Trim Audio

Cut a song, a voice memo or a recording down to the part you want. Type where it should start and end, add a short fade so the cut does not click, and save it in the same format or as an MP3 or iPhone ringtone.

What an online audio trimmer is good for

Most trimming jobs are small: a ringtone from the chorus of a song, the one useful minute of a long voice memo, a podcast intro without the first ten seconds of silence, a lecture recording that starts before the speaker arrives. Installing an audio editor for that is overkill. An online audio trimmer does the one thing needed and leaves the rest of the file untouched. Because every cut is typed rather than dragged on a tiny waveform, it works as well on a phone screen as on a desktop, and a colleague can repeat it from the same two times.

Phones can trim too: the iPhone Voice Memos app has a trim button under Edit Recording, and many Android recorders offer one. They work only on their own recordings, though, and rarely let you type exact times, remove a middle section or change the format in the same step. Here every cut is set by the clock, so you can repeat it exactly, and Selected range set to Remove it handles the cut-out-the-middle case that phone apps usually skip.

Behind the scenes, compressed formats store sound in short frames, about 26 milliseconds each for MP3 at 44.1 kHz. When the format stays the same and no fades are added, the cut can follow those frames and the audio is copied without decoding. Changing the format, or adding a fade, means encoding again at the Bitrate you choose. If the trimmed file is still too large to send, run it through compress audio next.

Keep a section or remove it

Exports only the audio between Start at and End at.

  • Ringtones and song excerpts
  • Quotes from interviews
  • A single answer from a long recording
Best for: Making a short clip
Cut out

Deletes the range and joins the audio before and after it into one file.

  • Removing a cough, a call or a mistake
  • Dropping an advert from a podcast copy
  • Taking out a private remark
Best for: Cleaning up a full recording

Tips for clean cuts, fades and ringtones

DoDon't
Note start and end times in a player before uploading, down to tenths of a second if needed.Put long fades on spoken word; half a second is enough between sentences.
Use a 1–2 second Fade in on music cuts to avoid a click.Convert to a lossless format expecting better sound than the source.
Use a 2–3 second Fade out for ringtones and song excerpts.Re-trim an MP3 many times over with fades; each encode loses a little.
Keep Output format on Same as source when you only want a shorter file.Upload files over 95 MB; shorten them on the device or compress them first.
Pick M4R and stay under 40 seconds for an iPhone ringtone.Trim streaming downloads, which are DRM-protected and cannot be read.

Audio trimmer questions

How do I cut the middle out of a recording?

Set Start at and End at around the part you want gone, then switch Selected range to Remove it. The trimmer deletes that section and joins what came before and after into one file, which is how you take out a cough, a phone call or an advert from a recording.

Can I enter times with milliseconds?

Yes. Times accept up to three decimal places, such as 1:15.250 or 75.25, so you can place a cut between two words precisely. Find the exact moment in any media player first, and note the time it shows.

How long can an iPhone ringtone be?

Up to 40 seconds. Set Output format to M4R, choose a section of 40 seconds or less, and add a 2-second Fade out so it does not end abruptly. MP3 to M4R has the ringtone settings ready.

Does trimming reduce the audio quality?

When the format stays the same and the cut does not need re-encoding, the kept part is untouched. When you change the format or add fades, the audio is encoded again at the chosen Bitrate; 192 kbps keeps music clean, and lossless WAV or FLAC output loses nothing at all.

Can I trim the sound from a video file?

The trimmer takes audio files only. Pull the soundtrack out first with video to audio, then trim the MP3 here, or shorten the video itself, picture and sound together, with trim video.

Why is there a click at the start of my clip?

The cut landed in the middle of a sound wave, and the sudden jump from silence is heard as a click. A Fade in of 0.5 to 1 second smooths it out. Do the same with Fade out at the end.

Can I trim several files at once?

Yes, up to 10 files per run, all with the same start and end, range mode and fades, which suits recordings that share an intro or a fixed length. When every file needs its own cut points, trim them in separate runs. For bigger batches, the audio converter accepts start and end times for up to 20 files together.

How do I get rid of the silence before someone starts talking?

Play the recording, note the second where speech begins and type it into Start at with End at left empty. Everything before that point is dropped. If you also want a smaller file, the compress audio tool has a Trim silence option that removes silent stretches at both ends automatically.
