Image Effects

Apply one effect to a whole batch of photos in a single step: turn them black and white, invert the colors, brighten a dark shot, sharpen a soft one, or find and blur every face before you share a picture.

The eleven effects and what each one does

Effects here are corrections and privacy tools, not decorative frames or stickers. Each one is a single, predictable change to color, light or sharpness, so the same effect at the same Strength gives a consistent look across a whole batch, which is what you want for product photos, a set of scans or a slideshow.

The Strength slider runs from 1 to 100% and means "how much" for every effect it applies to: the amount of brightening, the radius of a blur, the size of the pixel blocks. Black & white and Invert colors have no strength because they are all-or-nothing changes.

  • Black & white

Removes all color and keeps brightness as shades of grey. The classic black and white photo converter.

  • Sepia

A warm brown tone named after the cuttlefish ink once used for it; strength sets how much of the original color remains.

  • Invert colors

Swaps every color for its opposite, like a film negative.

  • Brighten / Darken

Lifts or lowers the overall brightness; the image brightener and darkener most people are looking for.

  • More contrast / More saturation

Deepens the difference between light and dark, or makes colors more intense.

  • Blur / Sharpen

Softens the whole picture for a background look, or crisps up edges in a slightly soft photo.

  • Pixelate

Turns the image into visible square blocks, from a subtle mosaic to an unrecognizable one.

  • Blur faces

Finds faces and hides only them, with blur, pixelation or a solid black block.

How strong should the effect be?

  1. 15%

Subtle correction: a touch of brightness, contrast or sharpening

  2. 30%

Soft background blur, mild sepia, gentle mosaic

  3. 50% default

Clearly visible effect on any photo

  4. 90%

Faces and text unrecognizable with blur or pixelate

Corrections such as Brighten, Darken, More contrast, More saturation and Sharpen usually look best between 10 and 35%; above that, they start to look processed. Privacy effects work the other way around: Blur, Pixelate and Blur faces need 80% or more before a face or a license plate is truly unreadable. When converting a photo to black and white for print, raise contrast slightly afterwards, because grey photos often look flatter than the color original.

The face options appear when Blur faces is selected. Hide faces with chooses blur, pixelate or a solid block, and Mask shape chooses an ellipse that follows the head or a rectangle that also covers hair and ears. The output group keeps the original format or switches to JPG, PNG or WebP, with Quality 85 for JPG and WebP. Auto orient makes sure the effect is applied to an upright picture, and Strip metadata removes GPS position and camera data, recommended whenever you blur faces for privacy. To also change the format or size in bulk, follow up with the image converter or the image resizer.

Blur is not always permanent

Light blurs and large-block pixelation of text have been reversed or guessed in published research. For IDs, bank details or anything that must stay secret, use Solid block for faces, or crop the sensitive area out entirely.

Before you apply an effect to a batch

  • Try the effect on one photo first, then upload the rest with the same strength
  • Keep the originals; effects are applied to copies, but you download only the results
  • Use PNG output for graphics and screenshots so edges stay clean
  • Zoom in on small faces after Blur faces and run it again stronger if needed
  • For a black and white print, check the result on paper; screens make grey look lighter

Image effects questions

How do I convert a photo to black and white online?

Choose Black & white as the Effect and press Apply. Colors become shades of grey based on their brightness, so a red shirt and a blue sky end up as different greys. Convert photo to black and white opens with this effect already selected.

How do I invert image colors?

Pick Invert colors. Every color is replaced by its opposite: black becomes white, blue becomes yellow, and a photo looks like a film negative. Inverting twice gives back the original exactly, and it is handy for turning white-on-black diagrams or scanned negatives around.

Can I brighten a dark photo without losing detail?

Use Brighten at a low Strength, around 15–30%, and check the bright areas. Pushing a dark photo too far turns skies and windows pure white, and that lost detail cannot be recovered. Adding a little More contrast afterwards often looks better than more brightening.

How do I darken an image that is too bright?

Choose Darken and start around 20%. It lowers the brightness of the whole picture while keeping the colors, which tames an overexposed photo or makes white text stand out on a busy background. Areas that were already pure white stay flat, because a camera cannot record detail there in the first place.

How does the face blur effect find faces?

Face detection looks for the typical pattern of eyes, nose and mouth and places a mask over each face it finds; you choose blur, pixelate or a solid block. Detection works best on faces that look roughly toward the camera; check small, turned or partly covered faces in the result and use a stronger effect if any are still recognizable.

Is blurring a face enough to hide someone's identity?

A strong blur or pixelation at 80–100% hides a face from casual viewers. For documents or anything sensitive, use Solid block, which covers the face with black and cannot be undone, and keep Strip metadata on so the photo carries no location.

Can I remove color from only part of an image?

No. Every effect except Blur faces applies to the whole picture. For a color-splash look, you would need a layer-based editor; here you can crop the area you want first with crop image and then apply the effect.

Does applying an effect change the file size?

Usually only a little. Black and white and blur effects often make files slightly smaller because there is less fine color detail to store; sharpening and added contrast can make them slightly larger. Output format and Quality have a bigger effect than the filter itself.
