NEF to PNG Converter

Turn Nikon raw photos into PNG files that any editor can open and save again without adding compression artifacts. Useful when the next step is retouching, cut-outs or a design tool, not a quick share.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add your NEF files

Drop up to 20 .nef files from a Nikon DSLR or Z camera onto the upload area. Each file can be up to 95 MB, which covers lossless compressed NEFs from 45 MP bodies.

  2. 2

    Decide on the pixel size

PNG keeps the full sensor resolution by default. If the file only needs to fill a 1920 px layout, open Advanced settings and set Resize output image to keep the PNG light.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG. Download each image, or a ZIP of the batch, and open it in the editor you use.

NEF to PNG for retouching and design work

Nikon has written NEF, the Nikon Electronic Format, since the D1 of 1999. It is built on the TIFF structure and stores the sensor readout at 12 or 14 bits per photosite, depending on the setting in the camera menu. Only raw-aware software can develop it into an image: Nikon's free NX Studio, which replaced ViewNX-i and Capture NX-D in 2021, plus Lightroom, Capture One and a handful of others.

Product photographers pass shots to retouchers who use Photoshop layers or GIMP, marketing teams drop images into Canva or Figma, and anyone building a composite needs a file that will be opened and saved many times. A PNG fits that role because its compression is lossless: the pixels after the tenth save are identical to the first.

This page develops the raw sensor data, not the small embedded preview, so the PNG has the full pixel dimensions of your camera.

NEF

Nikon Electronic Format

Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) is the raw image format written by Nikon cameras. Nikon has used it since the D1 in 1999, with uncompressed, lossless and lossy compressed options depending on the camera. A raw file stores the sensor data before the camera applies white balance, sharpening and compression, which leaves far more room to recover highlights, shadows and colour when editing. Files are large and cannot be shared directly on websites, social networks or most phones. Lightroom, Capture One, darktable and the manufacturer's own software open them, but plain image viewers often show only a small embedded preview or nothing at all.

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

NEF to PNG is for Nikon shooters who need an intermediate file for editing, not a final one for sharing: the PNG survives repeated saves in Photoshop, GIMP or a design app without the generation loss a JPG would pick up.

Lossless PNG from Nikon raw: gains and costs

What the PNG gives you

  • No new artifacts however often you re-save
  • Opens in every editor, browser and design app
  • Room for transparency after you cut out a subject
  • Full sensor resolution kept

What to plan for

  • Files often bigger than the NEF itself
  • 8 bits per channel, not the raw's 12 or 14
  • No camera Picture Control look
  • Email and chat apps may refuse the size

Get the look right before the PNG is made

Once a NEF becomes a PNG, the extra bits that let you rescue a blown sky or lift deep shadows are gone. If a picture needs exposure or white balance work, do it in a raw editor and export from there; use this converter for files that already look right straight from the camera.

For pictures that will end up on the web, consider resizing in the same pass. A 2048 px wide PNG is a fraction of the full-resolution file and still plenty for a banner or a slide. If an upload form later caps the size in kilobytes, the guide to reduce image size in KB walks through the options.

NEF to PNG FAQ

Why choose PNG instead of JPG for a Nikon raw file?

Because PNG compression is lossless. You can open the file, retouch it, save it and repeat without the image degrading, while each JPG save adds a little more artifacting. That matters for compositing, product cut-outs and any job that passes through several apps.

How big will a PNG from a 45.7 MP NEF be?

Large. An 8256 × 5504 px image holds about 45 million pixels, and lossless compression of a detailed photo rarely shrinks that to a small file; PNGs well beyond the size of the NEF itself are normal. Resize on the way out if you do not need every pixel.

Does the PNG keep the 14-bit data from my Nikon?

No. The raw file is developed into an image with 8 bits per channel, the standard for screens and most editors. To keep highlight and shadow latitude, finish exposure and white balance in a raw editor first, or export a 16-bit TIFF from NX Studio.

Can I open NEF files in GIMP or Canva directly?

Canva does not accept NEF uploads, and GIMP 2.10 only opens raw files through a separate darktable or RawTherapee plug-in. A PNG made here goes straight into either, along with Affinity, Figma and slide software.

Is the white balance I set on the camera used?

The camera records its white balance setting in the NEF, and raw decoders start from it, so the PNG normally matches the scene's overall color. Picture Control styles and Active D-Lighting are Nikon processing steps that third-party decoders do not reproduce.

Can I make a transparent PNG from my NEF?

Not in one step. A photo has no transparent areas, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. Convert it, remove the background in your editor, and save it as PNG again; that second save loses nothing because PNG is lossless.
