Photo to PNG Converter

Photos arrive in a mix of formats: HEIC from an iPhone, JPG from Android, WebP from a website, raw from a camera. This converter turns any of them into a PNG, upright and with the location data removed, ready for a design tool, a cut-out or a platform that asks for PNG.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Pick the photos

Select up to 20 photos from your phone, camera folder or downloads; formats can be mixed in one batch, up to 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Check the defaults

Auto orient and Strip metadata are on, so photos come out the right way up and without GPS position. Change them under Advanced settings if needed.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG and save each image, or the whole set as a ZIP.

Converting a photo to PNG gives you a lossless copy that every editor and design tool opens. The picture looks the same; the file is larger, and that trade is worth it only for the jobs described below.

Convert a photo to PNG from any phone or camera

A modern photo library is rarely one format. iPhones save HEIC, most Android phones save JPG, pictures saved from websites tend to be WebP, and a camera in raw mode writes CR3, NEF, ARW or DNG. Design and presentation tools, print-on-demand shops and many templates want one predictable format, and PNG is the one that every one of them accepts without loss.

Phone photos also carry two pieces of hidden information that cause trouble after conversion. The first is the orientation flag: phones often store the image sideways and add a note telling viewers to rotate it. Software that ignores the note shows the photo lying on its side, so Auto orient applies the rotation to the pixels. The second is location. Photos taken with location services on include GPS coordinates precise enough to identify a home address, and Strip metadata removes them before the file goes anywhere.

If your goal is simply a smaller file to share, this is the wrong page; use photo to JPG instead. PNG suits photos that will be edited, layered or cut out.

PNG, JPG or WebP: which format fits your photo

PNG

Lossless master

Keeps every pixel of the decoded photo and can hold transparency once you cut the subject out.

  • No loss on repeated saves
  • Alpha channel available
  • Typically several times larger than JPG
Best for: Editing, cut-outs, design tools
JPG

Universal photo

Built in 1992 for photographs and still read by every device, app and upload form.

  • Small files
  • No transparency
  • Quality drops a little on each resave
Best for: Sharing, email, printing
WebP

Web delivery

Smaller than JPG at the same look, displayed by all current browsers.

  • Smallest of the three
  • Supports transparency
  • Some desktop apps still refuse it
Best for: Photos on your own website

ANY P

Any photo

This accepts photos from phones, cameras and the web, such as JPG, HEIC, PNG and WebP. The format is detected automatically from each file.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

PNG converter

Photos are converted to PNG when they are headed into a design, a cut-out or a platform that demands PNG; for sending a photo to people, the smaller JPG is the format to pick.

Places that ask for a photo in PNG format

Google Play requires the 1024 × 500 px feature graphic for an app listing as JPEG or 24-bit PNG without transparency, and Apple's App Store Connect takes screenshots as JPEG or PNG; teams often standardize on PNG for both. Print-on-demand services for shirts, stickers and mugs generally recommend PNG for artwork, because it allows transparent areas.

When a platform also limits the file size, convert first and reduce afterwards. The compress image tool can bring a heavy PNG down without changing its format.

Photo to PNG questions

Why would I save a photo as PNG instead of JPG?

Three good reasons: a platform or template asks for PNG, you plan to cut the subject out and need a format that can hold transparency later, or you will edit the picture in several rounds and want no extra compression between them. For simply sharing a photo, JPG is the better choice.

Can I convert an iPhone photo straight to PNG?

Yes. Upload the HEIC file as it is; there is no need to turn it into JPG first. iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11 in 2017, and the converter reads them directly.

Does converting a photo to PNG remove the background?

No. A PNG can hold transparency, but converting does not decide which pixels are background. The photo comes out with every pixel opaque. Remove the background in an editor afterwards, and save that result as PNG to keep the transparent areas.

Why is the PNG of my photo so large?

PNG compression is lossless and works by finding repeated patterns. Photos are full of fine noise and gradual color changes with few exact repeats, so a 12-megapixel photo as PNG is typically several times the size of the JPG. Resize it under Advanced settings if it does not need the full resolution.

Will the PNG keep where and when the photo was taken?

Not by default. Strip metadata removes GPS position, camera model and capture time, which is safer for photos you post or send. Untick it to keep them; PNG has been able to store EXIF data since an extension to the format was approved in 2017, although many apps ignore it.

Is a photo converted to PNG better quality than the original?

It is exactly as good as the source, never better. PNG stops further loss from this point on, but detail that the phone's JPG or HEIC compression removed does not come back.
