Discord PFP Resizer
Discord shows every avatar as a small circle, so a profile picture that looks fine in your camera roll can lose its corners, its edges and half its detail. Resize it here to a square 512 × 512 px PNG with the subject centered, and Discord's cropper has nothing left to guess.

Applies when both sides are set or the shape changes. Fit inside keeps everything and may come out smaller on one side; crop fills the frame exactly; pad adds borders; stretch distorts.
Which part of the image is kept when cropping. Smart keeps the busiest area, usually a face or the main subject.
Color of the borders added around the image, e.g. #FFFFFF for white.

Same as input keeps the original format. Pick GIF or WebP to keep an animation, PNG for transparency.
Applies to JPG, WebP and AVIF. 85 looks identical to the original for photos.
Quality is lowered until the resized file is at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the picture
Pick a photo, drawing or screenshot. Any common image format works, including HEIC from an iPhone and WebP saved from a browser.
- 2
Keep 512 × 512 and Smart crop
The page is set to 512 × 512 px with Fit on Crop to fill and Crop position on Smart, which keeps the face or main shape in the middle. Choose Top instead if the head sits high in a portrait.

Resize and upload to Discord
Press Resize, download the PNG, then in Discord open User Settings → Profiles → Change Avatar and select the file.
Discord PFP size and the other image slots
| Organisation | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| User avatar (profile picture) | Square, minimum 128 × 128 px, 512 × 512 px recommended, up to 10 MB. JPG, PNG or GIF; animated only with Nitro. | support.discord.com |
| Server icon | Square, 512 × 512 px recommended, shown round in the server list. | support.discord.com |
| Profile banner (Nitro) | Wide 5:2 rectangle, at least 600 × 240 px, shown above the avatar in the profile popout. | support.discord.com |
The odd thing about Discord avatars is how small they are on screen compared with how large you should make them. Next to a chat message the circle is roughly 40 pixels across on a desktop monitor; in the profile popout it is about twice that. The extra pixels pay off on phones and laptops with high-density displays, where that small circle is drawn with two or three times as many physical pixels, and in the full-size view when someone clicks your profile.
Discord publishes these numbers in its help center and adjusts them from time to time, for example when profile banners and server banners were added, so treat the table as the current spec rather than a permanent rule. The constant is the shape: everything Discord calls an icon or avatar is a square that the app masks into a circle.
That mask is where most bad avatars go wrong. A circle covers π/4 of its square, about 78.5%, so roughly a fifth of the image, all corners, never appears. Wide group photos, names written along the bottom edge and logos that touch the frame lose the parts people actually recognize. If you prefer a picture to keep its shape, set Fit to Pad with color so the whole image sits inside the square on a solid background.
Four habits of avatars that read well at 40 px
One subject, filling the middle
A face or a single shape that takes up 60–70% of the square. Busy scenes turn into noise once they are shrunk into a small circle.
Strong contrast with the theme
Discord's dark theme is the default. A dark subject on a dark background disappears; add a lighter background color with Pad color if needed.
No small text
Lettering under about a tenth of the image height is unreadable next to chat messages. Put a name in your display name instead.
PNG for art, JPG for photos
Flat colors and line art stay crisp in PNG. A photographic portrait can be JPG at quality 90 if you need a smaller file. Need a different square? Resize image to 512x512 covers any use.
Discord profile picture questions
What is the Discord PFP size?
Discord asks for at least 128 × 128 px and accepts much larger files, but 512 × 512 px is the practical sweet spot: sharp on high-density phone screens and in the large profile popout, small enough to upload instantly. Any square image works, because Discord only needs a 1:1 shape to draw the circle.
Why does my Discord avatar look blurry?
Usually the source was too small, such as a 100 px crop from a group photo, and Discord had to enlarge it. A heavily compressed JPG also smears at small sizes. Start from the largest original you have and export PNG, which this page does by default.
Why is part of my picture cut off on Discord?
The avatar is masked to a circle, which hides about 21% of a square image, all of it in the four corners. The online status dot also sits over the lower right edge. Keep text, eyes and logos inside the middle of the square.
Can I use a GIF as my Discord profile picture?
Animated avatars are a Discord Nitro feature; without Nitro only the first frame is shown. To resize an animated GIF and keep every frame, use Discord PFP GIF, which leaves Keep animation on.
Is a server icon the same size as a profile picture?
It uses the same idea, a square that Discord draws round, and Discord recommends at least 512 × 512 px for it. You can run the same file through this page for both. Server banners and profile banners are wider rectangles and need their own dimensions.
Does Discord limit the avatar file size?
Yes, uploads are capped at 10 MB. A 512 × 512 PNG is normally well under 1 MB, so the limit only bites if you upload an uncropped camera photo or a long animated GIF.
