Image to PNG Converter

Convert an image in almost any format to PNG, the lossless format with a full alpha channel that design tools, app stores and documents accept. Transparency in the source stays transparent.

PNG is the safe target for anything that is not a plain photo: it is lossless, it keeps transparency, and every editor, office suite and browser opens it.

Convert an image to PNG from any format

PNG exists because of a patent dispute. In December 1994 Unisys and CompuServe announced that software producing GIF files owed royalties for the LZW compression inside them. Developers on Usenet answered with a patent-free replacement within weeks, and PNG 1.0 became a W3C Recommendation in October 1996. Its third edition, published by the W3C in 2025, made animated PNG and HDR color part of the official standard.

Thirty years on, PNG is the default for screenshots on Windows and macOS and the format design tools, slide apps and documentation systems expect for graphics. App stores rely on it too: Apple's App Store Connect asks for a 1024 × 1024 px PNG icon. This converter takes almost any image type, from browser formats such as WebP and AVIF to Photoshop documents and camera RAW, and writes a standard PNG. If you need a photo that is small and opens everywhere, use image to JPG instead.

PNG bit depth and transparency, in numbers

64-bitthe deepest pixel PNG can store: 16 bits each for red, green, blue and alpha

Most images use 8 bits per channel, or 32 bits per pixel with transparency. 16-bit PNG is mainly for scans, medical images and editing workflows that must avoid banding.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

People convert an image of any type to PNG when the next step needs lossless pixels or a transparent background, such as editing, an app icon or a design layout; going from PNG to other formats is mostly about making files smaller.

Image to PNG: which sources gain the most

Web images with transparency
WebP, AVIF, GIF and ICO files keep their transparent areas. PNG's alpha channel holds 256 levels of opacity, so soft edges survive.
Vector and design files
SVG, EPS and AI artwork is drawn at the size you set under Resize output image; PSD files arrive as their merged visible layers.
Animated files
A PNG holds one picture. Animated input keeps the first frame, or exports every frame as its own PNG.
Photos and camera RAW
HEIC, JPG and RAW photos convert fine but have no transparency and become large files. Choose PNG only when you will edit them.

Colors are converted to sRGB by default and the source's ICC profile is kept, so a picture from a wide-gamut phone or a design app looks the same on a typical screen. Metadata such as GPS position and camera details is stripped unless you untick Strip metadata. Photos are rotated upright using their orientation flag, which matters because many viewers ignore that flag inside PNG files.

Size usually goes up. Lossless storage cannot match the compression of JPEG, WebP or HEIC, so expect a PNG of a photograph to be several times larger than the source. For a website, convert the finished image to WebP afterward; for uploads with a KB cap, compress image gets PNG and JPG files under the limit.

Image to PNG questions

Can I convert a PSD or a camera RAW file to PNG?

Yes. A PSD is converted from its flattened composite, the image you see with all visible layers merged, so the layers are not kept separately. RAW files from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm and others are developed with neutral settings and saved as PNG.

Why is my PNG ten times larger than the JPG I uploaded?

The JPG threw away detail to stay small; the PNG stores every decoded pixel exactly. For photographs that typically means five to ten times the bytes. Keep PNG for graphics, screenshots and images you will edit, and JPG for photos you share.

Why does App Store Connect reject my PNG app icon?

Apple asks for a 1024 × 1024 px PNG without transparency for the App Store icon. If the PNG has an alpha channel, even a fully opaque one, the upload can fail; export the icon flattened onto a solid background.

What is the difference between PNG-8, PNG-24 and PNG-32?

They are informal names from design apps. PNG-8 uses a palette of up to 256 colors, PNG-24 stores full color, and PNG-32 adds an 8-bit alpha channel. This converter keeps the color and transparency of the source instead of forcing a 256-color palette.

Is converting an image to PNG always lossless?

The PNG step is. Anything lost earlier, such as JPEG or lossy WebP compression in the source, stays in the picture, because PNG records what the source decodes to and cannot restore more.
