Resize Image to 600 × 600 Pixels
600 × 600 px shows up in more rules than any other square: it is the smallest photo the US visa form accepts, exactly 2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI, and a common product image width. This page crops your picture to that square around the subject and saves a clean JPG.

What is 600 × 600 px used for?
US visa and passport photos (the minimum digital size), 2 × 2 in prints at 300 DPI, profile pictures and single product images in many shop themes.
600 × 600 pixels: why this square keeps coming up
The number is not a coincidence. A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches, and photo printers work at 300 dots per inch, so a print-ready file is 600 × 600 px. The State Department's digital photo rules for the DS-160 visa form use that same 600 px square as the minimum and twice that, 1200 px, as the maximum. Because the size works both on paper and on screen, a 600 px square has become a common default even for photo fields that never print anything.
Shops use it for a different reason. WooCommerce, the WordPress store plugin, has defaulted its single product image to 600 px wide, and many themes display that image as a square. A 600 px square also suits profile pictures on most social networks, which store avatars at smaller sizes and benefit from a clean source. For thumbnails, half the size is enough: resize image to 300×300 makes the small version from the same originals.

600 × 600 pixel questions
Is 600 × 600 px the right size for a US visa photo?
It is the minimum. The State Department accepts digital photos from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px, square, in JPEG and no larger than 240 KB. Head size and background rules apply as well; our US visa photo 600 × 600 requirements guide lists them.
How big is 600 × 600 pixels in inches?
At 300 DPI, the usual print resolution, 600 px is exactly 2 inches, so the square prints at 2 × 2 in (5.08 × 5.08 cm), the US passport photo size. At 72 DPI the same file would be described as 8.3 inches, but that number only matters for printing.
How many KB is a 600 × 600 JPG?
Typically somewhere between 60 and 200 KB at quality 90, depending on how much detail the photo holds. A plain background and a single face land at the low end. If you need to stay under 240 KB, tick Limit file size to be certain.
Can I make 600 × 600 from a small photo without blur?
No tool can add detail that the photo never had. If the source is 400 px wide, enlarging it to 600 px softens it; tick Never enlarge to keep the original pixels, or start from a larger original. For a print-sized photo with head guides, try the passport photo maker.
Should I choose 600 × 600 or 1200 × 1200 for an upload?
Go with the size the form names. Where both are allowed, as on the DS-160, 600 × 600 gives a smaller file that clears a KB limit easily, while 1200 × 1200 holds more detail if the photo is also printed. Both are perfectly square, which is what the validators check first.
