 85. For flat graphics and screenshots, lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG with identical pixels. The AVIF, HEIC and WebP guide compares the newer formats in detail.
Which image formats does Windows open without extra software?
The Photos app in Windows 10 and 11 opens JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF out of the box. HEIC needs Microsoft's HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, so send JPG to people on Windows.
What should I convert a Photoshop PSD to before sending it to a client?
PNG for transparent areas or sharp text, JPG for a photo-heavy layout. Either way the layers are merged, so keep the PSD for edits.
Will picking SVG make my logo scalable?
No. Saving pixels in an SVG file does not turn them into shapes, so the logo still blurs when enlarged. For clean paths that scale to any size, trace the logo with image to SVG instead.
Do converted images keep the location where a photo was taken?
Not by default. Strip metadata is ticked and removes GPS coordinates, camera model and date. Untick it to keep them, as long as the target format can carry EXIF.
