85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

Converting a whole camera roll in batches of 20
A typical iPhone photo is a few megabytes, so twenty of them upload in moments and the per-file limit rarely matters. The batch size is what shapes the job: a 300-photo vacation becomes fifteen runs, each producing its own ZIP.
Keep each ZIP in a folder named after the run, or extract them all into one destination folder as you go. Because the names follow the iPhone's IMG numbering, files from different runs never collide and land in shooting order. If a single photo needs to be under a portal's size limit afterwards, compress image to 500 KB handles that one file.
Export iPhone photos as JPG before you even convert
Open Settings, then Photos (on iOS 18, Settings → Apps → Photos), and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic. Photos copied to a computer over a USB cable then arrive as JPG.
- Applies to cable imports only
- The photos on the phone stay HEIC
Select the photos, choose File → Export → Export Photos, and set Photo Kind to JPEG with the quality you want.
- Handles thousands at once
- Needs the photos in the Mac's library
In Photos on iCloud.com, select the pictures, open the download options and pick Most Compatible to get JPGs instead of HEIC originals.
- Works from any browser
- Large selections download as a ZIP
If the files are already on your computer, a shared drive or a USB stick as .heic, convert them here in runs of twenty.
- No library or Apple device needed
- Names and dates kept by default
HEIC
High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC is the HEIF image container (an MPEG standard from 2015) holding pictures compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad in 2017 because it stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG with similar quality. It can hold depth data, Live Photo sequences, transparency and 10-bit colour. Support outside the Apple ecosystem is patchy: many Windows PCs, web browsers, websites and online forms cannot open HEIC without extra codecs.

JPEG image
JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

Bulk HEIC to JPG is what people need when an entire iPhone camera roll has to move to a Windows PC, an Android phone, a shared drive or a print lab at once, rather than fixing a single photo for a single upload.
After the bulk conversion: names, dates and storage
Apple made HEIC the default iPhone photo format with iOS 11 in 2017, so any camera roll from the last several years is mostly HEIC. When the JPGs reach Google Photos, a Windows Photos library or a print lab's uploader, they sort by the date taken stored inside each file, which is why this page leaves metadata in place.
Orientation is applied during conversion, so portrait shots come out upright without relying on a rotation flag. For a single photo with a portal in mind, the regular HEIC to JPG converter explains quality and privacy settings, and the guide to converting HEIC to JPG compares every method on phone and desktop.
Bulk HEIC to JPG FAQ
How do I convert 500 HEIC photos?
Split them into runs of twenty: select the first twenty in the folder, convert, download the ZIP, and continue with the next set. Sorting the folder by name first makes it easy to see where the previous run stopped, because iPhone file names count upward.
Will the JPGs keep their original file names?
Yes, each JPG keeps the name of its HEIC with a .jpg ending, so IMG_4512.HEIC becomes IMG_4512.jpg. The camera's running numbers keep the set in shooting order, and a photo library sorts them by the date stored inside.
Why are the date and location kept on this page?
A bulk conversion is usually an archive or a move to another photo library, and those sort everything by the date taken. Removing metadata would drop every photo onto the day you converted it. Tick Strip metadata for pictures headed to a public website.
I set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic. Why do I still have HEIC files?
That setting only converts photos copied over a USB cable to a computer. Photos sent by AirDrop, shared through iCloud links, saved to the Files app or downloaded as originals stay HEIC, which is why a converter is still needed for those.
How do I open the ZIP of converted photos?
Windows and macOS both open ZIP files natively: double-click on a Mac, or right-click and choose Extract All in Windows. On a phone or tablet, the unzip online tool extracts the JPGs without installing an app.
How much space will the JPG copies take?
Plan for more than the HEIC originals. HEIC stores an iPhone photo in roughly half the bytes of a JPG of the same quality, so a folder of 1 GB of HEIC files can come out around 1.5 to 2 GB as JPG at quality 85.
