Photo to GIF Converter

Turn a photo from your phone, camera or scanner into a GIF when the place it is going accepts nothing else. The picture is resized and reduced to a 256-color palette, the two things a GIF needs to stay a sensible size.

Convert a photo to GIF only when GIF is required; the format was designed in 1987 for graphics with few colors, not for photographs.

When a photo has to be a GIF

CompuServe introduced GIF in 1987 so its online members could exchange pictures over slow modems, and the 1989 GIF89a revision added transparency and the frame timing that made animation possible. That history is why GIF still appears in so many places: older forum software and avatar settings, signature builders, e-learning templates, and GIF editors where a still photo is one frame in a sequence you are assembling.

Those are the cases this page is for. If the destination also takes JPG or PNG, use photo to JPG or photo to PNG instead; the picture will look better and the file will be smaller.

Photo to GIF and the 256-color palette

256colors per frame, the most a GIF palette can hold

A JPG or PNG photo can use any of 16.7 million colors.

To build the GIF, the converter studies your photo and picks the 256 colors that represent it best, then maps every pixel to one of them. Portraits and landscapes with smooth gradients suffer most, because a sunset sky may need hundreds of shades of orange on its own. Scenes full of texture, such as foliage, crowds or street shots, hide the reduction well.

Size matters in two ways. A smaller picture has fewer pixels to compress, and the palette compromises are harder to see at a small scale. That is why this page starts at 800 px on the longest side. GIF also has no standard place for EXIF data, so the camera model and GPS location of the original do not travel with the file.

Graphics Interchange Format

GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

A photo becomes a GIF when an upload field, a template or a GIF editor will take nothing else, not because GIF suits photographs; in every other case a JPG, PNG or WebP of the same photo looks better and weighs less.

GIF, PNG or WebP for a still photo

GIF

Only when required

256 colors, one transparent color, accepted by old systems.

  • Works in every browser since the 1990s
  • Grain or banding on photos
  • Usually the largest file
Best for: GIF-only upload fields and frame editors
PNG

Exact pixels

Lossless with full transparency.

  • No color loss
  • Large for photos
  • Opens in every editor
Best for: Photos headed into editing or design
WebP

Small and modern

Lossy or lossless, with animation and alpha.

  • Smallest of the three
  • All current browsers display it
  • Some older apps still refuse it
Best for: Photos for your own website

Photo to GIF questions

Why does my photo look grainy after turning it into a GIF?

A photo contains tens of thousands of distinct colors, and a GIF frame can hold at most 256. Converters fill the gap by scattering pixels of nearby palette colors, called dithering, which reads as fine grain on skin, sky and shadows. It is the format's limit, not a setting gone wrong.

Will a photo GIF move or animate?

No. One photo produces one still frame, which is still a valid GIF file. To make a moving GIF, start from a video clip with MP4 to GIF or the video to GIF tool.

Why is the GIF bigger than my JPG photo?

GIF compresses with LZW, which works well on flat areas and badly on the noise and gradients in photographs. At the same pixel size a photo GIF is typically several times the JPG. Keeping the 800 px default holds it to a size most upload fields accept.

Can an iPhone photo be converted to GIF directly?

Yes. HEIC files from an iPhone are accepted as they are, rotated upright using their orientation tag, and then converted. There is no need to change the camera to Most Compatible first.

Is there a way to keep the photo looking natural but still use a GIF?

Shrink it. Banding and grain are easiest to see at full size; at 400 to 800 px on the longest side a 256-color photo looks close to the original. Busy, textured scenes also hide palette limits better than a clear blue sky or a studio backdrop.
