Resize an Image to the Twitter Header Size

The header on an X profile, still called the Twitter header by most people, is a 1500 × 500 px strip with a 3:1 shape that almost no camera produces. This page crops your photo to that strip and sizes it exactly, so X has no reason to recompress or reframe it.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Upload a wide photo or design

Add a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. A landscape photo with space above and below the subject leaves the most room for the 3:1 crop.

  2. 2

    Check width, height and crop

Width 1500 and Height 500 px are filled in, with Fit on Crop to fill and Crop position on Center. Switch to Top or Bottom if the crop slices through the part you want.

  3. 3

    Resize and upload to X

Press Resize and download the JPG. In X go to Edit profile, tap the header area, choose the file and confirm the framing.

The 3:1 shape is the hard part. A phone photo is 4:3, a widescreen frame is 16:9, and both are far taller than the header, so most of the picture has to go. That is why a header made from a random photo so often shows a forehead and a ceiling. Crop deliberately: a skyline, a desk from above, a texture or a wide landscape survives 3:1 well, while a portrait almost never does.

The profile picture is the second constraint. On the profile page your round avatar overlaps the lower left of the header, on desktop and in the mobile app alike, so anything placed there is hidden. Narrow phone screens also show the strip a little shorter. Plan for a safe band through the middle and the right two thirds; our guide to cropping an image to a ratio walks through choosing that band.

X has adjusted these numbers less often than other networks, but it does change layouts. If a freshly uploaded header looks off, check the help center before redesigning everything.

X header safe zone: what to place where

Safe

  • Center of the strip
  • Right half for text or a logo
  • Horizon lines across the middle

Risky

  • Top and bottom 60 px
  • Thin text under 40 px tall
  • Faces close to an edge

Hidden

  • Lower left behind the avatar
  • Anything outside the 3:1 frame
  • Detail X's compression smooths away

One mistake to avoid with a Twitter banner

Do not upload a square and let X crop it

A 1:1 image loses two thirds of its height when X fits it into 3:1, and the in-app cropper is hard to aim on a phone. Crop here first, check the result, then upload. For a hand-placed frame, the crop image tool lets you drag the strip yourself.

Twitter header questions

What is the X header size in 2025?

Still 1500 × 500 px, a 3:1 ratio, the same as before the rename from Twitter to X in July 2023. X's help center lists that size as the recommendation. Uploads of other shapes are cropped to 3:1 in the app.

Why does my Twitter banner look cut off on my phone?

The header is drawn at different widths on phones, tablets and desktop, and narrow screens trim a little from the top and bottom of the strip. On top of that, your round profile picture sits over the lower left. Keep text and faces in the middle band and toward the right.

Can I use a 1920 × 1080 photo as my header?

Only after cropping, since 16:9 is much taller than 3:1. Upload it here and the tool trims a band across the middle down to 1500 × 500 px. Pick Top or Bottom under Crop position if the best part of the scene is not in the center.

What resolution should text on an X header be?

Design at 1500 × 500 px and keep letters at least 40 px tall, because the strip is shown at roughly half that width on many phones. Thin script fonts and small taglines blur after X's own JPEG compression.

Is the header image the same size as a LinkedIn banner?

No. LinkedIn's personal banner is 1584 × 396 px, a flatter 4:1 strip, so one file does not fit both. LinkedIn banner size has those numbers ready.

Does X keep my header's original quality?

X re-encodes uploads, so some detail is always lost. Uploading at exactly 1500 × 500 px with a quality of 90 means X does not also have to scale the image, which keeps edges and gradients cleaner.
