Instagram Profile Picture Size

Your Instagram profile picture is the smallest image you post and the one people see most: next to every comment, story ring and follow request. The app keeps it at 320 × 320 px and draws it as a circle, so this page makes a square of exactly that size with your face in the middle.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Pick a photo with a clear face or logo

Upload a JPG, PNG, HEIC from an iPhone or WebP. A head-and-shoulders shot or a simple logo works best; group photos turn into a crowd of dots at avatar size.

  2. 2

    Keep the 320 × 320 square

Width and Height are set to 320 px with Fit on Crop to fill and Crop position on Smart, which centers the face. Use Top instead if the crop cuts off the top of a head.

  3. 3

Resize and set it in the app

Press Resize, save the JPG to your phone and choose it under Edit profile → Edit picture. Instagram shows a round preview; the square corners are hidden.

Instagram treats the profile picture differently from posts. Feed photos are kept at up to 1080 px wide, while the avatar is reduced to a 320 px square no matter how large the upload was. On screen it is smaller still: roughly 110 px across on the profile page in the app, and a tiny ring next to comments and in the stories tray. The numbers have stayed stable for years, though Instagram does not publish a formal spec sheet, so treat them as the current behavior rather than a promise.

Two things follow from that. First, detail you cannot see at 110 px is wasted, so a tight crop on a face beats a wide scenic shot every time. Second, the circle mask removes about a fifth of the square, all of it from the corners, which means text or a logo that reaches the edges loses its ends. The Smart crop position on this page looks for the busiest area, usually a face, and centers it before the square is cut.

If you are also preparing posts, Instagram post size has the 1080 × 1350 px feed frame ready, and our guide to Instagram post and story sizes collects the remaining formats.

Instagram profile photo questions

What size is the Instagram profile picture in pixels?

Instagram stores profile pictures at 320 × 320 px and displays them as a circle about 110 px across in the app, and somewhat larger on the desktop site. Any square of 320 px or more uploads cleanly; anything smaller is enlarged by Instagram and looks soft.

Should I upload a bigger profile picture than 320 px?

It does no harm, but it does not help either, since Instagram scales every upload down to 320 × 320 px. The one advantage of a larger square is that you can reuse it elsewhere, for example as a 512 px Discord PFP.

Why is my Instagram profile picture blurry?

Usually the source was a small crop, such as a face cut out of a group photo, that Instagram had to enlarge to 320 px. Screenshots of an existing avatar also look worse with every round of compression. Start from the original photo and let this page crop and size it in one step.

Can I use a rectangular photo as my profile picture?

Instagram asks you to choose a square area when you upload a rectangle, and the result is masked to a circle. Doing the square crop here first lets you decide the framing with Smart positioning instead of pinching and dragging on a phone screen.

How do I keep a logo from being cut by the circle?

Leave space around it. A circle inside a square hides the four corners, so a wide wordmark that touches the edges will be clipped. Set Fit to Pad with color and choose your brand's background color so the logo sits in the center with room to spare.

Does the profile picture size differ on Facebook and Threads?

Threads uses your Instagram profile picture, so one 320 px square covers both. A Facebook profile picture is a separate upload that appears larger on a desktop page; use resize image to 600×600 if you want one file that looks sharp on both.
