0 keeps the book's own size. E-readers let the reader change size anyway; this mainly matters for PDF, DOCX and TXT output.
Space around the text on each page. 5 mm suits e-ink screens; use 15–20 mm for a PDF you plan to print.
Justified text has straight edges on both sides like a printed book; left-aligned avoids wide gaps between words on small screens.
A5 is close to a paperback and reads well on tablets. Match device sizes the page to the reading device chosen above.
Keep the book's cover, use the first image as the cover (comics and photo books), or leave the book without one.
JPEG quality for pictures and comic pages. 85 looks identical on e-ink; lower it to shrink large comics.
Leave empty to keep the title stored in the file. This is the name shown in the reader's library.
Leave empty to keep the existing author.

Why e-book formats still matter
Most e-books are small websites in a ZIP file: HTML chapters, a style sheet, images and a list of contents. EPUB standardizes that package. It was created by the International Digital Publishing Forum, reached version 3 in 2011, and has been maintained by the W3C since the two organizations combined in 2017; EPUB 3.3 became a W3C Recommendation in 2023. Kobo, Nook, Apple Books, Google Play Books and almost every reading app open it natively.
Amazon took a different path. Kindles began with MOBI, a format Amazon acquired with Mobipocket in 2005, then moved to KF8, saved as AZW3, which added modern layout and fonts. That split is why so many people search for EPUB to MOBI or MOBI to EPUB. It matters less now than it did, because Send to Kindle has accepted EPUB since 2022, but older Kindles and USB transfers still depend on the right file.
Comics follow their own rules. CBZ and CBR are simply ZIP and RAR archives of page images, read in file name order by comic apps; turning them into a PDF with CBR to PDF makes them readable anywhere. FB2, or FictionBook, is an XML format common in Russia and Eastern Europe and converts cleanly to EPUB.

- Base font size 0 keeps the book's own size; it mainly matters for PDF, DOCX and TXT output.
- Page margins default to 5 mm for e-ink; use 15–20 mm for a PDF you will print.
- Text alignment keeps the original, or forces left-aligned or justified text.
- Cover keeps the cover, uses the first image, or leaves the book without one.
- Table of contents builds clickable chapter links from headings; on by default.
- Embed fonts keeps publisher fonts; turning it off lets the reader's fonts take over.
- Image quality 85 and Grayscale images shrink comics without visible loss on e-ink.
When a converted e-book will not open or looks wrong
Send to Kindle rejects the file
MOBI is no longer accepted there. Convert to EPUB and send that; send EPUB to Kindle explains the route step by step.
The book has no chapter menu on the reader
The source has no real headings, only bold text. Keep Table of contents on and, for DOCX sources, apply Heading 1 to chapter titles before converting.
The conversion fails with a protection error
The book carries DRM. Only DRM-free books can be converted; download the DRM-free edition if the store offers one.
A comic is huge and slow to page through
Lower Image quality to 70 and turn on Grayscale images for e-ink readers. Black-and-white pages lose nothing visible.
E-book converter questions
Which format should I use for a Kindle today?
For a Kindle bought in the last decade, EPUB through Send to Kindle or AZW3 copied over USB both work. Since 2022 Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB and converts it for you, and no longer accepts MOBI. Choose MOBI only for Kindles made before 2013 that are loaded by cable. EPUB to AZW3 is preset for the USB route.
Can I convert Kindle books I bought from Amazon?
No. Books bought from the Kindle Store, like those from most stores, are protected with DRM and tied to your account, and this converter only works with DRM-free files. Books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Humble Bundle, many indie authors and your own manuscripts are DRM-free.
Is EPUB to PDF done here or on the PDF tools?
Both work. Choose PDF under Convert to here when you want e-book controls such as PDF page size set to A5 or the reading device. For a PDF laid out like an ordinary document, the EPUB to PDF page, part of the convert to PDF tool, is the better fit.
How do I make a comic book file from images?
Upload the page images, choose CBZ under Convert to and keep Combine images into one book on. Pages are joined in file name order, so name them 001.jpg, 002.jpg and so on. Cover set to First image uses page one as the cover; PNG to EPUB does the same for EPUB readers.
How do I turn my Word manuscript into an e-book?
Upload the DOCX and choose EPUB, or AZW3 for a Kindle. Chapters are detected from Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles, so apply those in Word first; plain bold lines are not recognized as chapters. DOCX to EPUB walks through the settings self-publishers usually use.
Why does my converted PDF book look different from the EPUB?
EPUB is reflowable: text rewraps to the screen and the reader picks the font size. A PDF fixes everything to a page, so the converter has to choose a page size, margins and font size for you. Set PDF page size, Page margins and Base font size to get the look you want.
Can I change the title and author shown in my library?
Yes. Type them into Title and Author under Advanced settings; leave them empty to keep what is stored in the file. Remove extra metadata additionally drops publisher, ISBN, tags and the description.
