How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload a clear face photo

Use one well-lit photo taken straight on against a plain wall, up to 95 MB. A phone camera at arm's length or held by someone else works well.

  2. 2

    Choose the document

Pick your passport, visa or exam under Country & document, or Custom size for anything else. Check the Background color; most documents need white.

  3. 3

    Make the photo

Press Make, check the crop against the head guide, and download the single photo or the print sheet. Your photo is deleted from the server after 30 minutes.

Make a passport photo online from any selfie

The Country & document list holds 27 built-in specs, from the US 2 × 2 in photo and the DV Lottery upload to UK, Schengen, Canadian, Chinese and Japanese sizes and Indian exam portals such as SSC, IBPS, UPSC and NEET. Each spec stores the print size in millimeters, the pixel size, 300 DPI and, where the portal publishes one, a file-size window in KB. Choose Custom size for any document not on the list and enter width and height in mm, inches or pixels.

Auto-centre face finds your face and places the eyes and chin where the spec wants them, and Head-size guide draws the allowed chin-to-crown range, for example 25–35 mm on a US photo, so you can check the crop before downloading. Background replaces whatever was behind you with white, light grey or blue, or keeps the original. Most countries want white; the UK, Schengen countries and Australia accept light grey.

Most people need one of a few documents, each with its own page: the general passport size photo maker, US passport photo requirements for the 2 × 2 in format, and Indian passport photo size for Indian applications. The passport photo requirements by country article compares the rules side by side.

File size limits, DPI and printing

Online applications usually check the file as well as the face. Specs with a published window, such as the DV Lottery (up to 240 KB), China (40–120 KB) or SSC and IBPS (20–50 KB), apply it on their own. For anything else, tick Limit file size and enter a Max file size; the quality is lowered until the photo fits, and a photo that would be too small is padded up to the spec's minimum. Format stays on JPG, which almost every portal requires; PNG is only for print services that ask for it.

DPI is 300 by default, the print standard, at which a 35 × 45 mm photo is 413 × 531 px. For paper copies, Print layout places several photos on a 4×6 in (10 × 15 cm) sheet or an A4 page, Copies sets how many from 1 to 40, and Cut lines draws thin grey guides between them. A 4×6 in print from a pharmacy or photo kiosk is usually far cheaper than a photo booth. If you only need to change the KB of a signature or photo that is already the right size, the compress image tool is faster.

Use soft, even light from the front, such as a window facing youLeave shadows on your face or behind your head
Keep the whole head, from chin to top of hair, inside the guideWear hats, headphones or tinted glasses

  • The correct document is selected under Country & document
  • Background matches the country: white for most, light grey allowed for the UK, Schengen and Australia
  • The head fills the Head-size guide, not more and not less
  • The JPG is within the portal's KB window
  • For paper copies, the sheet is printed at 100% scale, not fit to page

Passport photo questions

Can you smile in a passport photo?

It depends on the country. The US State Department accepts a neutral expression or a natural smile with both eyes open. The UK, Canada, the Schengen countries and most others ask for a neutral expression with the mouth closed, because big smiles disturb face-recognition systems. When unsure, keep a relaxed, closed-mouth expression.

What is the size of a passport size photo in cm and inches?

The most common size worldwide is 3.5 × 4.5 cm, which is about 1.38 × 1.77 in, used by the UK, the Schengen countries, India, Australia and many others. The US uses 2 × 2 in (5.1 × 5.1 cm) and Canada 5 × 7 cm. Pick the exact document under Country & document rather than relying on a general size.

How many pixels is a passport size photo?

At 300 DPI, the print standard, a 35 × 45 mm photo is 413 × 531 px and a 2 × 2 in photo is 600 × 600 px. Online portals sometimes set their own pixel size, such as 600 × 750 px minimum for the UK digital application or 200 × 230 px for SSC exams, and the built-in specs use those numbers.

Can I make a passport photo online free and print it at a store?

Yes. Set Print layout to the 4×6 in sheet, choose the number of Copies, keep Cut lines on, and download the JPG. Any photo kiosk or online print service prints 4×6 in (10 × 15 cm) photos cheaply, and you cut out the copies at home.

Can I wear glasses in the photo?

For a US passport, no: glasses have not been allowed since November 2016 unless you have a medical statement. Many other countries allow them only without glare or tinted lenses, and the safest choice everywhere is to take them off.

What is the aspect ratio of a passport size photo?

A 35 × 45 mm photo has a 7:9 ratio, slightly taller than 3:4, while US and Philippine photos are square. That is why simply cropping a phone photo to 3:4 does not give a valid passport photo; the head size inside the frame matters as much as the outer shape.

Is this an ID photo maker too?

Yes. Exam, visa and ID specs are in the same list, and Custom size accepts any width and height in mm, inches or pixels for student ID cards, office badges and membership cards.
