Who asks for 3000 × 3000 pixel artwork

Album and single artwork is the most common reason. Apple Music's artwork guidelines require square covers of at least 3000 × 3000 px, and because distributors deliver one file to every store, most of them ask for 3000 px as well. Apple Podcasts sets a range for show art, 1400 to 3000 px square, so a 3000 px file is safe there too.

Spotify takes artwork from your distributor rather than direct uploads, then serves cover images at up to 640 × 640 px in its apps and API. That smaller display size is why a soft cover may look acceptable on a phone and still be rejected by a store that checks the full file.

Requirements change, so treat the table below as orientation and check your distributor's help center before release day.

Cover art checklist before you resize

  • Start from the original design file or the largest export, at least 3000 px on the short side if possible.
  • Keep the title and artist name readable at thumbnail size, around 60 px wide.
  • Leave out web addresses, social handles, prices and store logos; stores commonly reject covers that show them.
  • Save in RGB; CMYK files meant for a print shop can be refused or shift color online.
  • Use the same artwork across stores so the release looks consistent.

3000 × 3000 image questions

Can I upscale a 1000 px cover to 3000 × 3000?

The resizer will enlarge it, but tripling each side cannot add detail, so edges and text turn soft at full size. Stores mostly show covers small, yet some reviewers check artwork at 100%. Re-export from the original design file whenever you can.

Does 3000 × 3000 cover art need to be 300 DPI?

No. Music and podcast platforms check pixels, not the DPI number stored in the file. DPI only matters when you print: 3000 px at 300 DPI is a 10 × 10 inch square, and the cm resizer handles prints sized in centimeters.

Should album artwork be JPG or PNG?

Both are usually accepted. A JPG at quality 95 keeps a photo-based cover visually lossless at a few megabytes, while PNG is better for flat graphics and sharp type but can be several times larger. See JPG vs PNG for the details.

How large is a 3000 × 3000 JPG?

It depends on the picture. A typical photographic cover at quality 95 lands somewhere around 2–6 MB, a flat design much less. If an upload form sets a cap, tick Limit file size under Advanced settings and enter the limit in MB.

My artwork is a rectangle. How do I make it square without cutting off the title?

Choose Fit Pad with color. The whole image is scaled to fit inside 3000 × 3000 and the empty strips are filled with Pad color, for example the background color of the design, so nothing is cropped.

Is 3000 × 3000 good for an Instagram post?

It works, but Instagram stores feed images at 1080 px wide, so most of the pixels are thrown away. Use the Instagram post size page to get a 1080 px file that keeps its sharpness after upload.
