How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the ARW files

Drop up to 20 files from any Sony Alpha, RX or ZV camera, each up to 95 MB. Compressed, lossless compressed and uncompressed ARW are all read.

  2. 2

    Check metadata and size

Camera EXIF is kept by default. Under Advanced settings you can tick Strip metadata, or set Resize output image if you do not need every pixel.

  3. 3

    Press Convert to PNG

Download each PNG or one ZIP. The uploads and results are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

What is the best way to turn ARW into PNG?

Upload the ARW files here and press Convert to PNG. Each raw is developed with the camera's white balance into a lossless PNG at full resolution, with EXIF kept, so nothing is lost before you edit.

ARW to PNG for editing instead of sharing

An ARW file is not an image yet. It holds the 12- or 14-bit readings of each photosite behind Sony's color filter, and a raw developer has to turn those readings into RGB pixels. Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop does it, as do Lightroom and Capture One, but GIMP, Figma, Canva, PowerPoint and almost every web tool do not.

PNG is the natural handoff for that second group. It is lossless, so a background removal, a composite or a magazine layout starts from the full detail the camera captured. JPG would add compression artifacts every time the image is saved, which shows up along hair, foliage and text overlays. For a quick look or a client gallery, ARW to JPG remains the lighter choice.

ARW

Sony Alpha Raw

Sony Alpha Raw (ARW) is the raw image format written by Sony cameras. It is used by Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras and DSLRs, with uncompressed, lossless and lossy compressed variants depending on the model. A raw file stores the sensor data before the camera applies white balance, sharpening and compression, which leaves far more room to recover highlights, shadows and colour when editing. Files are large and cannot be shared directly on websites, social networks or most phones. Lightroom, Capture One, darktable and the manufacturer's own software open them, but plain image viewers often show only a small embedded preview or nothing at all.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

ARW is developed into PNG when the photo will be retouched, cut out or placed in a layout by software that cannot open Sony raw, and the file must not pick up JPG compression on the way.

Sony ARW versions over the years

  1. 2006

    ARW arrives

The DSLR-A100, Sony's first Alpha body after buying Konica Minolta's camera business, writes the first ARW files.

  2. 2013

    Full frame mirrorless

The a7 and a7R put ARW into the camera line that most Sony shooters use today.

  3. 2015

    Uncompressed option

The a7R II and a7S II gain an uncompressed 14-bit raw setting, answering complaints about Sony's lossy raw compression.

  4. 2021

    Lossless compressed

The a1 introduces lossless compressed ARW, later added to the a7 IV and other bodies, giving smaller files without discarding data.

ARW to PNG questions

Why choose PNG over TIFF for a developed ARW?

Both are lossless. PNG opens in browsers, chat apps, Canva, Figma and every office suite, while TIFF is mostly read by photo and print software. If your next step is a design tool or a web upload, PNG avoids another conversion; for a print shop that lists TIFF, ask for that instead.

Is the PNG the same as editing the raw in Lightroom?

No. The converter applies a neutral development with the white balance recorded by the camera and no creative look. Lightroom or Capture One let you decide exposure, white balance and noise reduction per frame before export. The PNG is a faithful, unstyled starting point.

Why is my PNG over 50 MB?

PNG compresses without discarding detail, and raw files are full of fine sensor noise that does not compress well. A 24-megapixel frame typically produces a PNG in the tens of megabytes. Use Resize output image under Advanced settings if you need it smaller, or choose ARW to JPG for sharing.

Does the PNG keep the Sony lens and shutter data?

Yes, by default. Strip metadata is unticked on this page, so camera model, lens, exposure and capture time are written into the PNG. Tick it before posting a picture publicly if the files contain GPS coordinates.

Can I convert ARW files from a Sony phone?

Xperia phones with Photography Pro save raw as DNG, not ARW, so they belong on DNG to PNG. ARW comes from Alpha, RX, ZV and a few other Sony cameras.

Can I convert raw shots from several Sony bodies in one go?

Yes. The converter reads ARW from every generation, so frames from an a6000, an a7 III and an a1 can sit in the same batch of 20. Each file keeps its own pixel dimensions.
