What does YouTube need from a thumbnail image?
A 16:9 image at 1280 × 720 px, at least 640 px wide, saved as JPG, PNG or GIF and smaller than 2 MB. This page crops and saves to exactly that in one pass.
YouTube thumbnail size and file rules
| Organisation | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube video thumbnail | 1280 × 720 px recommended, minimum width 640 px, 16:9 aspect ratio | YouTube Help |
| YouTube video thumbnail | JPG, GIF or PNG file, under 2 MB | — |
| YouTube channel | Custom thumbnails need a verified channel | — |
| YouTube channel banner | 2560 × 1440 px recommended; text and logos inside the central 1546 × 423 px area | — |
The 1280 × 720 figure matters less for sharpness than for shape. YouTube shows the same file as a home-feed card, a tile next to the player, a large image on a TV and a lock-screen preview, all 16:9. Upload a 4:3 screenshot or a square photo and YouTube adds bars or crops it for you, usually in the wrong place.
The banner row is here because people often mix the two up. A channel banner is a different image with its own safe area; resize it with YouTube banner resize rather than stretching a thumbnail. If your thumbnail already has the right size and only the file is too heavy, the YouTube thumbnail compressor reduces the KB without touching the pixels.
Turn a 4:3, square or vertical image into 16:9
The default. The picture is scaled until it covers 1280 × 720, then the overflow is trimmed. With Smart (subject) the trim follows the face or main object instead of the exact center.
- Best for photos and video stills
- Loses some top and bottom on vertical shots
The whole picture is kept and scaled to fit inside 1280 × 720, and the empty sides are filled with the Pad color you pick. Use it for a book cover, a product box or a chart that must not lose an edge.
- Nothing is cut off
- Pick a color from your channel branding
Keeps proportions without padding, so a square image becomes 720 × 720 and YouTube adds its own bars. Only useful when you plan to place the result on a 16:9 canvas in another app.
- Output is not 16:9 unless the input was
Thumbnail safe area: where text and faces survive
YouTube draws on top of your thumbnail. The duration badge covers roughly the bottom-right corner on almost every surface, a red progress bar runs along the bottom edge after someone has started watching, and on phones the feed tile is only a few hundred pixels wide. Keep titles and faces in the upper two thirds and away from the right-hand corner, and use type large enough to read at about a quarter of the full size.
Because the crop happens before you see YouTube's preview, check the result at small size before uploading: zoom your browser out until the JPG is about 320 px wide. If the headline is still readable there, it will be readable in the feed. For more on picking a crop that keeps the subject, see how to crop an image to a ratio.
YouTube thumbnail resizing questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail in pixels?
1280 × 720 pixels. YouTube's help center asks for that resolution, a minimum width of 640 px and a 16:9 shape. Larger 16:9 files are accepted but gain nothing on screen.
Why does YouTube say my thumbnail file is too big?
Video thumbnails must stay under 2 MB. A PNG export from a design app at 1920 × 1080 often lands well above that. This page saves a JPG at quality 90 with Limit file size set to 2 MB, so the file fits without visible loss.
Why is the custom thumbnail option missing in YouTube Studio?
Uploading your own thumbnail is a feature YouTube unlocks only after the channel is verified, usually with a phone number. Until then Studio only offers the auto-generated frames, whatever size your image is.
Can I use a vertical photo as a thumbnail?
Yes, but a 9:16 picture loses most of its height when cropped to 16:9. Use Crop position to keep the face, or switch Fit to Pad with color so the whole photo sits on a colored band at the sides.
Does a GIF thumbnail move on YouTube?
No. YouTube accepts GIF as a file type but shows a still image, so the JPG output here is the better choice.
Should text on a thumbnail go in the bottom corner?
Avoid the bottom-right corner. YouTube places the video length badge there on almost every surface, and on the watch page and in search a progress bar can run along the bottom edge once someone has started watching.
